Saw that post, originated from Old Skool Snowboarders page. A couple others as well, but nothing confirmed officially. My hope is a few lower buildings maybe impacted, but lifts, major infrastructure and equip got missed.
Lots of politics already playing out on the social media pages. This is a National Park and is under Fed jurisdiction, not provincial. Resource MOU’s with AB wildfire service in place, but the parks call the shots. Hoping the conversation stays civil. No casualties so far, and buildings can be replaced.
Weibo, Whipski, and any other Jasper mags, I’m just down the hiway, let me know how I can help.
Word.
I'm not afraid to set up a GoFundMe for our Jasper mags (can you GoFund Canadians or is there a Canadian .ca equivalent?).
Hopefully not needed but we all know this gang takes care of its own....

The fire in Jasper is devasating. One of my friends from school days was general manager of the well-known Maligne Lodge for many years, it has been completely vapourized. He retired last year but has to be overwhelmed from that and the potential loss of his home nearby. He was evacuated to Kamloops, not sure where he is now.
Parks just posted an estimated fire perimeter and it seems to be below Marmot. It's not exact but the beat they could estimate through the smoke and clouds today. The rain helped which is good. If anyone does want to donate the Jasper Community Fund would be a good spot (jaspercommunityteamsociety.ca). I will probably be good but a good friend who posts here has not been as lucky.
Just terrible. I started seeing some of the vids. Hit home when i see the old staff accom home on Geikie i lived in ,from a summer spent in 89, looks to be lost.
Really hoping a childhood friends home isnt lost. Him and his fam have evacuated to valemont

Keller, WA - Firefighters and staff at Mount Tolman Center evacuated as the Swawilla Fire threatened the facility. The one thing that they could not take with them was this historical Smokey Bear fire rating sign. So, measures were taken to ensure the safety and preservation of this historical Smokey Bear sign. Protective material, similar to fire shelters used by crews in emergencies, a thicker building wrap was utilized. Although, it provides effective protection against radiant heat and some burning embers, it is not entirely fireproof. Furthermore, the area was cleared of flammable materials surrounding the historic fire sign to minimize the risk of fire or potential damage.
Earlier:
A BLM-contracted single engine air tanker (SEAT) was reported missing while assisting on a lightning start in the vicinity of the Falls #Fire on the evening of July 25, 2024. Search efforts began immediately and will resume today. The fire is located near #Seneca, Oregon on the #Malheur National Forest. No additional information is available at this time.
Update:
The SEAT aircraft belonging to North Dakota-based Aerial Timber Applicators was located this morning after an extensive search, and the pilot was confirmed lost in the crash.
This SEAT crash is the third for the 2024 season after the loss of a SEAT in New Mexico and the loss of Fire Boss in Montana on July 10th.
#Missing #plane and #pilot #FallsFire #Oregon ?
Flying wildfire response is so dangerous. Driving in Wyoming randomly came across this museum of firefighting aircraft. Some were outfitted with jet engines. The museum was established after a terrible loss of life one summer.
QFtMFT. This has been a bad season for SEATs. I kind of worry about the newer Very Large Air Tankers, jet powered. Knock wood.
The Park Fire, east of Chico CA is looking like a major gobbler - burning over 70k acres a day so far. Mind boggling. Back down to 0 percent contained after 2 days. Triple digit temps, low humidity, and steady winds. IOW, a real bitch.

Calfire contracted pilot from my local area died in a plane crash yesterday. Apparently, flying in route to work a fire. The deceased passenger was a helicopter mechanic.
Correct and yes those are hops. The Umatilla County Sheriff you see standing there is Adam Gregory of Dragon's Gate Brewery. Those are his hops but the Cayuse Vineyard is adjacent. I understand while there was heat damage the vines themselves did not burn. That was a crazy fire yesterday as there was a good wind. One started then a second got going and out ran the first. Umatilla had no one to spare to fight it as they are dealing with another fire to the south so they had to bring in crews from Walla Walla and surrounding areas. Everyone out here in SE WA and NE OR are spread thin at the moment. I hear they are bringing in crews from OZ and NZ.
So far I think the Kiwis and Ozzies are going to Canada. But we might end up getting some here. The IMSR (incident management sit report) for this morning shows…a lot of activity. That Park Fire in CA is garnering a lot of media attention, but CA fires always do.

Pro tip, the way the geographic areas are listed shows the national priorities set by the big dogs. Right now, the PNW is the highest priority.
^ heh. But it isn’t ski season.
How bad are whitefish and butte right now. Looking at the map whitefish looks ok but butte less so. Supposed to be camping in whitefish for the week then meeting family in butte next weekend but debating a change of plans due to smoke and my wife breaking her wrist. We have a tent trailer with no ac and no power sites so can’t escape smoke if we go.
Whitefish is currently good. AQI under 50, was over 100 until this cold front moved through. I think temps are looking good for the next 7 days and that should help keep smoke down. Missoula has also improved greatly in the past few days (was also over 100). I haven't watched Butte, but the Missoula improvement should help for Butte.
Just drove through both was hazy and some smoke. Into Bozeman got some convection temps dropped to near 70 skies cleared was like heaven this evening.
Park fire looked like a beast this afternoon from 150 miles away

It seems pretty fucking huge from a distance! Zeke Lunder is estimating it’s at 300k acres now. 40 miles in 54 hrs. He’s saying that it’s running in grass, brush, and small dense timber that behaves like brush.
Really sorry to hear about (and see) Jasper.
Butte - I take that back on current air quality. I forgot they have a fire just south of town. AQI is high.
Small historic town of havilah in Kern county burned down yesterday. Borel fire
I called this little guy in on the drive home from the store today. I wasn't the first person but the local crews got on it pronto and it was out in 30 min or less. A boat trailer lost a wheel and threw sparks before it slid to a stop. Fortunately it was a calm day and a good bit cooler than it has been.Attachment 497088
Good news on the Bench Lakes Fire being 72% contained. A few days if intermittent rain can make a big difference.

Good article on the stunning rate of spread of the Park Fire in NorCal. And Stephen Pyne knows.
Why the Park Fire exploded so quickly
That fire spread rate makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
Thx for the link MS. Surprised article didn’t mention the shithead who started it: https://www.redding.com/story/news/l...d/74551655007/
I believe in rehabilitation over retaliation, but if any crime called for a public stoning, this would be one.
Wow that is... insane. Wtf. Dude will be spending quite a bit of time locked up... again..
hey if any of you wildfire/ forestry guys are into the good boots
