Hoping next weekend's predictions aren't a fluke...
Fingers very crossed. Does look pretty solid that we should be getting something. I'll be at Alpine Thursday through Monday or Tuesday. Anyone else be around hopefully enjoying some fresh? I would imagine next weekend will be very very busy.
I'll be there next weekend and hopefully most days this season when there's fresh. K2 fujas or Obsetheds, black jacket, grey pants, smith helmet and gogs. Holler.
Amusing moment of the day was when the Summit liftie gave Oldtimer the pro call-out.
Skiing was surprisingly good this weekend. Enjoyed both D8 and North Peril today. Almost hiked into D7, but caution prevailed. Hopefully, this week's systems will fall as spackle and not rain.
I am crossing fingers for snow and will take it in any form it comes. What I'm NOT wishing for is:
-that the snow comes in with a decent amount of rain at the beginning to wet down the facets sitting everywhere
-that the storm could hold off until Monday so I can watch the Broncos finally back in the Super Bowl again without FOMO
-that I didn't have to work out of town Friday and Saturday when the bulk of the storm is proj'd to hit. Oh well, my pass is blacked out Saturdays and it will be stupid crowded so I would have been bc solo and the 'pack is going to be super sketchy during that period.
One request I will make is that there will please be enough snow to lake level to allow backcountry skiing that doesn't involve long dirt hikes to the snow and unsupportive facets barely concealing snowsharks like the one that tried to throw Huck down that chute headfirst. Please.
^^^Rain on those facets would actually be a good thing, provided it's enough to percolate through the pack. Also, aside from due north aspects, it's pretty much bare ground, so a good wet storm is just what we need. Can't wait to see the carnage that is sure to ensue with powder fever and a shallow snowpack. Avalanches should be the least of peoples worries.

Has anyone heard of an accident this weekend involving a female snowboarder? Just saw a FB post that suggests a friend of ours is seriously injured. As we are trying to get more info, my wife asked if I saw anything on TGR. So I ask. She is a pretty competent rider, so as a reminder stay safe out there.
Snowpack seemed to shrink back a bit and consolidate compared to a week ago at Kirkwood. Looked to me as even the North facing rocks were melting nearby snow. Maybe the mountain is saying snow is on its way?
Heard about a female snowboarder running into a ski instructor teaching a class of kids near the base of tamarack lift at heavenly. from what i heard she was knocked out for a bit and the instructor broke some ribs had a collapsed lung and may have broken a leg as well. I didn't get the impression her injuries were serious though.Quote:

The rumor mill is not fueled by ACTUAL information.
Another rumor (from unofficial alpine) is of an AM patroller doing speed control hit and injured.
Squaw Valley Fire was responding to something at Alpine as I was leaving around 1:30 on Saturday. Figured that wasn't good, but that's all I know.
As an aside, I can't recall ever feeling more unsafe than I did at Alpine last weekend. Way too much speed and lack of space out there suddenly. Got my tails run over once, another severely close call, and enough general lack of courtesy to get me really edgy.
a careflight helicopter landed in the alpine parking lot around 4:15 saturday afternoon.
it landed next to a fire engine and/or ambulance.
i don't know any details.
i agree that alpine felt too congested this weekend...
but it was still pretty fun all things considered.
Flying into Reno on the 5th of Feb with a bunch of friends from the ice coast. Looks like we chose the wrong year to visit Tahoe, hopefully that changes a bit with the storms rolling in this week and the later part of next week. I have an epic pass, but most of my buddies don't (I only have a few ski with friends passes left). Any idea of places to get discounted lift tickets to Heavenly? Costco in reno? I'm sure my buddies don't wanna pay $95 a day to ski 15 runs. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If Alpine felt congested last weekend I can only imagine what this weekend will be like. I can't figure that the incoming storm will be enough to get Scott and/or Sherwood open.
Hopefully the storm should be enough to Siberia, Granite, and Shirley open at Squaw - that should hopefully alleviate the crowds at Alpine. Even with 8000ft snow levels initially all that stuff should be getting nicely spackled.
The good news is this looks like spackle. Bad news is we need twice as much as expected. But it could be enough to fill the gaps in current terrain and make things fun. KW does have a starter pack and could be worth the trip.
