Bumping this up — 5 months in and honestly I can say she has changed me for the better! The wife and I are both back to work, and Ember is in day care and slaying it! Initially, it was a bit strange but what we have noticed is that when we bring her home we both get to spend 2 hours really focused on her vs feeling like we are ragged from being on baby duty all day!
Ended up getting back in counseling for 2 months which really helped — I was processing a lot and that helped massively. Specifically dealing with how to be more emotionally present and not wanting to emulate what my own father has done/is doing!

Great update! My wife and I had our first this year too... Baby girl. She's almost six months now. All day baby duty is exhausting in a way I've never experienced before. I'm on 4 10s right now, so I try to give my wife some time back on Friday and over the weekend.
Kudos to you for taking on some of those family of origin issues. That's so important. I am so hopeful to not repeat some of the generational garbage that has perpetuated in my family. Seems like raising a small human brings all of it right to the surface.

Awesome guys! I’ll have to go back and read thread when I can. Those early months/year were super hard at our house so you’re not alone or doing anything wrong. We had a hard time understanding how people’s kids around us seemed to be easy angels... I’ll say this, my boy is super easy now and probably the most behaved of our circle. The kids that slept hella, early on, are proving to be a lot more work now for some reason - their parents have said.
I haven't read through this thread, but I can tell you, do your best to be the best dad possible. Once those kids grow up to be fully functional and great adults that love you, it will all be worth it.
I sure hope that is true for us. The first 5 months every nap and bed time was preceded by 15 minutes to 2 hours of rocking in our arms.Quote:

I think that's behind us--she turned a corner at 5 months and started falling asleep by herself in the crib, and linking sleep cycles. Everybody likes that. First 3 hour nap this week, and with all that sleep she's developing and learning new skills like crazy.

The Snoo is your friend if baby requires lots of rocking.
We now have a 2 yo and 6 week old and man is it a lot of work. Makes having one feel easy. Tough to do anything. We are just hanging on to get through these next two years.

They are typical 8/6 boys. My 8 month old just crawled for the first time, and I’m both over over the moon excited and completely freaking out about the increased parenting load that is the result of this change.

Being that my wife and I are both only children….we stopped at 2 girls…lol.
We’ve been living paycheck to paycheck for 20 years and now having both in college we continue to hustle our way through the monthly financial struggle…..but, we are doing it.
Watching them grow up to be what they are today has been a hell of a rewarding ride. The trips we’ve taken around the country…the hiking, the skiing, enjoying the outdoors……has created a love for the environment, science, and recreation within my daughters that will hopefully pass on to their families someday….it’s all been totally worth it.
Again, as stated upthread…..wouldn’t change a thing.
All of this. My boy and girl are 22 and 20 and both out of state full time now. Got to say I sailed through the teens without any karmic retribution, getting into the outdoors with the kids from an early age was probably the reason we remained such a tight family unit.Quote:

You know what's fun? An 18 month old that can climb out of her crib in under 30 seconds even at it's tallest setting, with the mattress on the floor.
The first night it happened, I put her down and was watching hockey. About a minute later I hear her door open and she casually walks into the den, sits down and sucks her thumb without a word, staring at the TV. Very confused, I put her back and left the door cracked so I could see what was going on. Out in 30 seconds. Wife and I drop the mattress to the floor...out in 30 seconds.
How, you ask? By stemming like she's climbing a chimney route....pulls herself up as far as she can, then extends her legs against two adjacent beams while holding on to the rail, then swings leg up while pulling her body over. It's fucking crazy. And very problematic.
We started putting her in a sleep sack to immobilize her legs. She is not psyched.
Sleep Sacks were our friends for sure.
But if she's not ready to sleep, maybe watch some hockey with her? When she's done she will (hopefully) stay in place
