Good luck Plugboots, it will go great.
I might be turning the corner finally. I've been mountain biking again which sure helps mentally. What I'm not doing is walking for the sake of walking, as that seems to be the motion that aggravates my soft tissue issues.
Monday is the day for new hardware. My hip feels better than it has in years so the pre-hab must be working. I’m still second guessing the whole thing but know I’ll be happy on the other end.
48 hours out from surgery and it’s going well. Minimal swelling and only took the oxy the first night. I’m eating ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin regularly but can walk easily using crutches for balance.

Hmmmm. I like this song. I hope it will play again soon.
How's everyone's recoveries? Wondering if anyone has suggestions for cardio exercises while down with a bad hip. Currently I can't run and joint swelling means it's challenging riding my bike. I'm thinking of signing up at the local Y for their pool, also considering assisted pull-ups in volume.
Pool is a no-brainer if accessible.
I’m 3 weeks out and I ride a stationary bike for 10 minutes at the beginning of my PT sessions. I wouldn’t call it aerobic but it’s a good warm up. I asked about swimming and was told as long as the incision site is resolving it’s okay. I‘be been taking easy 1-2 mile walks for well over a week without any assistance as long as I remember my Tylenol and Naproxen.
There was a delay in getting my pre-surgery packet to me, but looking through it, the workouts are pretty silly. I mean, I’ve been working out almost as hard as I usually do, so I don’t really find it that hard to lift my ankle up a few times every day.
31 days out from surgery at this point. I was able to walk almost 3 flat miles last weekend and I'm down to PT 1x/week. I had my one month f/u with the surgeon and x-rays confirm all is well. The only issue I have is some stiffness/pain for a few steps after I'm sitting at my desk for a long time. It quickly goes away with use. I was told I might want to wait another month before skiing (fine by me so far this season).
Interesting that my surgeon did i didn't need any pt. I assume it was because i was strong going into the surgery.
And he's a strong skier so he should know.
In any case, recovery went well, mountain biking in less than 3 months, and skiing is better then before, primarily because i had zero internal rotation and now is normal.

Glad you're doing well Peruvian. I'm at 6 months and still struggling quite a bit with the tendonitis. I have a cortisone shot scheduled in early December into the psoas to see if that helps me. I've gone through the 20 PT visits my insurance allows, unfortunately. I could use another 20 of them.

Fuck yeah.
This is the one you want.

You have to buy the cuff and then I rented the unit for $100/week.
You really should have had it at home, when you got back.
Game Ready also makes one, that may be more readily available.
Game Ready or something like it is super nice. My PT had it and I used it every visit which was daily for a while.
I just used a soft re-freezable ice pack.
I'm sure you're fine without it but it's nice if available. It's dynamic compression + circulating ice water.
9 days out. Never used a walker, first couple days sucked uncontrollably. Today I walked 3/4 of a mile and I feel fine, (considering), but on the top of my hip at the inguinal region it will really really hurt, like I pulled a muscle, if I use that muscle to pull my leg.
Also, thanks for the info, i got a Polar Active Ice https://www.polarproducts.com/polars...oir-p32781.htm
and that seems to help the most. I see using this after my hip for other issues, so kind of a cool investment.
I have that one too.
It works ok, but the Nice Compression is just way better.
Having it at home, when you get back from surgery is key.
Just for everyone else, because hopefully, you'll never need it again.
That one's nice just to ice the knees after a big day.
glad to hear you are recovering well, plug.
Nice. Can see why you needed it.
First time flying since surgery. “Got any metal?”
Gotta go through the full scan thing now.
I had that flying to FLA in Dec. No big deal.
I can’t believe how much better I feel since getting my new hip. My knee, low back, and even my neck feels better. I’m able to stretch more and with more ROM and I honestly can’t believe how I skied and biker with such pain and limitations the last several years.
Fully back to XC and BC skiing within 10 weeks and other than being blown away by the lack of pain, I haven’t had any issues.
^^ Jealous.
Everyone says it's such a great surgery but at 8 months I'm maybe 80% back and wish I hadn't done it. I barely even enjoy skiing anymore, I ski like shit now.
Dude. Dang. Any answers or help from the doc?
I’m nine weeks out today and I feel like I’m getting small improvements every day. I’ve been cross country skiing five times. I’ll probably go again today, (classic). I’m just trying to be gentle, but I think at three months, I’ll probably be able to ski.
The doc is trying. It doesn't help that he's now 4+ hours away in the winter. We all thought it was psoas tendonitis (which FWIW occurs in 40% of THR's), but a cortisone shot in early Dec didn't do anything.
His next step is to do a 3 phase bone scan to rule out anything weird going on with the way the bone is attaching to the stem. But I'm pretty reluctant to do that, I feel like there's a 99.9% chance that the end result of that is me being $800 poorer just to get an email that says everything looks good. So I'm at a loss. Maybe it's time for a 2nd opinion. PT thinks it will magically get better, somehow, someway, around 12-18 months.
Frustrating as hell since I don't have any real game plan and I've been doing everything I possibly can on my end.
Efff.
That area where the iliacus and the psoas come into my hip has been the area that’s the slowest to come around, and hurt the most after surgery. Classic skiing is part of my rehab, but pulling the leg forward uses that area and definitely it hurts and is tight after.
Good luck.
I really sorry to hear, gb. I’m sure you are doing all the glute strengthening, etc. but it sounds like it’s beyond that at this point. I just got my portion of the hospital bill and fully understand you weighing the cost factor. Health insurance in this country is total and complete bullshit.
The only issue I have had is my new hip had made my leg noticeably longer (15mm or so). I’m sure it’s mostly because my other hip is so damaged and when it gets done the legs will be the same length.
