I've been lectured a time or two from them about complete non-violations that were annoying AF to get out of. I'm guessing that it helps depending on the type of vehicle, at least as far as percentage of risk. I asked if non-smoker, they of course said it was never smoked in. Guy who did PPI verified same for me. Was true. Car ended up being really like new on inside. They even had it professionally detailed for me before pickup! Again, outstanding people who I learned upon pickup were straight ballers. HOWEVER, it's still a risk so ask as many questions as it takes to verify best you can. I figured worst case, I'd have to one-way back home. Thankfully haven't had to do that... yet.

I put Audi/Merc/Volvo wagons in the category of lower risk of red flag issues than the cheap Ford, Chevrolets, and what not I had previously shopped for that were often times disgusting on the inside, where people treated their vehicles like ashtrays and garbage bins. LMAO.

I find the biggest problem to be what to do about a license plate. Yeah you can go to the DMV to get a temp plate but that doesn't always work now with most of them still being appointment-only. It's also hard like in NY you can only go to a DMV office in the county you live in. It's also a HUGE fine to drive with a plate from your other car even just to transport the new used car home. All of the cars I've sold in the last 10 years, other than the problem one, were trailered out of here.

Once again, all you need is a bill of sale. Obviously putting a plate on that's registered to another vehicle is going to get you nailed, duh.

I'm with MTF, not hard to get insurance and worth it just in case.

For plates, I've drove home an hour or so a few times with no plates (legal in some states after purchase), and I've also had sellers leave their plates on the vehicle. The one long distance buy I did was a Mag, and he left the plate for me.

Don't swap plates. Guaranteed ticket + tow if you get stopped.

See if the seller is OK with you keeping the existing plates on the vehicle, with your promise to mail them back promptly when you get home.

Due to the current LEO quiet quitting/work slowdown, getting stopped while minding your own business (or even racing - see latest Malibu news) is exceedingly low. However, LPRs make getting popped with swapped plates a very real possibility.

As for the plates, it's really dependent on what states you're transporting from/to. When staying in my state but having to drive my new car the 400 mile trip, the seller actually paid for some sort of a temporary transit permit, and he kept the plates, but the vehicle was legal to drive like that for a few days per state law. I just put the permit on the dash. Had no trouble. And it was insured.

When I bought my Mercedes, Florida had something similar but only counted in the state, but seller left the plates on for me and didn't worry about it since I signed the transfer of title tear off slip he could keep to submit to the state proving it was out of his possession at that point. In many places, the seller can submit the transfer of title notice online super easy, so the plate thing isn't really an issue. Just do a quick search of the rulez for the state you're purchasing in and transferring to. My home state gave me 30 days to register and get new plates. I'm sure most are the same.

Little update on my situation. Went up to Butte and looked at the Tahoe today. It's a 1998 LT and is in pretty speculator condition...

131k miles, zero rust, exterior is mint other than some very minor scratches that appear to be in the clear coat and some small rock dings. Interior looks like it hasn't been used. All of the controls work, plastics not sun damaged, seats/carpet/headliner are perfect.

On the road.. engine is smooth as dime, transmission is butter, shifts into 4x4 hi/low better than my 09 4runner, antilock brakes work.

This thing is the real deal, think I found a unicorn.


The seller and I agreed to not proceed with the transaction today and instead make it official when I head back up with my fiancé on Saturday, would have had to go back up either way to pick one of the vehicles up.

The ONLY thing that is slightly sketching me out is that the title is not in his name, it is signed by the previous owner and notarized. That being said, the seller is legit in my eyes.. Met him at his dental practice, shit you not. Carfax report is clean too. Bet he's trying to title jump considering he only purchased it about 6 months ago and said he's selling because his wife was pissed he bought it, but honestly if it doesn't affect me I don't care. Vehicle is in MT, I'm titling/registering in WY. From what I can tell I don't need the title and bill of sale to match, just need both notarized. I'm going to ask to meet somewhere on Saturday that we can get a bill of sale notarized.

Has anyone gone through something similar with the title? Results?

EoB - go down to the county offices and ask them what Wyoming requires. Call the MT DMV and ask the same questions.

Drive gently with proof of sale and insurance.

Waddawe think about an 07 A3 hatch manual 2.0 T with 131k for $5k? Trouble ahead of worth looking into more?

Haha, true that. I got my CDL at the office in Butte. Loved the staff there. Honestly the friendliest DMV I've ever been to. I think they were just stoked that SOMEBODY came in that day. Unlike the vast majority of DMVs, these ladies were not sticklers about the paperwork at all. In and out. I'm guessing it should be similar in WY. Should be easy enough to transport a new car from MT to WY.

As much as I honestly do like Audis, I've learned that at a certain point their plastics completely turn to brittle glass and/or goo. I don't think I'd want one past 10 years old or so. Weren't the A3s with the manuals FWD only? Maybe I'm wrong, but at least when they were on my short list, every one I found with AWD was AT only. I could be mistaken, though.
