There’s no prize money at Valentino Rossi’s annual 100km dirt-track race, but the racing is just as vicious as MotoGP
Perhaps one day Valentino Rossi will work out how to sit back and rest on his laurels. But he’s not there yet.
Eleven weeks before his 40th birthday and two days after MotoGP’s longest-ever season of racing and testing, he was back at it: racing motorcycles around in circles (and hurting himself), because that’s what he likes doing.
Sunday was the biggest day of the year at the VR46 Motor Ranch, the training venue that Rossi created in 2011 just outside Tavullia – the hilltop town where he grew up.
Rossi and his gang train here most days, mastering the art of throttle control and machine control around a 2.5km dirt course that includes 13 corners: lefts, rights, uphill, downhill, all graded and manicured to provide just the right amount of grip: not too much and not too little. It’s an epic facility that dwarfs many commercial tracks.
The 100-kilometre race has been the main event at the ranch since 2014. In theory, it’s a bit of postseason fun with his friends and his young apprentices from the VR46 Riders Academy, but the reality is somewhat different.
There are no world championship points up for grabs, no prize money, no bonus money, no grandstands crammed with adoring fans, but you’d never know it. The battle for the lead – Rossi and co-rider Franco Morbidelli versus Mattia Pasini and team-mate Lorenzo Baldassarri – was fast and furious throughout most of the hour and 50 minutes. As rough and as tough as anything you see in MotoGP.

Are MotoGP bikes too easy to ride?
Some people think modern electronic control systems and ever-improving mechanical performance makes MotoGP bikes undemanding. They are wrong, says Mat Oxley, and here’s why
They call it progress. This year’s 1000cc MotoGP bikes make around 280 horsepower and are good for 220mph/355km/h. These machines are the pinnacle of 125 years of development of the internal-combustion engine and motorcycle chassis and electronics technology. In some ways they are easy to ride, but in other ways they are not.
One hundred and ten years ago Londoner Will Cook turned up at Brooklands – the world’s first purpose-built racetrack – aiming to become the first motorcyclist to break the 90mph barrier.
His secret weapon was a huge JAP engine (manufactured at JA Prestwich’s factory in Tottenham, north London) which had been rejected by TT racers because it was too much of a handful on the Isle of Man roads. The 80-degree v-twin had a capacity of 2714cc (!), with a bore and stroke of 120mm.
“It is a fearsome looking object, mostly engine,” wrote a reporter from Motor Cycling magazine.

The JAP was anything but easy to ride and just starting it was a bit of a nightmare: First find a steep hill, then remove a blanking plug from the top of each cylinder and poke in a wheel spoke to check the position of each piston. Next squirt some neat fuel towards the inlet valves, open the valve lifters of both cylinders, push like buggery, drop one lifter as the first cylinder fired (with a bit of luck), drop the other lifter as the second cylinder fired.
This is when things got really difficult. Once the engine was alive, the rider had to constantly juggle with the ignition advance/retard lever, the air-mixture lever and the throttle lever. These were the only ways to control his speed, because the engine had direct drive to the rear wheel, so the wheel turned at engine speed. There was no clutch, no gearbox, no brakes and no suspension.
Cook was a brave man and knew what he was doing. He surpassed 90mph at Brooklands, but a technicality denied him the official record.
(Interestingly this entire motorcycle was manufactured in three different factories in London: JAP in Tottenham, North London Garages in Highbury and Chater Lea in Finsbury. The 2714cc engine was later used in an aeroplane.)
Was the NLG JAP difficult to ride? Christ, yes! Would a Honda RC213V be easier to ride around Mugello? Of course.
But there is a great misunderstanding about the ease of use of racing motorcycles. When a rider comes into his team’s garage and tells his engineers that their latest modification has made his motorcycle five per cent easier to ride it doesn’t mean they’ve made his job five per cent easier... Mat Mladin Arrested and Charged With Child Molestation
Australian Motorsport Hall of Famer Mladin was taken into custody on March 13 following a lengthy police report. He appeared by video link before Magistrate Ian Guy on Wednesday, March 25, in the Campbelltown Local Court in New South Wales, Australia. He was granted bail of $50,000 and told to surrender his passport.
First reported by Australia’s The Daily Telegraph newspaper in an article penned by Daniel McGookin (you can read the story behind their paywall here) and later by Roadracing World and Superbike Planet, 48-year-old Mladin stands accused of four sex offenses, including “sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 10; two counts of intentionally carry out a sex act on a child under 10, and one count of intentionally incite a child to do a sexual act on him,” according to the Daily Telegraphy article.
