Hummingbird moths are fun to watch, and they are important pollinators. I'm not a fan of their larva though.

Convergent evolution for the win.
Ever seen a luna moth? Those things freaked me out the first time I encountered one on a tree.
Never seen one.

It looks like the ghost of a blue morpho butterfly, which I have seen.

But they're good eating--or at least Pandora Moth larvae are:

Ha. Yea, first time I saw one was this year in our yard and I thought I was tripping. Weird.
Have had a few of these on our peppers and tomatoes this year. They hammered a few plants, eat up the veggies and take huge dumps.

Came across this fellow at 2:30am in the Tetons. Seemed chill af, he didn't even move. Just glad it wasn't a bear.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f3c8ced613.jpg

This little guy was nosing around the little cabin we rent to a friend. Pic taken from our deck.

Goldfinch season

I've had a few Luna moths resting on the house outside the front door in the past years. Beasts for sure, crazy to see in person!
It's sunflower season and the birds are hitting them hard. It's interesting to see the Goldfinches do the upside down their way and the Chickadees do the upside down the other way.

Cool. (S. Eastern OR)
Husband's video from guiding yesterday (it's actually the guest's video who is standing up through the sunroof of the vehicle to get this video)
this is bear 399 and her 4 cubs. They are going to need a McMansion to house them all through hibernation this winter lol

he said this was one of the closest encounters he had with bears since the pics that started this thread
My first post in this thread are of bear 610 and her cubs and bear 610 is also 399's daughter
So cool
Very cool babybear(s). It's pretty impressive how big they are. I'd assume they are last year's cubs?
A friend of mine ran into 399 and cubs at one of the Jackson Lake Damn pullouts recently. Same thing, they hung out next to cars in the lot for a while. Seems like they are getting a little too used to hoomans? That never ends well.
That's really cool bbear. Hopefully people will be smart and 399 and her cubs can stay out of trouble this fall. Is that lady still "feeding the moose" in her backyard near the airport?
Today a woman posted in our local mtb club facebook page that she was hiking with her 3 dogs near Kelly Canyon and was surrounded by a pack of wolves. She claims if she didn’t have, and deploy her bear spray, she wouldn’t have her dogs anymore.
What’s crazy about this to me, she was on the south side of the mountain, and the trail she was on isn’t forested, basically out in the open and close to somewhat developed land.
Apparently there is a documented pack that’s inhabited the Big Holes (White Owl pack) dating back to 2016, when 6 hunting hounds were killed over a span of a few weeks around May. Pretty interesting. Had no idea there were wolves that close nearby, we ride up there all the time, would be neat to see them sometime.

yes born last year and there’s usually not 4 of them so it should be a tight fit in the den this winter and then she will kick them off on their own next summer
it’s hypothesized that 399 stays close to the roads/people because male grizzlies tend to avoid those places and they are constantly trying to target the cubs to kill. She’s been doing this for years. but yeah- agree generally it’s a bad thing and there have been several instances of bears being fed this year. they closed signal mtn road for awhile because of bear feeding incidents up there
I think so- apparently she plays dumb/works around it. grrr
