It is so sad that these areas got devastated the way they did. So many areas that you would think are far enough out of the 100 year flood plain to never get even a few inches on their property, were completely submerged. It is almost unbelievable until you stop and think about what scientists have been saying for 30 years "could" happen as the atmosphere warms and becomes more energetic. Combine this latest historic runoff with infrastructure in floodplains that was never designed to handle that much water and once overwhelmed exacerbate the flooding (e.g. dam breaks) and you have a complete disaster. It isn't a conspiracy, it is where our planet is heading.
Between what happened as a in Upstate NY/Vermont/NH the last two summers as unusually intense storms flooded large areas and this disaster in the SE, it is going to really start to take a toll on many of these rural and semi-rural areas. It may take years to return to "normal" if they ever actually get there.

I don't know if it's my own perspective and the sources of news that I consume, but I feel like my news and social feeds are just absolutely packed with devastating images, one after another, of the flooding damage in Appalachia and when I flip channels or websites I don't see the same level of attention on the national outlets where it's more election coverage, Israel's wars, Ukraine, etc. and then this.

I realize that news reporting topics are not exclusive of one another, but it's overwhelming to think how forever changed these peoples' lives are and how many have been lost, never mind how much has been lost, and that these people could use a lot more light shed on their situation.

I’ve seen that complaint a lot of SM (Twitter). My algorithm seems to be working better than some, maybe because over the week and weekend, I kept searching for a few well informed sources, like dr montano and dr shepherd. I thought the newshour coverage has been fairer.

I’m not seeing much coverage yet about the extremely important quartz mining industry and the long term global economic changes that might result.

All those other things are happening concurrently, and have to (or should) be covered by national news media. I find CBS/CBSN has done a good job of regularly getting stories on this hurricane's damage on their broadcasts. Maybe check it out if you haven't already.

Our close friends owned a restaurant in Biltmore Village that is apparently completely gone, they lost a rental property as well but the primary residence is ok. The damage is mind blowing.

can confirm the railroad along the north toe is gone in multiple spots and generally fucked where it remains. it'll be months before a train runs on that line again.

Just back from Atlanta.

The Metro Atlanta area is about 10K square miles, the Gallatin Valley is about 2500 square miles. Envision the Gallatin Valley as a wall to wall anthill crawling with all kinds of different ants. Around 1.33 million of them.
The visit coincided with a visit from some bitch named Helene.

I flew in about the same time she was making landfall in FL as a cat 3-4 storm. It had been raining for the previous 36 hrs and the ground was saturated enough that trees were already starting to fall and the forecast winds hadn't begun.

The next day we ran around a small portion of Smyrna looking for D-cells, filing a couple of water jugs, checking a first aid kit. It was a little mad max.

My sister and the people on the West side of the city were mostly lucky except for the low lying areas that always flood. They did.

The East side got a firehouse enema. Try and imagine 9" of rain when things are already flooding. That was Thursday night.

N. Carolina, especially the Western end is fucked, some places recorded 30" of rain total.

Newland is really close to them and thank you for the offer, that is much appreciated. My inlaws are all accounted for though and 'good' right now. Thankfully they have plenty of diabeetus pills and somehow - with no new parts - got their still back working within 48 hours























My wife would slit my throat if she saw this post.

As is always the case with horrible events like this, you hear the awful stories that bring things to a personal level, and also those stories that restore your faith in the human spirit.

This one I came across today had a bit of both. On one hand I love so much that a place like this was built and existed, and on the other hand I’m so saddened for those folks that have lost it forever.

I know everyone/everything needs help in the Asheville area, but regarding the animals I happened to catch this on the radio a couple days ago...

We talk to Leah Craig Chumbley, the director of Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in Asheville, about devastating flooding in the North Carolina mountain city. The shelter's 150 dogs and cats were evacuated ahead of the storm, but the entire campus was destroyed.

Climate change vulnerability….

After the Camp Fire in CA, it was a challenge to find locations for semi-permanent temporary housing for the victims. There were also a bunch of workers imported to for debris removal. So housing shortage with the need to house more people than those that are displaced.

My friend is a pharmacist that manages a large pharmacy that sells to nursing homes. He said major supply issues are in store.

There was a GFS run yesterday that showed another TC out of the western gulf following Milton. It had a path that crossed FL and cruised up the eastern seaboard. Hopefully, it’s just fantasy

Now at 914mb. Hurricane hunter observed surface level winds of 177 knots. That's almost exactly the same as Irma.

FIL moved to Florida last yr, inland from Tampa & no flood risk but I think he’s thinking of moving back West after this one.
