2020 Fuse
Nice looking bike! Is that a recon rear tire? Debating that for my build, what size is it?
I’m slowly amassing parts for my Chromag Stylus. Pike is in the shop for a rebuild, bought a brand new set of turbine cranks on Pinkbike, just grabbed an older set of DT Swiss wheels, a little more narrow then I wanted but can fit 2.5 easy and came with 350 hubs.
still need a BB, a front rotor and a couple of other things but it’s coming along well!

I’m liking my Blue Pig so much I’m half tempted to get this ^^ and drop 2.5 lbs.
What is out there for a 29'er hardtail that can run a 27.5 or 26" fat tire for winter riding?
Spot Rocker for plus (not truly fat) tires. I switched from a 29er HT to 27.5+ a couple years back and really dig it.
Right on. I'm really looking to replace my fat bike but would love to throw a 29er wheel for summer hardtail riding to get more use out of it.
I'm still a full squish fan, but my lunchtime trails are perfect for a hardtail.
Not full fat but the RSD Sergeant will go 27.5x3.8 and they make a rigid fork for it now. That was one of the selling points for me a few years ago but I haven't tried it yet. I would imagine that would do pretty well as long as the snow wasn't too soft/untracked.
Its nice to have a FS and a HT if you can swing it, to get some variety if you ride the same trails a lot. I tend to ride the FS on the technical terrain and the HT on xc trails. HT's really rail corners and are fun on the right type of trail. I know a lot of people bag on the plus size tires, but they climb like no other. You are only limited by your engine, they do not slip. They are also way easier on the body and I haven't noticed any drawbacks. One of my regular rides is an 18 mile XC type trail (Centennial Cone on Front Range) and my strava PR's are on the 27.5+ not my 29er race bike.
Yeah, I couldn't get my 2.8's dialed on my Hightower. Too much sway railing corners for me. I want a skinny 29er...2.3-2.5 for dirt and a fat 27.5...3.8 - 4.0ish for snow. Not sure its possible with geo today or not.
Since my Stumpjumper Evo was stolen I decided to get back to simple things and ordered RSD Middle Child frame. Going to build it around 27.5x2.8 wheels, 160mm fork. Just waiting for shipping notification.
Another interesting frame was Ribble HT 725, but they are far and I liked an idea of sliding dropouts. Both share very similar geometry.

Kinda crazy how capable a long ( >1240 mm WB), low, slack (HA < 64 degrees static) HT is. I’ve been on a few hardtails from recent years that were considered progressive geo but apples and oranges compared to a Blue Pig, Moxie etc.
Running 35 mm stem w/ 800 bars.
27.5 with a largish volume 2.6 tire seems the best setup for me. Ends up at 28” outer diameter, has just enough squish but avoids that bouncy weirdness of the dentist plus size tires. But maintains a flickable fast accelerating kinda pump track bike feeling when compared to a 29 x 2.5.
How you liking your Z1? I’m currently sitting here impatiently waiting for UPS to drop off my Z1 coil for my Chromag.

Keep the 3” tires of you get a Stache, they’re half the point. 29+ tires are lower profile than 27.5+ and don’t have the same vagueness and weird cornering at speed. If you’re gonna go stupid, go full stupid.
FTR, I’m generally not a fan of plus tires in any size, but I had a blast on the Stache I rode.
My wife caught me looking at this beaut from Chromag.
I'm not worried about looking at the Padded Room, but a new bike right now is not in the cards.

It is a rootdown actually
looking to replace my 2009 Felt Niner pro, XL....a lightweight x-country 29er - was looking for a little more head-slack, tires in the 2.5" range, and lightweight. saw this....anyone with experience on this Ibis DV NX? 120 fork, 2.6" tires, 68.5* head tube.

Hard to go wrong with an Ibis, but I wouldn't put it in the category of progressive geometry. Probably a nice middle ground between your old bike and some of the other bikes in this thread.
I’ve had my eye on one of those DV frames. Good deal for a carbon frame and it would build up nicely as a burley XC bike.

That's my plan...not full progressive - if my tires are off the ground, it's usually not planned.
I got a DV9 this spring. Only a few mellow rides on it so far since our trails are still melting out but I'm digging it.
I was looking at the same criteria as you- lightweight 29'er with a more slack head tube and this fit the bill, which was nice bc I'm also an Ibis superfan.(also have an HD which is my 4th or 5th ibis mountain bike)
I see myself riding the hell out of this this summer. added a bike yoke dropper post to it too

Just got done building this one...excited to go rattle my teeth out.
2019 Kona Honzo ST
SLX 12 speed drivetrain and brakes
Marzocchi Z2 140mm fork
PNW Rainier dropper
Pedals, stem, bar Raceface Chester
Built one up, road it one ride, then sold it. Its geo works best with a 100mm fork, even then the reach is stupid short and front is too tall with the external bearing cup. I had a medium with a 120mm fork, the reach was shorter than most smalls. Just my opinion as I am sure its a good bike for the right person but it doesn't belong in the thread.
