We have a Clearwater entry point permit for the second week of August. Bunkhouse reserved for night zero at the lodge then, 6 nights 7 days in the park. Been busy dehydrating food and touching up the gear. Just finished the shrimp marinara and have some fine boxed wine. Some mushrooms in there but not magical sadly. Going to do the Clearwater Loop, which follows the border route on Mountain and Moose for a bit before we sweep south on Fowl and back west to meander our way to the EP eventually.
Can't wait. Haven't been up the gunflint trail since I was a kid. The Vento unit is full Duluth Complex, so big bluffs. Crisscrossed by hiking trails. Johnson falls.

I’m a pussy compared to you. I got a motel room and just did day paddles. No portages, just paddled around for several hours each day. Had a good time. I’ll go back when I get my shit dialed. Impressed with the performance of my new We-No-Nah. Got a Bending Branches paddle so I look like I know what I’m doing. I’m getting old and my knees cannot handle the stress of kneeling all day like they used to. Had to sit most of the day, which took some getting used to.Quote:

I have no first hand recent info on Starks. Probably continuing on a bit as a shadow of its former glory. The owner who knew my grandpa died in 2018 and the place soldiers on with the kids running it I think.

My Elan/Roxa connection got hit on his motorcycle by a 19-y-o chick early this summer, and luckily escaped with his life, but he's been in the hospital for nearly 3 months. I'll be helping out a lot at the local pre-season swaps and such on his behalf. Hoping for a good recovery for him, but it has been and will continue to be a long road for him.
We're making a trip across the pond (depending on the M-I-L situation) in early October. Flying into Amsterdam, then catching a flight to Hamburg. From there, we'll go to Kiel Germany, hop on a BIG f'in boat, and cruise to Copenhagen, and then up the Norwegian coast, hitting a bunch of fjords. It's Mrs Axe's 50th and our 22nd wedded bliss (?) celebration. My first time out of North America. I hope things line up - I'd hate for this trip to get postponed, but that's a pretty selfish thought...
Dropped off a bunch of skis, poles, and other assorted ski shit at Trollhaugen for their swap this weekend. Picked up my season pass while I was there. Hubba hubba.

None of my skis sold ! I guess asking $125 was too much ?
Anyway, skis are now free to anyone who has skied with me. Also free to anyone who skis with me the day they pick them up.
I know Djongo lurks in this thread, he will be pleased to know that I sold every pair of poles I had for $10 a pair, 7 pairs of poles total. He was making fun of me last year in Jackson because of my long ass poles. I did keep one pair that I will cut down.
