I guess what I was saying is that they are not as unique or as tough as the 80s, because the parts that were designed to go I to them, the later transmission, the engine, were designed to fit into multiple vehicles with lower duty requirements.
Or you could say that Toyota overbuilt all trucks and suvs. I did beat the crap out of my past 4runners with no breakages.

I don't know shit about various vintages or 2 v 4 pinion, but I have an 06 tundra limited 4.7l and love it. I bought it with 106k had them do timing belt, etc before purchase. I just put in leaf springs and shocks all around that was like 1700, but other than tires, brakes, and oil changes she's been a dream.Quote:

I sold the 88 FJ62 I owned for over a decade last Fall. I loved it but the love affair started to fade when I could see rust in the quarter panels, couldn't talk to my kid due to the noise and, worst of all, the engine was just so underpowered going up the hills to go skiing. I baselined it and am slowly modifying it. It's way more complicated than the 60 or even 80 series, but I love that V8. As much as I think of myself as an overlander or serious offroad guy, 90% of my driving is either around town, on a forest service road or to go skiing. That's when the V8 is welcomed. I can haul stuff, I can pass cars going up 90, fully loaded, etc. I even like the AHC ride - I was going to rip it out but now I'll just drive it into the ground and replace later. I still miss the FJ62 style and I miss being able to wave to fellow LC owners and having them wave back (no one waves to you in a soccer mom LX470... first world problems, I know), but maybe with enough mods that will change.
That said, with the 40 series going for big bucks, the 60 series rising quickly in prices, the 80 series is probably the next better investment. I'm just digging on my 100 series.
So all 40 series that are not rust buckets are high $$? More so if they have a v8? Collector's items types of things? How about if they actually get driven and used, but by a little old lady who lives in the woods?

I can think of better ways to spend my money, but I can't deny the bad-ass factor of these trucks.

You're doing it wrong. Sell the Westy and keep the LC. I had a few FJ55's years ago and turned one into the greatest go anywhere stealth rv. I pulled the back seat and made a flat floor with hinged panels to access the now open space. I built a box that ran the length of the drivers side from the front seat to the tailgate and put a 5 gallon fresh water tank hooked up to a hand pump and sink with a drain hose that went to the outside when the door was open slightly and by the gate I put a hole in the counter top that a propane stove sat in. Mine had an electric back window so I could open it an inch or two to vent the gas when I used the stove. I had lots of hidden storage in the space under the floor and more than enough room to lay flat for comfortable sleeping.Quote:

Wife's Minty Cruiser needs some new rotors and pads. Mine needs new calipers, since only 1 of 4 pistons on the front passenger caliper are actually functioning. Pads and Rotors look good although I might upgrade it all as well... stopping is good.

$17,000 is getting up there. That is almost my setup and if someone offered me $17k, I'd really consider signing the title over. I have a better lift and few other things on mine but I also have a few minor body dents. If you use it, it's going to get dents. Mine started out pristine.
$6k for the other is okay. The rear springs in the 450 are a bit softer than the 80 and lose their height over the miles. But really, you're going to lift it for a grand anyway so who cares. Use it as a bargaining tool. No lockers on the $6k and that's going to be $3,500 to $4k for ARBs if you want lockers but the good news is if you go that route, you can regear to 4.88s while it's torn down. The other bits brand new are going to run the difference in price roughly if you pay someone to install. Almost everything it has except the castor bushings can be changed with hand tools and a grinder.
Arbs are pricey, but... You can get a lock right or an aussie auto locker and toss it in the rear for a couple hundred bucks. You get instant traction when you need it, and no air lines to fail, or electric actuators. I had one in a past 80, and with the awd, you would never know it was there until it kicked it when needed. I had no issues driving in snow, tight turns, etc... Just instant traction when needed off road ing.
