Maggot motorcycle stoke thread

To be honest I had a 97 x-1 and I loved it for the riding around here, however my idea of having fun could very well be different from anyone else's. I like my pegs folding on on my ankles at 100mph, I also like getting blasted in the chest when cruising on a recliner. However I think the most important thing is I love my bike, same as anyone else should love the bike they have, no matter how big a piece of shit it is, simply because it is theirs. Ideally I would have that X-1, my Vrod, an Aprilla, a Duc, and why not a jap bike just to have. I don't though and I'll take the VRod(with the clunky transmission) over anything else on the market because it fits me, that and Buell needs a bit more work before I add one to my growing arsenal

Back to the subject of the MSF beginner class...I just took it, and I'm totally stoked. In Vermont, the early classes fill up super fast, and I missed the signup (I was too busy skiing), so I showed up early on Friday night as a standby student. One registered student didn't show up, so I got in. Had a blast all weekend--went from never having driven a motorcycle (not even a dirtbike) or even knowing where the clutch, brakes, and throttle were to blasting around cone lanes in the parking lot at 15-20 MPH by Sunday afternoon.

Now I just need to buy a helmet, some gloves, and a bike...oh, and I've got to wait for the DMV to process the paperwork from the class, which is the hard part right now. (In Vermont, successful completion of the class is good for a motorcycle endorsement.)

Here's a few photos from the two trackdays I've done at Miller Motorsports Park here in Utah on my GSXR 750. I'm still a track noob as I've only done 2 trackdays so far, and it's incredibly fun to ride your bike as fast as you want in a safe, controlled environment. You learn tons about lean angle, throttle control, braking etc etc as you can focus on just riding your brains out.

The American Les Mans series is coming to Miller next weekend. Here's one of the VERY trick Porsches that'll be competing. This thing has carbon fiber everything and titanium lug nuts.

I'm signed up for the June 2nd trackday at Miller(it will be my 3rd there), which is the day after the World Superbike races.

Anyone with a bike that can pass the safety inspection and the required safety gear can do these trackdays and as Boarderline says you become a much better rider through them. I've seen big BMW touring bikes and even a Harley out there.

Congrats on the MSF class AVTSkibum! I took it 4 years ago with a buddy of mine just to learn, no intent on buy a bike. I have been riding for 4 years now! It was so much fun I had to buy one. It’s looking like a good decision since I saw gas at $3.96 today and I get 50+MPG. 4 gallons last all week.

I want to go to a track school sometime this yr.

Does anybody know of a dirt MSF type course one can take in Utah? I have a wr450f that just punishes me - & I need to get more gooder at not crashing on it.

First off, very cool P! You look like a different rider. Looks like a ton of fun.

So you have seen a cruiser out there? I would love to get up to some speed, learn how to handle the bike better in turns and so on.

Would it be worth it to take a day and head out there to spin some laps? What all is required for safety gear?

Obviously a sport bike would be more fun, but that is not what I own.
Always looking to be a better and safer rider.................

Look into taking an ART (Advanced Rider Training) course with the Utah SBA. You'll learn a ton and have lots of fun too. When they had the Sport Touring ART, they had all kinds of bikes on the track from full dress Goldwings to BMW touring bikes.

i really wish we had a paved track closer to MT. i havent done a track day in forever and never on my Buell.

and i finally had to break down, against doctors orders, and got my bike out of the garage. just tooled around town some, but still nice to get out.

now if i could find my other damn glove!!

Cool, thanks for the heads up. I already did the ERC as well, so this would be a good step up.

In what might be the exact opposite extreme to the cool fast bikes y'all are having so much fun on, I might have a line on a late 70's BMW R80 with under 8000 original miles, cheap. Know I'm first in line, question is if/when he wants to sell. It would be a great commute/short tour bike i'm a thinkin...:D

Stoked...bought a bike Wednesday, took care of some needed maintenance before I could start it yesterday (got delayed by getting a few turns in on Superstar), and she started up and ran quite nicely this morning.

1999 Ninja 250 in black, and I gotta watch my right hand. It's awfully easy (and fun) to go from low-RPM cruising in third to 70 MPH...

Update: okay, now I'm even more stoked; got a used jacket from a friend over the weekend, then today I rode up 100, across 125, up 7, back across 17 (which was a bit more sporty than I remembered it being when I drove it in the VW), then back down 100. 160 miles, about 4.5 hours with a couple of brief stops, and I am totally, totally stoked on the bike. Now if the rest of my gear would just show up... :FIREdevil

I have been following this thread on and off for a while. Lot of cool bikes owned by the collective here. I have been wanting a motorcycle for as long as I can remember, literally. This has been a huge issue for my wife and I, but finally she has caved in. So I signed up for my Basic Rider Course which I am attending in mid-june. I doubt I'll have the funds to get a bike this summer, but maybe by fall.

Few of the bikes that I love. SV650 is probably my first choice. I just saw the KTM690 supermoto, oh god thats hawt. KLR if i actually thought i'd make it into the foothills. I don't think there is enough access to trails on the front range to warrant this bike, but its cheap and reliable. I like the idea of a "sport tourer" not the big ones, but a v-twin is a great sound.

SV650 is a solid bike. you can do anything on it and parts are cheap.

good job signing up for the rider course. I'm well aware there are a lot of people who will disagree, but I think it should be mandatory for anyone trying to get a bike license.

she will probably never ride on it. That was her issue, when she was young, some dummy with little riding experience dumped a bike with her on it and she got burned. So i have been fighting someone else's mistakes as well as her thinking that i want her to ride on it with me, which i don't. If she changes her mind along the way, I'll worry about it then.

oh, and I also like the suzuki Gs500 as a starter

Think about a Bonneville too - inexpensive with a ton of style. If you have a Triumph dealer near you (If not you'd better get good at working on the bike yourself...)

edit: not saying triumphs need a ton of work, just that every town has a dozen jap and harley mechanics who can help you if you run into a problem. The same cannot be said for Triumph, KTM, and Duc

my neighbor just sold his triumph, for those reasons. a dealer isn't too far from here, but not that big of a fan.

I just flew back from Euro and half the plain from JFK to SLC was the Italian team. Rowdy bunch they were.

Get the SV650. You live in a place where any pleasure riding will include large changes in altitude. The SV650 is injected so needs no adjusting, the 500, even jetted for "Altitude" will be a bear to get over the passes.

If you lived a t sea level it wouldn't matter as much... other than the whole part that one bike is cool and kicks ass, and the other is a POS GS500.

Trust me - I owned an altitude-tuned GS650G when I lived in Vail. It would slow down to about 40mph on Vail pass -- not too great with big SUVs barreling along at 70something
