Yes, I'm aware you can strip out the hole more easily, which is probably why they don't use it more.
So, I took my Eagle XO1 bike out for a four hour ride yesterday...I was blown away by how sh!tty the braking and (especially) the shifting was compared to the Shimano 12 speed. It felt like going back 10 years in quality.
It really was that big of a difference...two finger braking at times, and clattery shifting with skips (new chain and cassette). XTR shifts under any load, and is one finger braking ALWAYS.
Gonna ditch the sram for XT 12.
after a season of disappointing shift quality on the OEM GX that came on my Bronson, I swapped to XT 12spd this week...night and day! I spent over an hour on the weekend trying to get the GX to not shift terribly, new cable, hanger, and 45 minutes of adjustment fiddling to only get it 'okay'....put on the XT on Monday, adjusted limit screws, tightened cable, put on chain, 2 quarter turns on the barrel adjuster, and it's perfect. First ride last night and the first time in months I didn't have have a single, let alone typical multiple, mis-shift. It's absolute bullshit that companies are spec'ing GX garbage on $4000+ bikes, it's SLX level at best, and frankly I'd take SLX over GX in the future. And the two-way multi-release shifters are just so much better than sram's junky ergonomics and functionality.
My next bike will probably have an XTR/AXS mutant drivetrain. XTR cassette and chain, AXS shifter and derailluer.
Should be sweet.
I still find it curious that they never improved their 11 speed cassette offerings. Unless the world thinks 11 speed is dead.
They did have an XTR 9100 11 speed 10-45 micro spline cassette in the works, but they canceled it. It had 12 speed spacing and worked with the new 9100 12 speed shifter and derailleur and chain.Quote:

yeah, I've got 3 year old xt 11spd on my hardtail and aside from the cassette being pretty average weight wise, as a package it's performed exceptionally, just a new chain once a year.Quote:

I run Shimano shifter and rear mech, but prefer SRAM cassettes (last much longer).
Shimano releases a wireless mtb drivetrain only 5 years after Sram. But it doesn't have a clutch and loses the downshift trigger ergonomic feature. Credit for making backwards compatible though.
I like that the new XTR has a medium cage 9-45 cassette option. I also like that their shifter is normal shaped. I don't particularly like any of sram's e-shifters.
Other than that, it's not particularly light, it's very expensive, and yeah, no clutch seems dumb.

My take on the Shimano vs SRAM thing : in 2004 i went to interbike SRAM was not so popular as shimano but if you attended their morning seminar they told you to pickup your free chain from the SRAM booth they had hot girls in red wigs red hotpants giving temp tatoos they had a very good a good bartender making free drinks at the Truvativ booth I won a roxshox Reba which I sold to pay for the entire trip
Shimano was telling eveyone rapid-rise which had not worked the first time was gona be re-introduced in 2005 a whole bunch of demo bikes had rapid rise so you ride one at the demo day and think it was fucked
A whole bunc of bikes came spec'd with SRAM in 2005 SRAM they had bought Tuvativ and roxshox,
rapid rise flopped again I don't think shimano has ever recovered
I have my first bike with Transmission and I am not impressed. Seems cool but really not great to live with. I have had it for a few months and I have noticed I have taken a few impacts on rocks that I think are because of just how large the system is. It is heavy. I have had two rides where it stopped working with a fully charged battery. I cleaned the contacts and that fixed it but that should not happen. Slow shifting bothers me. XTR actually solves most of my qualms. 9-45 is really cool and lighter. Shifter ergonmics sound less terrible than transmission. Much smaller RD when using 9-45. Faster Shifting Transmisison is an e bike product. It is not good for all other bikes.
No clutch, though. Pinkbike review did not dance around the issue, the chainslap is pretty bad, albeit less bad with the 9-45.
I read the pinkbike review and a few others.
Pinkbike was the only one that had the chain slap issue. I think it is more that they did a different solution for chainslap. A few paces I read commented that the spring system seemed to work well and I believe the radavist said in the comments section they didn't have any of the chainslap issues other places reported.
Time will tell though. Shimano clutches were one of the worst parts of the last gen. That and the XT cages that bent if you looked at them.
PB has such a hudge erection for SRAM, it was never going to be objective.

I have XT on a few bikes. It is the current best group if you care about price at all. SLX is right there too. BUT - one mild twisting impact on the cage and it never shifts right again. They get slightly twisted and no amount of tinking or limit screws fixes it. Similar to a bent hanger but the cages are really hard to fix as they are supposed to be slightly bent. There was a long time where it was really hard to find the cages as a stand alone part. I started just buying $50 SLX rds on closeout. XTR does much better as it is a carbon cage (12 speed mechanical).

I had a new Trek Slash XT that the derailer broke within two weeks.
The Tech, not the owner, told me I sucked up a stick and broke it, not covered. They didn't have a replacement.
I told them to take it off and send it in and they could keep the replacement, because I'm not ever coming back.

Everyone has an anecdote but really there is no way to guess if a der is going to break cuz nobody hits them the same way and nobody tests ders to see how much force is needed before they break if somethink breaks YOU broke it and btw you are gona buy another one which seems like a sucessful product to me
What is more telling is if you walk around bike store show rooms what do you see spec'd which brand is selling more parts in all bike categories from the entry level hardtail you dont care about to the top end bikes to the Eebs and why ?
it could be price point of a so-so part but buy thousands to spec an entry level bike or at a mid price point is how $ is made and I have seen Shimano snatch defeat from the jaws of victory
XT 12spd chain + cassette shifts the best and it's not even close. As said above though the XT rear mech is the most fragile little baby ever. Probably works fantastic if you live somewhere with perfectly groomed mellow singletrack and you ride 6x a summer. If a rock even gets close to the mech it twists itself up and will never shift right again. Enduro race use? Good luck. They last a week at best.
Now AXS mech + XT cassette/chain = the jam.
I guess I'm not hard core enough. My buddy broke one, but he fell on a pile of rocks, so I think that had more to do with it.
and how fast was he going ^^ it would be interesting to do destructive testing by putting ders in a vise and measuring the force used before they break

Just throwing a contrasting data point out there. Close to a million vert on a couple 12spd m9100/m8100 rear derailleurs in a very rocky place with no issues at all. they all shifted at least as well as transmission, cost half as much, and weigh half as much. no thanks on any of this new electric garbage or anything without a properly functioning clutch (includes eagle, axs, and apparently this new Shimano stuff!)

I dont think anyone has said 8100 is bad. Just that the cage is soft. It is stamped metal easy to slightly bend it so it is 100 percent rideable but just shifts poorly. Impact to the RD body is fine - cage is not. Bought the new 9-45 cassette yesterday using a 20 percent off coupon. Debating between a medium cage 9100 vs the new electronic version. I think I can get 15 percent off the upgrade kit so it is about 500 more for the electronic stuff. Leaning toward mechanical. I will need cranks as well so I am thinking of getting Race Face Eras. Going on the XC bike that gets most of my annual miles.
Part of the problem is that shimano is kinda missing a groupset. XT is the rough equivalent of sram GX in terms of quality (or at least durability), weight, and price.
But XTR is closer to Sram XX1 by those same metrics. So shimano is kinda missing that X0 level groupset. Higher quality and more durable than XT / GX, but doesn't go down all the expensive rabbit holes to save weight and be blingy like XTR and XX1.

Thats a really good point Toast! Hadnt really thought about it that way, but totally makes sense. Especially with SLX and XT being essentially the same thing with only very minor differences now too.,
