Cricket and Katydid chorus is out strong tonight. Love it!
Turtles are awesome. On one of my mtb riding routes sometimes I'll take a couple mile detour to pond that has lots to see if any are out.

Thought this was interesting to hear on the drive home from the field - Grizzly killed by mtn goat:

Small griz at only 70kg. Maybe just left momma. Stay away from ol' billy goat gruff!
Also got to play peak-a-boo with a large muley doe for about 1/2hr. Pics didn't turn out unfortunately. Not sure why she was hanging so close, couldn't find any other does or young in the area. No bucks in early rut either. With general hunting season on for the last few weeks I'd of thought she would be more skittish.
Norse,
We caught a couple of mantis this summer over on Vashon. I don’t recall ever seeing one growing up here. They aren’t native right?

Not native to WA. They’re all over this side of the crest.
Probably 10+ years ago my daughters found two and put them in a jar. They showed me and as we watched the female? ate the head off the other one.

I feel bad about the mouse I killed last night. I liked watching the little guy scurry around the living room but hanta is endemic here so he had to go.
Spotted while walking on my driveway this evening. So cat-like

^It's crazy how much noise can come from such a dainty critter.^

If someone could photoshop a dead tree in place of the pipe that would be great. /s

Whooo can identify this owl? It was ~7" tall, a fledgling maybe?

Full grown Saw-whet owl. Super cool little birds.
Dang! You're good, that's fast id.
We thought it could've been that or some type of pygmy owl. At 4pm that thing flew into that tree ~30' in front of my group of 5 and just sat there while we took photos and talked about it. We were surprised that it didn't seem to be afraid of us and fly away... so like so many grouse or ducks you see in that area. We walked past that same spot ~10 minutes later and it moved to another tree just a few feet away but watched us all walk past again.
Great few days of weather, with bonus critter views
We see a Saw-whet about once a year outside our chicken coop hunting mice. They really have no concern for humans and are viscous killers of rodents.
From my front window. The does came through a few hours later.
