Lake was skiing quite nicely today too. Typical Lake 5cm which meant closer to 15cm in spots on the back. Wasn't too cold to start, but did certainly get colder as the day went on. Time to hibernate for a few days now!
Marmot announced they will be closed Thursday&Friday. Smart move to do it early, easier to do on a weekday during ghe first week of the year.
SSV closed today
Quay for Thus and Fri
LL MIGHT open today.
Yikes, -20f in town! That arctic cold front is forecast to ride the rockies all the way to my house.
Fernie is closed Friday as well.
Just about every ski resort in western Canada is going to be closed or limited to lower mountain lifts for Fri & Sat....just when most resorts finally have enough snow to open 80-90% of the terrain.
Emergency alert for power usage?
Never seen that before.

The best part of it all is watching the conservatives blow up on twitter and bitch their tits off about the premier they elected.
^^^ I regret posting if this conversation is going political.
I'm just glad my power didn't go out.

Yah and it's a worldwide issue. There's little money, little desire for the Capex and a lot of green dreams thoughts and prayers for clean tech without forethought to plan for interim O/G steps. FortisBC just had their natgas pipeline extension to the Okanagan denied by the regulator on the basis that the province should be converting to renewables.
That sentiment isn't going to help people in the Vernon, Lumby area much during winter.
Relevance - Posted here cos Albertans like the central OK too!
cold snap should be ending Mon/Tues and we can get back to skiing (and less politics)
Does anyone have a recommendation for a ski guide local to Banff / Canmore? Thank you!

Won't get much better than any of these the around here
https://alpineairadventures.com/ is also good, and Jeff is a great guy as well.
Thank you!
Anyone skiing this Friday and interested in playing tour guide for a few laps? It’ll be my first time in the area, skiing solo on Friday either at SSV or Lake Louise.

Can any locals tell me how fernie, kimberley, and pano are skiing?
I'm going somewhere this weekend, just trying to decide where.

Was at Panorama Sunday. Coverage OK, had to watch for nubbins and other solid hazards if skied trees off Summit. Most fun were long groomers like Schober's Dream, top to bottom.
At Fernie Monday, reported 21 cm new but was only fresh on top third of mountain, sticky in the middle, slush at bottom. Rained in town Monday night, still warm here. Coverage excellent, but conditions are, as they say, "variable."
^^^ thanks for that.

At Louise today. It's skiing quite nice

where the power is a Legend ....
Solid gold hahaha
As a skier that lives in the upper midwest, I love Fernie. It has a mixed bag of weather conditions for sure.
My first time there was February 2003. Snowed ~meter the couple days before we arrived and received ~meter the next few days we were there. We skied for a couple of days, then the storm knocked the power out to the town and ski area on the third day. We got to the base area ~8am on the day of the power outage and waited around till 9am to see if the lifts would spin. They didn't
Started hiking up to the Bear's Den, which took us a long time. Warmed up and hotboxed the shit outta the Den. Others would walk in and turn around right away because of the smell and seeing 8 guys lounging around, laughing and smoking the devil's lettuce. Skied back down to the base area and hit up the Griz for beers. Fond memories
Going to be there soon (2/5-11) with family and friends. Hoping for the best, but expecting low tide. We'll still make the most of it
Are you going to take your wife and kids to the hot box this time?
"Dad, that was the best trip ever!"
People feel sorry for us midworst skiers - but what they don't get to enjoy is the fact that skiing anything other than skiing where we normally ski is awesome. 'Our vacations are better than their lives,' maybe?
:) My "kids" are old, late 20s and early 30s, and they're not into the burning of rope. So... no, to answer your question
Agree with your assessment of what's enjoyable to midwest skiers. My home hill claims to have 300 feet of vertical, not too sure that's true
I also visited Fernie as midwesterner.
My best friend got married at Island Lake and I remember it fondly.
I live in Aspen now and I’m at a point in my life where I probably won’t ever go anywhere else to ski.
But if I did, Fernie and the powder highway, would be high on my list.
We usually try to get over to Castle whenever we're at Fernie. If conditions in Fernie are challenging, the wind sift refills at Castle are welcome
Plus, Castle is usually empty, and the woman checking for lift tickets at the Sundance Triple Chair gives great hugs
