TR: Faces Dogs Make When you Take them Skiing

skifishbum... Your dog doesn't make a fuss about the booties? What led you to go the boot route, ice balls?

I spent 2 winters in my 20's training and racing sled dogs sprint teams. We'd put booties on certain dogs, often those with little cuts or hot spots. Some dogs would take them and others not so much. Not only would they manage to rip them off while running, a couple hours they would sh*t them out. So while running and pulling like crazy, they would manage to pull their booties off and eat them... all while pulling.

My dog Spider was pretty happy we bailed on our ridge walk / traverse and retreated to the trees for some deep goods.

My dog Spider survived a cornice failure and 820 foot fall yesterday.

The botton arrow ^^^ indicates where I saw dog tracks coming out of the debris. The fall height was mesured by my buddies Strava. We were walking the ridge scoping lines and Spider got too close to the edge. My partner was ahead of me taking pics and happend to be looking at Spider when the cornice failed. He said Spider fell at the fracture line and not the outer edge. This probably saved him from getting crushed by the a massive chunk of snow and ice that fell. I was 30 or so meters back and heard a loud thunder like sound. The size debris field indicates there was no step down situation or anything that would have further contributed to the possibility of a burial. Lucky doggo.

There's no way down that face. There is one place actually but not this year and not on this day as it is guarded by a huge cornice. Getting down to the debris field involved skinning up to the head of the valley (Big Simpson's) and skiing down. Spider's tracks indicate that he tried climbing back up that face a little further up and was not able to make it. 30 or so minutes had passed between the cornice failure and the moment below when we were reunited. The little dots mid image are me and my dog.

Thanks for the support gentlemen.

Lots of discussion about bringing dogs into the backcountry out there. I'll leave the moralizing and pedantic messaging to others, but holy sh*t I am happy I did not lose my buddy. It might seem weird to many (probably not those posting here), but that doggo is my best friend.

Kedar is a cool name btw. You got me googling that one.

I'm glad to hear he's doing alright! Spider looks like he's meant to be a creature of winter. I'd say hopefully he learned his lesson about cornices but judging by my dog's constant ability to eat nasty stuff and then hork it up by the back door at 5am I'm not so sure he will.

I feel as though I am monopolizing this thread with a barrage of pics of me skiing with my guy. But after a winter of mostly hill skiing with kids and leaving Spider in the truck, it's game on and we have been having a blast (mostly fun, the 800 ft fall being a notable exception).
