After a few colder nights the ski portion of my brain has apparently been activated. I was quite surprised to end up with the bigger ski as the winner on the Renegade vs. Raven touring ratio (40 Ren to 37 Raven days) on what felt like a very dry winter. Here's a few turns on them. I mostly took them out on days if it had snowed even a bit. So far they're in very good condition with just one p-tex job on the base.

For some stupid reason I ended up choosing Dynafit Radicals, which weren't a good match for the ski, so didn't ski the big skis in any consequental terrain. Going to change those for some sturdier bindings.

I really like Tectons on my green and white 196 Renegades. I’m fine skiing soft snow lift served. No hucking. Great for short side country laps.

Most of the treeline stuff is from Finnish Lapland as there's not really that much else to ski in here. That night skiing is actually early afternoon skiing during polar night. Alpine stuff is from Lyngen in Northern Norway.

Headed to Hokkaido in a couple of weeks for about a month.

I was originally planning on bringing a QST Blank for resort and some 110 underfoot touring skis for Yotei / Asahidake etc.

With the snow totals we’ve been seeing, I decided to pick up some renegades and bring them instead. I’m leaning towards leaving my other skis behind and using these for everything.

Would I be committing sacrilege to mount these with a Shift2? I’m usually a firm believer in having separate setups, but realistically I’m still going to want to ski these at the home resort (Whistler) when conditions allow. I most likely will use these for side country laps when conditions are prime, and maybe take them on some bigger (~2000m elevation) tours when the snow and terrain dictate.

I like that I can adjust the shifts to fit my alpine boots and touring boots as needed, and I like that the shifts should (in theory) release a bit more predictably as I’m coming off of a recent fibula fracture and a less recent torn meniscus.

I know the shift gets a lot of crap. And I don’t think it’s great to ski it a ton in bounds as it just won’t hold up over time to that. But every single line in the following clip was skied on a shift[emoji638]. I also know that they were riding them set to [emoji637][emoji637].

How much do you weigh? If you’re 180ish or less I don’t think it’s a bad binding. If you’re 200+, expect a lot of heel prereleases. This is regarding the shift 1.

I’d take a good look at the Duke PT

I’m 5’9” and about 165 lbs stark naked. Skiing the 184 renegade.

The Duke’s an interesting option but I’m pretty leery of having to carry the toe piece around with me. I can see myself dropping it at some inopportune time. That said I’m sure it skis incredibly well.

Duke PT 16's on my 184cm Wolf Rens ski incredibly well inbounds. Only done a few short tours and I haven’t lost a toe. The Duke PT toe is solid (and all one piece), so it's hard to lose. I switched to Duke PT's from Shift 1.0's and haven't looked back (~170 lbs), IMO they just seem more robust.

The IOS issues suck. But all the lines the blank collective skied in there Alaska segment were skied on shift 2. I talked to them in Haines and saw that they had them all set to din11. Cody’s last segment for msp was shot entirely on shift 1. They are finicky to set up and must be looked at constantly to assure they’re still set up correctly.

Did they mention any thoughts on 1 vs 2? Din11 seems reasonable i.e. it’s not super high to the point of suggesting they’re worried about the prerelease issues that the 1 suffered from.

But Bamski, at 165 I wouldn’t be too worried about going with the shift. And anyways, hopefully they fixed a lot of the issues that the had 1. I haven’t kept up with it tho. Ymmv

You’ll be fine on the shifts as long as they are setup right and you know how to adjust them if needed. All the salomon athletes in whis ski them hard inbounds and seem to be fine.

I do however think you might find the total weight package of that setup a bit portly. Atleast make sure you go for a couple laps with it before japan so you dont get too sore day 1 in the japow!

Haha, I jest as I’m also in training mode for Hakuba the end of January. Tohoku where I live is mild in comparison. I always have to “get ready” for the change in pitch and speed.

Almost Ren (forest) season here. Well, some eager rookies have already been exploring what I call Mario Land. Early forest season is really rolly-polly as that undergrowth is barely covered. Maybe one more big system until everything is full-on firing. Feels early but this year’s snow is coming in wet and heavy, flattening the forest floor. A great start for Japan this year.

I see a few shifts around and they seem happy. I wouldn’t fret the noisy complaints of the past.

Bamski is a fit dude, just know from personal experience that when you ski tour for a few years on stuff with a sensible weight you can get hit hard when you get back on the hybrid binding + heavy ski

They said they were aware of all the complaints on 1.0 but also said they skied them hard with no problems, and that biggest issue was people not setting them up right (imo this includes most shops) and not checking them occasionally to see if afd had migrated down. Biggest difference is 2.0 has bigger toe wings, and the afd adjustment is way better. They were even going heli skiing with them and left the same skis with strive16s sitting on the rack.

Have both, ski both. PT16's on my 191 Rens, v1 Shift on my Vision 108's (and two previous pairs).

No hesitation to ski hard on either. No probs with Shifts once I bumped my DIN 1 point on the heel and learned to adjust the AFD.

I put the PT's on my Rens because I regularly ski them inbound. They're solid and HEAVY.

I think most of the Shift problems were on early v1's. My caveats are that I wouldn't daily them inbounds and I probably wouldn't put them on a touring ski that I wanted to keep for decades.

That’s good to hear. My biggest issue was the brakes deploying constantly when climbing, then followed by pre release issues. I did spend very close attention to setting up the afd with the tgr recommendation. I’m still convinced being 200lbs+ has something to do with it. Sounds like they’ve fixed the issues tho, good on ‘em. Okay, I’ll stop cunting up the renegade thread now

I have been thinking about a fatter hoji and since they now make the renegade in a 177 I think it’s a need.

Yup. Skied my twenty-thirteen one eighty sixes last week and my partners didn’t even recognize them. Then they were like- “ That’s a really interesting ski.” after we skied the forest a few hours and they saw them in action.

An absolutely phenomenal untracked JP tree ski.

Pretzel, I'd be stoked to ski with you, but in all honesty this zone with tgapp, et al. was also new to me so I wasn't much of a guide. But I was very stoked to learn a new zone with like-minded people. Very good times were had by all.

And it's not that I skied the Ren well, it's that it does all the work for me and I can just go along for the ride.

I kept repeating to the crew: "Remember when this (type of skiing) used to be hard?"

That trip just reaffirmed that I'll own this ski as my designated fresh snow tree ski until it breaks. Maybe I should prepare for that ahead of time and order an HL UT One Twenty Two. ;-)

I hear you. But isnt the HL UT CXX a different beast? 1750 gr at 183 cm and 1850 gr at 190 cm. Never skied an HL carbon construction ski (although I have the FL105 and FR132 in my quiver), but somehow I envision getting a 183 (184 material length) with freeraider 15s, not CASTs.</p>

I was interested in the HL Carbon BC skis but they don’t make any smaller than a 180.
My current fat skis are 181’s so I am trying to downsize a bit.

The reason I listed my Rens is I’ve bought some HL UT One Twenty-Two’s.

Specs/dimensions are eerily similar to the Renegades, ya the weight is less on the UT One Twenty Two but I’m planning on ATK’ing them. I have other “heavy” pow skis that are getting more use in cut-up pow inbounds than my Rens (HB One Twenty-Two, Revolt One Twenty-One, HL R One Twenty).

In hindsight I should have put pin bindings on the Rens as they are so good in untracked.

Also fine keeping the Rens as company wall art cause my CPA firm is called Forefront Consulting Ltd.
