French pyrenees. And a group of 7 skinned up the couloir and
Destroyed it. And of course they ended up not skiing it because? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a13175a9dd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...36dba484b4.jpg

Good eye! #1 is Boy Scout, #2 is Sickle.
We didn't do any homework on Boy Scout and went straight up it, the chokestone stopped us. Would probably have gone with some dry tooling shenanigans but were were a group of 5 with no gear (1 whippet total, no rope) so it seemed prudent to enjoy what we could instead of sketching our way through and probably falling over the thing on the way back down.
Nice job on getting the Sickle, I was glassing it from Stanley on that day you and Brittney skied it. Couldn't have asked for better conditions on that day.
Surprised you didn't know about the chockstone in the Boyscout. Do you know the story of how that couloir got it's name?
We really lucked out with the Sickle, conditions were incredible and we didn't expect to find it untouched given that there were people at Fishhook at the time.
I felt bad for Brit and her partner, they must have been a bit disappointed when they spotted a couple yahoos 100' ahead of them after breaking trail for hours without a track in sight. We also had Verts which made our life easier while they got to wallow in the unsupportable booter. They were both super psyched though, can't imagine a better pair to run into and team up with on the fly! No competition to top out first, just good vibes all around from people pumped to be in the mountains. We spent the whole time in the couloir shooting the shit and making a list of Small Lake City people we all knew.
Re: Boyscout, I think I read that it's named after all the boy scouts who camp at the head of the lake and gape at the most unreal-looking line anywhere but that isn't a very good story. Hope you have a better one!
I didn't know anything about the line, including the fact that it requires a rope and has to approached from the back. The rest of the crew was equally uninformed. I usually spend hours on Caltopo planning but for this trip made a conscious effort to go with the flow as conditions weren't supposed to be that great and we didn't expect everything to be good to go. We didn't have any plans to ski Boyscout until the morning of when I saw the name Grand Mogul on the map, looked out the window at the peak, and demanded we go stand on top.
There was definitely a moment of frustration when I snuck under the chokestone only to realize we weren't going to make it over the next crux. That didn't last though, we were in a rad spot with a good crew and had somehow managed to get up to that spot via one of the most egregious skinners I've ever done.
Right on. Was the other crew going up the Sickle from Stanley or was it the crew at Fishhook? Either way, glad it worked out, funny how the Sawtooths are like that sometimes, parties sometimes take different approaches to lines from different drainages.
The Boyscout Couloir was named by a couple of the guides back in the '80's after they had to go up the Boyscout and rescue some boyscouts that had gotten in WAY over their ability levels and were safely guided down.
I feel like a whole lot of places should be named Boyscout ____. where have these yahoos not been rescued from by now?
Back on track, the disappearing skinner is a neat trick, thanks wind!

A few weeks ago I got a DM on instagram from a fellow Teton skier. He shared a picture of our skin track in Garnett Canyon from early January. He had asked around when it happened if anyone knew who it was, but no luck. He was able to piece it together through my insta-spray post. We were quite stoked to see a picture. We never had a chance to snap one and it was blown in the next day. My friend Charlie gets all
the credit for being a trail breaking machine that day. Not pictured is just as many switchbacks coming out of the Meadows.

this
Name that line and three parties who have skied it in a non-bailing-from-main-objective fashion and I’ll apologize to the bootpacking gods.
The wind board and heinous sastrugi that I found in this approach couloir on previous attempts thanks to the winds of the south fork of Garnett Canyon.Quote:

If somebody wanted to score it in clean conditions, they should’ve woken up earlier, but I would suggest just picking a better ski line. I think you’d be surprised by the number of rocks just under the surface of that skin track.

This one from a few years back is going to make you weep then:

Skins >>> Verts unless it's steep and narrow. I'd also rather cross a skinner when hauling ass down a couloir than blow through a booter.
You don't like it, get up earlier.

Switch back # too many. Purcells traverse 1987.
I think that chute is this one? Burnt into my brain from his story last year
Edit:maybe not, opposite bend, same zone
