I've been into Gojira lately.
Exodus re-recorded Bonded By Blood, titled Let There Be Blood. Title track:
As you can hear, it's quite solid.
Also, Hell's Breath, off of their original demo. Proof that Kirk Hammett is a fucking thief:
Bolt Thrower
Decrepit Birth
Dissection
Sear
Xasthur
I've been listening to Terror Propaganda by Craft a lot lately. It's an older album (2002, I think) but the vocalist is inhuman. I don't really listen to a whole lot of raw satan corpsepaint style black metal anymore - mostly because the genre is clogged with a million shitty Darkthrone clones - but Craft do it right.
Blood Must Be Shed by Zyklon B (not to be confused with the shitty death metal band Zyklon) was recently reissued - all I had before was a cassette tape. Another great black metal "album".
Been listening to Destroyer 666 lately
Blotted Science
Cynic
Nile
The Faceless
Arsis
Anybody ever hear of The Black Lodge from France? They were so ridiculous they ruled. They were heroin black metal pioneers. Y'know how lots of those black metal bands play live shows in corpsepaint and big spiked armbands? Instead of spikes on their armbands, these guys had syringes. They played live with a drum machine. They're probably dead or male prostitutes in Paris by now..
...and I know I've got a separate thread for this, but the new Drudkh album Microcosmos is very very good. Aside from their all-acoustic album this is the farthest out on a non-metal limb they've gotten thusfar. The first and last songs are traditional Russian folk songs played on acoustic instruments and the third song Ars Poetica is basically a really long Smashing Pumpkins song with Roman Blagih doing the vocals instead of Billy Corgan. Not to rip on metal, but it's nice to see a band like this distance themselves from the pack. Although the first half of Далекий Крик Журавлів has some light-speed blastbeats..
IMO Microsmos was a disappointment. Its still much, much better than the average black metal album, but it falls short of Drudkh's previous recordings.
Metallica, Bullet For My Valentine, Children Of Bodom, Alexisonfire, Parkway Drive, Destroy The Runner, Dimmu Borgir, As I Lay Dying, In Flames, etc.))
Check out this Hungarian "Avante Garde Metal" band, Thy Catafalque:
Parkway drive? You fuckin FETCHINA!! That's shit people listen to when they want to ride a boner.
Download BEHEMOTH's song "sculpting the throne ov seth"... that's fuckin metal as fuck!!!!
My all time favorite band is MESHUGGAH
Check out my sweet hardcore band (ghey tuff guy music ala Hatebreed). The fun starts at 1:35:

Is this seriously you?
Yes it was 4 years ago. Don't make fun of me. It was just for fun. My real passion is jazz guitar.
Wow - look at all the hot women there.
just got turned onto theses guys
Sleep

I know outsiders think deathmetal and blackmetal vocals are silly, but that guy has a very very silly vocal style. At least they're better than Shitknot, Korn or Disturd.
See - this is why so many metal guys just give it up and get into ambient or electronic music.
Agree on the Sleep recommendation.
heard suicide silence on liquid metal on sirius and found it better than most of the stuff they play on there.I like the hardcore throat ripping scream style more than the cookie monster "i have a harmonizer" and am not afraid to use it" style (which was overused by the mid 90's).
and to make up for my horrible suggestion here's some classic late 80's grindcore
That guy doesn't use a "throat ripping scream" style. Turning the levels all the way up on the vocal mic does not equal throat-ripping screaming. And half the time he is in fact using cookie monster vocals. Tune out the Sirius.
...and how many deathmetal bands actually used a harmonizer? General Surgury and maybe Mortician are the only ones I can think of.
...and I heard ENT are afraid of A/C.
how about some macbre to lighten the mood:
jer, lots of metal bands use harmonizers for the vocals, maybe not live but in the studio i can think of at least 3 bands i helped record that used em
more classic metal goodness
I just heard about this today. Pretty funny.
As I Lay Dying's vocalist Tim Lambesis has a side project called Austrian Death Machine. He's playing all instruments and each song is based on Arnold quotes from various movies.
My fave metal (not too into real metal) has got to be Iron Maiden/Ozzy (on the softer side) and Napalm Death (Harmony Corruption/From Enslavement...)/older Slayer on the other end. I certainly am not that heavy into metal for the most part so I don't have the exposure some may have.
So who has listened to NILE's "Those Whom the Gods Detest"? It came out about two months ago but I didn't notice it til three weeks back? I think I've played this thing 50 times already. I've listened to a fuckin ton o' metal in my time and this album is hands down NILE's best and maybe one of the best technical death metal albums of all time. Both guitarists are very skilled at fast tremelo picking but they also love to get super sludgy brutal and bend the fuck out of their strings too. They play a lot of minor scales in a wierd drop A tuning to come up with a fucking incredible epic oriental or "ancient egyptian" NILE sound. The band founder, Karl Sanders, plays this 12 string fretless to amazing effect. It is as impressive as Behemoth's "Demigod" which just lost its place as my favorite death metal album.
Yo Mastodon, if you are digging "Evangelion" this new NILE album is gonna melt your mind. Oh, and Vader has a new one out too. Its like all Vader albums, four really good songs. But I think everyone should watch the video for "Never Say My Name". It is destined to be an Easter classic....
I'm not telling any certain band, just the kinds of music.
1.- Thrash Metal (Beyond the embrace, Anthrax, Megadeth, ...)
2.- Nu-Metal (Machine Head, Mnemic, ...) (Thrash/Progresive Metal)
3.- Death Metal (Kataklysm, ...)
4.- Heavy Metal (Children of Bodom, ...)Listen to some of their songs, and start from there.
I've been listening to Immortal a lot lately. It's been pretty grim and frostbitten around here.
"I fight's to the finnich 'cause I eat's me GRIMFROZEN RAVENDARK FROSTED FLAKES OF FROST IN THE NORTHERNMOST FROSTBITTEN GLACIERS OF BLASHYRKH!!!!"
Funny thing is, when you listen to Immortal long enough you start talking like that.
