"All weather" tires in place of winter tires

If most of your winter driving is in cool wet conditions you probably do not want a winter tire (what is called Nordic in Europe), but a High Performance Winter tire (just Winter tire in Europe).

Going with separate summer/winter lets you optimize for both - maybe you have a higher performance car, so having a winter set of wheels lets you put proper summer tires on as well.

Another consideration with the single all-weather option is that you may end up replacing them before they are fully worn out so that you can maintain enough snow traction.

Winter tires are often less expensive that good all-weathers as well. For example, Cross Climates in our vans OE size are $264, but VikingContact 8s in a downsized width/wheel diameter are only $153.

If you have the space to store them, I would personally go with two sets of tires, but thats just, like, my opinion man.

I have been on the 2 sets of wheels plan for a long time but I’m not sure a performance winter offers a big enough change from an all weather to be worth the hassle and buying an extra set of wheels. Almost all my driving is freeway so the only metrics I care about in the summer are noise and efficiency, I can get a little better on those with 2 sets but not a ton.

The CC2's worked well this winter.


I drive 10k/year max. 2 sets just isn't worth the hassle.

I was trying to find a test that used the CC as an all-weather control against winter tires. Best I could come up with was a test that had both the CC and a Hankook all-weather, and a separate test with the Hankook as a control against winter tires, if you want to put in the effort to cross reference:
