Soft Snow Gymkhana - The Heritage Lab FR110

Looking for some feedback from Corvus owners. I have the 183, find it shockingly good on hard snow, and its my DD, but sometimes wish it was little bit more drifty in soft snow. I'm constantly waffling back and forth between the following two thoughts.

1. Keep the Corvus as a DD, low snow hard pack option and pick up an FR110 as another quiver powder ski
2. Retire it and get an R110 as a new DD. Loose a bit of raw ice hardpack capability but gain some fun drifty benefits in return. Also doubles as a sick travel ski.

Also length since I'm fine with the Corvus in a 183, I was thinking I could go either way, but my intuition was R 181, and FR 186. (5,10 160#)

Used to own one-eighty-three Corvus and own one-eighty-six FR one-ten. I’d go option one. They’re so different. Fun to have pow ski and chargey ski quiver.

The R110 is your huckleberry. One eighty six. I’m a reverse Corvus fan love the one ninety three. The one ninety four R110 is way more drifty and might have better edge hold than the Corvus.

Thanks Guys. These last two posts capture my inner dialogue completely :). If the R10 has the same level of grip as the Corvus with more drift and play, I'm feeling like I'd get more use of out of it.

Nice man! You seem to be thinking about length right, IMO. The 181 R110 would be a nice Corvus 183 replacement and the 186 FR110 would be nice compliment.

As N1ck has these exact two skis/lengths and coming from similar-ish skis prior, hoping he can offer a little insight if he sees this too!

R110 181. Best ski I’ve ever skied. I’m going there. Two footed carves. Chalk slarves. Surf turns.

I thought I’d add a bit of nostalgic flair with a ~20 year old, near mint FKS155 swapped with a new 115 brake.

Drill, tap, as per recommended at 85.75 from the tail. Tried screwing one without a tap for science. Almost stripped my screw with a posi-driver. Got scared. Will now tap all HL skis.

My JP shop bro— “I need this ski. How do I buy this thing?” He was mind-blown.

Readers— you touch these things and you know what they are. Just buy them.

At this point I’m convinced every binding color is the right color for this particular ski. Not sure I’ve seen a combo I don’t like. Puke green might not but then again…

Correct. I have the 186FR and the 181R, only 2 days on the latter but one was an early season legit pow day here in CO. 5'10.5 and 178-180ish.

The FR is an excellent pow/soft ski and reminds me of the Volkl One but stiffer (slightly?) and slightly less/lower splay and definitely better construction. the FR shape allows for easy float and is super quick to brake/stop, and to pivot if you have just enough speed. I only got 4-5 days on mine last season and none yet this year.

The R is fucking rad. I went for the 181 (just shy of 180 straight pull) hoping for a super maneuverable, tree skiing 2 days after a storm ski. It has that to spare, and it's stiff flex just kills. Kind of reminds me of the Devastator just shorter and again, better construction. Actually it also reminds me of my Kusala Pow but obviously downsized and more nimble, but similar feeling flex and stability. The R is SO great it's hard to not sound like hyperbole. I'd love to try the 187 for kicks, but I'm very happy with the shorter option.

This could be a 2-ski quiver for resort skiing.

I picked up the FR110 Beta's last Thursday, got 'em mounted up, and skied them Saturday and Sunday at Alta. Mediocre conditions, but one run down Mambo, and the lightbulb went off. Skied them all day, and Sunday brought my Deathwish 104's to make sure I was on the right track.
Currently, the DW 104's are for sale, and these should be my new soft snow/pow Alta ski. Very excited to see what they do in soft snow, but the firm snow groomer/huge bump report is that they are nimble, pivoty, and have juuuust enough suspension (Beta's have a kiss of camber) to make them really enjoyable. The DW104 just feels too stiff for firm bumps, and that plus the triple camber leads to challenges in both hard bumps and slick made groomers.

I managed to get a couple of runs on the BC110 yesterday, Shift binders and beefed up Cosmos 3 boots. I have yet skied them too little for a review, but enough for first impressions.

To be honest, I was a bit concerned to take them out, because of limited snow conditions and mostly frontside skiing prior to yesterday. Three days on Solly Stance 102 which were great for said conditions in St. Anton. But during the night it filled up with about ten inches of fresh so I couldn't resist any longer.

Now I haven't been on any fully rockered skis before, save for og cochise and og bodes, let alone fully rockered touring skis, and had concerns they'd be unruly on hardpack with the full rocker and pretty lightweight. Turned out i was dead wrong. They tracked beautifully even when skied flat, on piste, cat tracks, and traverses. Got just a few turns in untouched snow, but many more in cut up and tracked out. First runs of the season in touring boots, but the skis behaved very well. No quirks or surprises whatsoever . Very neutral. Could ski them as I wanted from the first turns. A pleasant experience, they will serve me well I'm sure.

The edge engagement is super dialled with that shape, No excessive pull from the tips. They track really well both in the snow and on hardpack. However, I seemed not to be able to vary carved turn shapes much. No rebound to speak of when I tried to push them a bit. It might boil down to lacking technique and in touring boots early season, but maybe that also contributes to their neutral behavior in other situations.

Well done Marshal, I'm happy I jumped on these.

But yeah, got very, very curious about the heavier R's and FR's now...
