Ohh the rain is so beautiful! It started around noon here in town. Updated forecast from chamonix.com has actually gotten better - they now claim 60-100cm through tomorrow night, with more coming on the weekend.
The gale force winds are still in the forecast, but hey snow is snow!

Chamonix, France - Thurs Feb 16, 1:54 AM --- It's snowing like a motherfucker and I'm drunk with joy (and beer).
Well, that makes 2 hangovers then.
Pissed like a motherfucker last night at 1264m.
Snowline seems to have risen up to about 1800m.
Let me know if there is any snow in Cham, and where it is.
Ditto for anything in the Vallais or Berneuse Oberland.
Edit=what a sat image! A direct hit. At least we are in stream of weather.

Chamonix, France - Thurs Feb 16, 8:29 AM --- Still snowing down here at 1000m although it is of the "almost rain" variety. Slight hangover but meeting the boys at 9:15 to see what we can shred. Reports of 70km/h winds at the summit and website says most of the joint is shut but reckon we can find something. Pow!
snowed a whole tonne here, but it is of the elephant snot variety. tough, wet skiing. odd part is the snow is lighter in the valley than it is on the mountain

Great info people. Thanks.
Keep me posted, especially y'all in the Cham valley.
I might have to make a ride over if the line was at 1000m.
Anyone from La Grave got info, or should we assume
that the silence is the result of being skiing? :the_finge
Seconding powsluts assesment of st anton conditions. I think the snow was still very skiable, though heavy. The biggest problem was visibility; at times I couldn't see 5 meters in front of me, never mind the terrain. Made it difficult. A good opportunity to play the "hide and find the beacon" game.
Right now it is clear here. But the temperature is like + 5 c, so it might be difficult tomorrow - which is my last day skiing in st anton by the way.
So here's the Cham-o-update -- there's around 50-60cm fresh on the ground at Les Grands, very thick, at least down at Longon / Plan Joran, but quite skiable. Low vis but who cares in the forest -- we got fresh lines all day with a 10min hike out. Nice to be able to let'ter rip and not have to worry about hurting yourself. It was really, really like "the perfect day" in cham' -- start off with a cafe creme and a quiche lorraine at my favorite little cafe, an awesome, awesome day of skiing with my little group of friends, beers in the Grands Montets parking lot, climbing at the ENSA gym, and late night beers at Chambre Neuf. ROCK ON.
Now a hard rain is falling and snow continues to appear prominently in the local forecast. High winds forecasted as well and reports of 70 kph winds at the Midi this morning so we're just hoping it keeps snowing and the wind magically dies down.

If you are in the French Alps you may have noticed that the westerly wind has been gaining strength since 8pm today. This message is to warn you that the avalanche danger has been raised to Extreme for the Beaufortin and Haute-Tarentaise areas of the Savoie and is High elsewhere in the Northern Alps. The Haute-Tarentaise includes ski resorts such as la Plagne, les Arcs, Tignes and Val d'Isère. Extreme danger means that widespread natural or human triggered avalanches are certain. There are very unstable slabs on most aspects and slope angles and large destructive avalanches are possible. Some avalanches may reach communication links and buildings.
be careful out there!
and there will be more.
much more.
btw. it looks quite good or a wintery and cold end of feb.
Cham-o-update 2/17 --- it's been dumping like a motherfucker all day in town, where I am unfortunately stuck at home working. My friends on the hill have called reporting incredible powpow. My boss can fuck off tomorrow.
High winds and a large amount of new snowfall in a short period have made everything very dangerous... we set off many fairly sizable slabs in the forest yesterday with shocking ease. Ripzalot is right - be careful out there.
It's amazing how a bit of snow can set the entire town OFF the scale... everybody is amped to the max here, lots of big smilies just walking down the street, snowball fights... the kinds of times that remind you why you're here.
Your boss should be fucking off today mate. Go get it!
Things are looking good in Euroland! Now that i'm back on this side of things i'll be roadtrippin' come march. No set plans yet as we will be trying to go where the snow is. Austria and France are definitely on the map (powslut, my fellow canuk, i might be in your neck of the woods in a bit). But for now the small hills around Bosnia will have to suffice.
I'll be checking back here as much as possible, great snow reports. Now if work would just stop getting in the way...
Snowed nicely today.
Wet heavy layer underneath very nice snow.
Over the calf high. Let 'em rip.
My dream :
the present snowfall snows every day between here and the 3rd of March and puts a safe rock / crevasse covering layer down in La grave. I arrive on the 4th to a bluebird full powder mission day that results in nothing but face shots and ear to ear grins.
It snows every night and bluebirds every day for the rest of the week.
that is all
