Someone spends $30k on one of them magic flying carpet things we drive around in these days, and plans to spend another $10k on gas and maintenance over its lifetime. Gas prices rise $2 over a couple years (maybe you can claim unexpectedly?). So TCO goes from $40k to $42k. Cry me a river. Lay off the avocado toast for a few weeks.
Not sure on your math there. Just taking 30 mpg avg ( pretty good) and 150,000 miles life (not so good) you burn 5,000 gallons so $2 increase is $10,000 increase. No idea where you came up with the total for gas and maintenance
my fav is the guy that quotes price for a barrel of crude vs price at the pump now and 20 yrs ago
like his comparison means anything
I used math similar to yours. You own it for ten years, the gas price is higher for two years. Adjusting your number for 2 years /10*$10k = $2k. If one drives a lot, or drives a beater that never breaks, maybe TCO rises 10% instead of 5%.
The exact numbers don't matter. I made them up to illustrate how small this great tragedy is. Everyone will be different, but my numbers should be ballpark for many. Will prices fall in 2 years? Maybe sooner. They've fallen quickly in the past. Future uncertain
There's also the large capital outlay to open new wells and with futures still pretty low it might not be worth it. 2024 futures are about $85 and 2025 about $77.
Soooo simple minded....thinking gas prices only effect you and everyone else at the pump. Did you see today's inflation reports? Highest since December 1981. If it was as simple as people paying more at the pump to fuel change to more efficient vehicles....fine, stand on that hill. But that is simply not the case.
I guess we should focus on electric trains, semi's and farm tractors...lol Who cares if we can't rape the earth for enough lithium for the toxic batteries. Just dump them in the ocean or rocky mountain headwaters when done.
I'm saying nothing about change. You could take my math as an argument against change. I assumed a vehicle purchase in the last ten years. That purchaser would reasonably assume some future turbulence in the oil market. (Iran, OPEC, China, carbon tax, frack bans, market failure... something was likely to happen) The purchase decision would have accounted for what we are seeing now. The car (vehicle) owner would not be surprised to see high gas prices now.
I'm all in favor of the sudden urge for cleaner electric vehicles. I also see it as an emo overreaction. When you look at all the expenses that go into owning a vehicle, the current gas price surge is rationally only a small argument in a vehicle-buying decision. There's reasons so many people drive trucks and SUVs instead of more efficient cars. They don't care about spending thousands more for gas over the vehicle's life (nor do they really care about abusing the Earth and its people to extract and burn the oil).
I was thinking about it yesterday after paying $6/gal, if I went from my current 17mpg using premium to 40mpg using regular I'd save at least $75 a day when I'm working. I work 12-14 days a month (on the road) so if I put that same $900-1k/mo into a used hybrid of some sort it would pay for itself fairly quickly. Too bad the used car market is such a mess.
Folks like gravitylover who drive all day long can justifiably complain a little about paying more for gas. Not doing the math, but roughly looks like 25 gallons per day. Also, if he paid $4/gallon before the recent surge, he already had a $50 a day incentive to switch to that 40mpg vehicle.
Hedge oil/gas prices by buying XOM/CVX/DVN....its not too late.
This year, and hopefully the next 2 or 3, I'm doing that ~400 miles a day twice as often as the last few (before COVID) and ten times a month more than the last 2 years. I also need the space a SUV or minivan offers but I'm working on how to get around needing to travel with (huge) samples. I made it work with a sports car but when I went to an SUV my sales quadrupled and so did my income.
don't you claim expenses on income and write some of it off ?
Try google or stay ignorant my friend. Autonomous electric containerships on the horizon too.

the coal mine in tumbler ridge used electric powered trains, i think it was 400kms of dedicated electric coal train with the overhead power lins out to where it hit the CN main just like the trains in yurp so its been done here in BC but that mine went under and i havent seen any others
my kid used to refurb those train motors and he said they were small compared to the industrial stuff he worked on, motors he could walk thru with the stator removed
You're kidding right? They are literally the go to train in most civilized nations.
