I was just talking about Hawksnest with my uncle and old man the other day. I skied there once but was too young to remember. I rue the fact that I never got to participate in a night session. Fuck Seven Devils for what they did to that place. I'd love to see it get back up and running with the expansion plans eventually realized.Quote:

First time we ever skied Catalahoochie was a meadows day, but it was also first time ever taking kids on skis and they were freshly 2 & almost 3, so needless to say we didn't get to enjoy meadow's much. In fact my wife was only one to get over there solo while I was giving the kids their first taste of Cherry Coke in the lodge to rally for a few more magic carpet rides.
Holy shit this is awful. Plenty of injuries and apparently one person was frozen to the lift.

hawksnest had some of the better terrain in the state… only time i skied it was in 2010 after it closed during that epic new years eve storm cycle

Last time I skied NC on a pow day was before I moved to Utah and it was the feb Storm in early 2016. Lapped the Wolf Ridge main lift line which no one was skiing and it was deep for NC standards...it was a cold storm as well. If I recall when I skied Cat the next day they had the Meadows open which is the only time I've hit it.
Wish Cat would just expand snowmaking to make it full inbounds
Sunday's looking to be a fantastic fucking evening. They're talking up to two FEET now. ALAS, not in the cards for me ATM.. But please someone get up there and share the stoke!
Hope it's nukin' up in the mountains. Go get it! Meanwhile back at home, conditions report. Snow folowed by sneet right now. Here's the thing. It almost never snows around here but I do see plastic sleds and saucers in the thrift stores from time to time.. usually for a DOLLAR so I buy them. My kids are grown, one still finishing high school so don't need a shed foll of plastic sleds.
I live in a neighborhood packed with people fairly new to America. Most of these kids have NEVER experienced a snow day. So, when that rare event happens, I put out a couple of the plastic saucer sleds for them to play with.. I also had some gloves my kids have outgrown.. Hope they have fun!

it was blowing all the bars up. at 1:50 in the video tetzen posted you can see the guy that they mercilessly stop in the flow lose the battle to hold his bar down. Having their skis/board on the footrest could just as easily been the reason those two got blown off.Quote:

Appalachian has announced that Sunday will be their last day, closing at 5pm for the season. I'll be there from about 11am til 2ish

Son's back from college so we're going to drive 3 hours, take a few turns.. and drive another three hours. I'm no longer motivated to do that more than a couple times a season. But when I've got a co pilot still all in. I hope after college he gets a job somewhere closer to skiing where I can impose a couple times a season hahahah..
Eyeballing Wintergreen for next weekend, but it's not looking good. Same shit happened last year between Christmas and New Years and they had to shut everything down for a week.
Two weekday tickets, pockets full of leftover ham and fried chicken, tank of gas to get me and the kid up here for a couple hours today. Mashed tater 60 degrees by 1pm. Still hellafun though.. and pretty cheap.

Working on throwing the groms in the car this afternoon to see how this storm develops in NC. I swear last night I saw forecasts of 8-10" but this morning reading forecast 2-4" which seems more realistic. Easy jokes to be made here too.
Will report on what we find.

Awoke to rain in Maggie Valley, was not inspiring at all. Just shy of the top of the mountain road leading to Catalahooche it finally turned to snow. Wet, wet snow.
Groms and I skied most of the day with just one candy bar and hot chocolate (coffee for dad) break. Going to try and get a few hours in the morning, should be sunny. Snow was fun. Kids had a blast. I expect it to be kind of empty tomorrow, today we waited in lines every lap.
I saw a small kid not get off at the top of the quad and the lift turn the corner and almost make it out from under the station before it was stopped. The "stop bar" or whatever you want to call it was laying on the ground. Two chairs later a young teen girl didn't load well and fell off the chair after hanging and yelling, from about 8' or so. Luckily, she seemed OK from where I was.
Bumping this thread to express the DESPAIR! I was looking forward to heading up to grab a few more turns until I looked t the web cams. I can't remember another time in my 20 years here where first weekend in March was BARELY open. Unless they can push some snow around to get the top of Appalachian Big Appal open I'm gonna pass on the 3 hour drive up there to pay full price and ski half of 365 vert. I think they are trying to hang on because a big slopestyle park contest is still scheduled there so cannibalizing the part to push snow over to the main big trail probably isn't going to happen.
Oh well. Glad I did get a couple days this season but this totally sucks!
Definitely a disappointing season in the Southeast / Mid-Atlantic. We lucked out and got a couple really nice days at Canaan in January, but other than that it's been pretty much a wash. Still have a couple Indy days that I was hoping to use over at Bryce, but I can't imagine they'll be open much longer.Quote:

This is the earliest I remember Wintergreen calling it after ten years of skiing there... sucks. Usually we have a few good March weekends of slushy spring skiing on Highlands, which is super fun.
