mini-recon....

foget monte rosa, was there last week for a day and there isn't anything. val d'aosta is also screwed for the most part. verbier and friends are pretty grim. joined tele al for a few days around leysin/diablerets and as he says, it was white: enjoyed some piste-ing, some touring, some hanging off chains in order to meet crazy kiwi dudes and ski weird snow. on the way back to turin i hit the super saint and the gsb pass. seriously wind scoured up there, but i have to admit to finding the best skiing of the entire trip in some chutes off a sketchy traverse in super saint, it was actually really fun. toured up to the hospice which was cool. there's actually some snow up there if you're will to work for it.

good luck, fellow euro-mags, it's time to get on your knees!

edit- forgot one of the coolest parts of the trip....so al and i are on a pretty sketchy, north-facing, a bit wind loaded traverse and i'm getting a little creeped out about the snow situation. all of a sudden, about 12-15 chamoix come roaring down a 35-40 degree slope about 200 meters away from us and nothing budges, guess that snow's actually ok. anyways, after a pretty stressful morning al and i proceed to absolutely chow down on some suisse mountain food.

yeah yesterday morning I landed in MXP (milan malpensa) from san diego and still had a day off so I could not resist and drove up to verb for a couple of slopes. It's totally true western alps are :nonono2: (with italy even worse than switz and france), but something might change within the WE.
in case anyone is interested, so far alagna got a bit more than gressoney and champoluc, so when the next big dump come, alagna might have the bottom that gress and champ certainly do not have so far

the area below refugio margherita had some snow, but otherwise, alagna hadn't even covered up the scree.

2nd hand report here: A couple of friends of mine have been in Alagna from last friday until yesterday (the 7th of feb). They said they found lots of good snow, but they needed to walk. They're now in Andermatt.

Those Chamois were way cool charging down the slope.
Made me feel like a pussy for being scared of snowpack.
But, better scared than food for that big Bearded Vulture at G3.

I should not tell ya and keep the secret ;) , but you might also drive through the trient pass and go ovronnaz (on the left side few km before sion). This coming dumping is most likely to hit it well

For those of you with the best forecasts (and ability to read them): The eastern alps is getting getting quite a bit, I gather.

My choices are; 1) the arlberg this weekend and for a week 2) the arlberg next weekend and for a week 3) any other place in the alps from next weekend and for a week.

If good conditions is the criterion; which of the three should I go for (it seems that number one is good).

Light snow falling in Chamonix right now...

Bernese Oberland might get hit too. Anybody up for doing some of the 4000ers over there? Anybody know if that's a feasible or suicidal idea (no idea the conditions over there)? Idea would be...

D1: Blatten -> Hollandia Hutte
D2: -> Moonch Hutte
D3: Moonch
D4: Fiescherhorn
D5: Jungfrau -> Blatten

Or suggest something. Now thinking I need to chase the snow on this one - it's been weeks since I really skiied hard!

Edit - or if somebody wants to save time and do the Jungfraujoch to skip D1 and D2, I could either cave in and pay the ticket or solo up and meet you at the Moonch Hutte.

Since 15:00 in the afternoon to now (21:00) about 5 cm (in Les Granges) and it's going on ... slightly but continuously :-)

Kitzbuhel Snow end of March

Any of you guys know what kind of typical cnditions I could expect in Kitzbuhel at the end of March?

I'm looking to book a bargain holiday from the UK, I normally go high in France but it seems france is having crap conditions and Austria is having great conditions. Plus the fact there none of the holidays to france seem great value this year, got one to Kitzbuhel that is a real bargain.

You better believe it.... it's finally snowing hard and as I left the mountain today it had already snowed a good 15cm up high. It's now 8.30pm and it's dumping!!
The day started off with pretty strong winds and my group headed over to Stuben, but the cloud level was pretty low so skiing to Langen was out as the vis was poor. We headed to Verwall through the beautiful water fall gully which is always impressive and snow was a mixure of powder patches and crud...interesting!!.
Will update tomorrow on the powder day!!!

Kitzbuhel at the end of march is a big risk. Its a low resort. It would have to have some major snowfall to be good at that time of year.

If you want to have a holiday at that time in the season and you want to do it on a budget, the best thing to do is book your flights to an airport that has easy access to a lot of skiing and then decide on the accomodation with a week to go. This gives you the cheap flights teamed up with the flexibility to go where the skiings good.

Another option which gives total freedom is to book a eurotunnel for your car for that week and decide on the day where you want to go. You'll have the pick of any resort you like that way.

Leave yourself as many options as possible.

I'll be heading to engel berg around that time .....

There's quite a lot of snow further east at the moment. Don't discard cheap flights to Linz or Graz and resorts in Lower Austria / Styria.
