NHL 2024-2025. Not a Florida team.

Here, I'll give you another boring rant to bitch about. Why are we fans of particular teams? It's because rooting for those teams reminds us of connections to the people we watched those teams with in the past, or now. I think of watching the Lions and Tigers at Tiger Stadium, the Pistons at Cobo Arena, the Wings at Olympia and the people I was there with, some dead, some I still talk with about those teams to this day. I feel no such connection to US national teams, even in the Olympics. Maybe it's because I have no use for roughly half the people rooting for those teams. I can see how nationalism is so strong in soccer in so many countries where watching the national team with your friends is an important part of life. For the most part we don't have that here. The other thing about the 4 nations tournament in particular is that it has no tradition behind it. Tradition is what makes sports important.

Supporting a team definitely is influenced by those who surround you. Particularly before the days of the inter web so much lore was passed by word of mouth, or (yikes!) reading about feats/games/players via newspapers or weekly magazines. It was something cultivated out of a limited stream of input. Family lines also hugely involved. Michigan v Michigan State was an obvious one growing up.

Today is vastly different and with the evolving financial influence and free agency it does make you wonder how folks are latching on to teams. Given the transient nature of the times, fan bases are getting dispersed as well.

No better example than the NHL in SLC currently. EVERY home game has seemingly a 50/50 split of visitor jerseys in the Delta Center as a result of how many transplants and/or acquired fans a visiting team has in this previous non-market city. I suspect each year the home to visitor ratio improves as more locals convert to the home town team, but will be interesting to observe. These games for now seem more of a neutral venue setting compared to a one-sided advantage for UHC.

Lastly, it is amazing to see how docile native Utah fans are. I got a lot of sideways glances for heckling M-A Fleury the other night after he let in Six! Folks don’t know I’m a lifetime fan, watched many games live between his Pens and my Wings through the years, and even saw him play in G2 of the Finals with VGK. He sucked the other night and I let him know it! The fans around me acted as though I just told the Profit I’m not paying my tithing!!! There is such a divide among the local base as to whether to clap and support a fight, or sit on your hands aghast at such behavior. Sure hoping those new to hockey here embrace the sport for what it is and try not mormonize the experience as some testimony to their righteousness…. That is the reason most are choosing Mammoth over the Outlaws - they don’t want to be associated with the term, nor have to explain to their children how they are supporting “bad guys” , even though their religion/culture/ancestors are intertwined with so many outlaws. Classic irony - so instead let’s all root for the frumpy, cute, disneyesque snuffleufugus as our team mascot…. Go team!

Just wanted to clear that up. Unfortunately the Wings looked like a team afraid to win the last 2 games against Columbus.

I was at that Wild game, and also noted the reverence for Mark Andre Fleury. I think most of the Utah fans either rooted for him with Vegas or have no past reference to him other than hes a great goalie and a very nice guy. It was likely the last chance for most of us to see him play in person, so the reverence of seeing an icon play is understandable. Obviously as a Wings fan you have a completely different history with the 08 and 09 Cup Final battles against MAF and the Pens.

My hot take: One beef about the Delta crowd I have is the number of third party NHL jerseys I see people wearing there. I have no issue with other jerseys as a whole- wear your college team, youth program, or Slap Shot or Shoresy jersey all you want. Coyotes jerseys are certainly acceptable at a UHC game, as are wearing a current player of one of the teams you are watching previous teams jersey (a Pens Fleury jersey at that Wild game, for instance). But what is with the just wearing a random NHL teams jersey? No one at the UHC Wild game cares that you are a Bruins/Blues/Knights/Dallas fan.
Is this just a thing in a new NHL city, or is it everywhere now? Granted I havent been going to NHL games until this year since I moved to Utah, but no one ever did this at Pens games I went to for 20 years.

That’s pretty funny. We were at the UHC v. Devils game on Saturday and I was thinking the same thing seeing a guy wearing a Leaf’s jersey on the train. Then we get there and there are tons of other jerseys floating around.

I was impressed with the overall scene though. People seemed pretty stoked on the O’Brien fight. Also thought it was hilarious that when some fans got on the big screen they immediately pound their beer. Honesty must be kind of weird being a Mormon there, but as long as they don’t try to take away the traditional hockey experience who cares.

MAF is the only goalie I've seen in a fight. Can't remember who with, the other goalie obviously. And it was part of a general melee. I have nothing against him. When you get beat by a better team there's nothing personal about it.

BTW, why such a big deal about Ovi breaking the regular season goal record--which the TVs just call the goal record, obviously to hype it and keep people watching. The total goal record is more important IMO and is probably out of reach. Although maybe not. Last night Caps v Rangers I heard the words Ovechkin and burst of speed in the same sentence so maybe he has at least two more seasons in him.

I had noticed they seem to be spoon feeding Ovi a lot of empty net goals this season so I looked up career EN goals. Ovi had 64 vs Gretzky at 56 which I think was as of 2024. But yeah it would be cool to see him eclipse Gretzky overall, and crazy if he could make it to 1,000 regular season goals. Just put him on the ice every time the net is empty.

The Rat is off to Florida. That will be interesting to watch.

Should be interesting indeed. If you look up Florida Man in the urban dictionary you'll see his picture.

I do think they have the kind of team that can just roll 4 lines now, and those are the teams that win the cup.

In two years the bruins have gone from winning the presidents trophy by a mile to fire sale. Crazy. What an addition for Fla.

The Avs will be fine when they get Landeskog back. Sure.

Boston, minus Marchand, Coyle, McAvoy, and Lindholm took apart the Lightning, who decided it was just a practice. Including a shot from just over the red line that Vasilevskiy decided was too much work to stop.Meanwhile everyone in the hunt for 8th in the East keeps getting points except the Wings. Goddamn OT games where Rangers and Ottawa both get points. Wings make no significant moves, have obviously written off the season already.

Gretsky still has more assists than Ovechkin has total points.

Crazy to think that if Ovi didn’t get injured earlier this season he would have shattered the record.

He could still hit 900 this season. And is under contract one more year, but has said he won't sign another one. So he should get well over 900.


But Gretzky has 122 playoff goals vs 72 for Ovi. So Ovi will need to score another 50 to get most goals overall for a career.

Tom Wilson has been carrying Ovechkin all season and playing better than I've ever seen him. He does the stuff Ovechkin doesn't do any more--back checking, carrying the puck, going hard into the corners, checking--making it possible for Ovechkin to set up in front of the net or in the left circle and wait to shoot. I saw Ovechkin in person in Vegas last year and focused on him when he was on the ice. He's about the most boring hockey player you could watch--but then there's that shot. The game I was at I don't think he had a shot on goal.

Geez and how bitter you were when Gretzky overtook your beloved Red Wing?

Wild game in Dallas tonite. Stars were up 3-2, scored two with about 2:30 left. Nucks scored 3 in the last minute to tie it and then won in OT.


Reminded me of a Flames-Nords game way back where Flames scored 5 goals in the last 7 mins, including 3 in 30sec and then two SH goals 4sec apart in the last 15 sec.

He is playing for the Colorado Eagles (Avs farm team) on Friday. (start of 3 game conditioning)
Tickets mostly sold out, and the ones I saw were going for 1k on resale.

If Vegas can get healthy they are going to be tough to beat. Unfortunately that's a big if.

Vegas got a really easy draw in MN, they could sweep and recuperate. The Kings could easily sweep Edmonton as well. I think the Avs and Stars are the teams to beat in the West though. Go Avs
