Have you ever had to search for a runaway dog? I have a few times and last night was one of the most stressful.
Moira came home last night in a police car! Long story short, she took off after a deer when we were walking off leash outside the local dog park around 5 pm yesterday. Before yesterday, this had been a very safe area for off-leash excursions around the disc golf course. Friends and other dog park people joined the search on the ground, various Facebook groups were alerted and I searched the area, both on foot and by car, until about 11 pm, with a couple of breaks. My wife is in Cuba so I had to let her know, so she could worry from a distance.
What I didn't know was that a nice person visiting the area saw her sitting in the middle of the road at about 10.30, watching the cars go by, not far from the dog park. She put her on a leash that she had, knocked on a few doors, and eventually dropped her off at the nearby local OPP detachment (Ontario Provincial Police, our version of the state troopers). We connected through the dog park FB group, I contacted the OPP and a nice officer brought her home around midnight. As a parent, you would probably dread having the police bring your child home but as a pet owner it is not so bad. She was unhurt though smelled a bit swampy. Apparently Moira had a nice time at the OPP station. She had her own cell, got lots of attention, helped with paperwork and barfed on the floor. What a way to spend an evening! Here she is at the police station, picture by the woman that found her.

I've been there, MM, and I can empathize with your situation. When I was back in Morgantown, I has gone to a friend's party near the stadium before a night game. Someone didn't close a gate, and I discovered he was missing after the game let out and the hundreds of football fans were driving home. I searched for several hours in the dark with no luck, then got up at the crack of dawn to hang up signs and resume looking. Someone saw my sign and called to let me know he had been sleeping in their yard a few blocks away from the party. I'd never been so relieved.

Oof having owned a husky for 15 years I've had my fair share of dog runaways. Worst were always in town worrying he'd get hit by a car.
It's cat bed season in our house. There's no less than 3 full size dog beds but the cat bed lives in front of the woodstove so it's always the most coveted.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e04e20e02e.jpg

^^^ Yes, the Huskies are the runners and the chasers. The prey drive switch clicks on and there is no stopping them. Once home they are the biggest cuddler ever. Glad your dogs got back.
Our yard is totally fenced in and on the rare occasion the gate is left open our adopted dogs never leave, because they know how good they have it.
^^^ Huh.
When Kedar used to chase coyotes outside our property, full speed, going at it. I’m sure he was thinking, man. I’ve got it good.
The runaway resting, gathering strength for the next adventure:

Rosie and Poppy out for our walk yesterday evening. Poppy has found her appetite finally! She needs to put on a few pounds. Of course she went in to heat the week before her spay appt so now that’s in another 2 weeks. She’s such a good girl! Just needed someone to give her love and patience.
