For just about all the reasons you mention I am considering the L.
For what I want to do the air cooled is fine, I like the way it makes power and it's very easy to service.
I will be making a few minor tweaks that are more in line with the "R" air cooled model however.
As far as the suspension is concerned, for gravel forest service roads, there is plenty to work with both from a stock and a donor perspective.
I know what you mean though...
I roll an XC-W and it's heads and tails better on dirt than any XR variant.
Now that looks like fun.
I would sign up for three hours of that...
Huzzza!
Be interesting to see what a motogp bike would do around there.
If you could find anyone brave enough to try it.

My current bike is an 07 300 XC-W, which I plated. It gets me by for riding into some town for gas, but all I have is a non DOT head light and a rear brake light. No horn, signals or DOT tires. basically a full on dirt bike which I squeaked by inspections
I had an XR-400, which is about the only bike I regret selling. That thing was indestructible and had no radiators to bend or rupture. It wore you out kickstarting it if you laid it down though. If it wasn't for the hard starting when flooded, it would be the perfect loaner/beginner bike. The same bike with electric start would be pretty sweet.
Really nice. more than enough hp for your playground and nothing like the wind making you light. The dry clutch is a nice touch.
Look into the free floating rear brake conversion. Entrance will be much more predictable and you'll find yourself going much deeper comfortably.
continue to enjoy

Does anyone know if there's a standard/most common powersports finance rate?
If anyone has figures like % they put down, and the monthly rate they paid, would be much appreciated.
Feel free to pm me.
PM sent.
Responded to, thanks!
Only bike I ever financed was through HD. Had to carry full insurance so I paid it off as fast as possible. Nice thing was there was no penalty for paying it off early. Since then I've only self-financed bikes via our home equity line of credit, which was a much better rate, but neither of them were/are new.
This is my current ride

but because I've had it for 12 years now and had a cam chain tensioner fail at the end of last season, resulting in piston damage, I'm in the market for one of these

Started out on Yamaha 60cc at 12 in the burbs.
After trouble with the law was forced to sell it and got into road bikes of the human powered variety.
Then the family moved to the country when I was 16 so it was game on again with a Yamaha DT250.
Loved that bike, couldn't kill it, even rode it through the flooded river road that led to our place.
Misjudged the depth and the water came up over the tank with only the bars visible=River Hikeling(pushing the motorcycle through water)
Winter riding was also fun on it too as non-existent traffic meant fresh track power sliding.
After my brother took it out and got caught without any paperwork, I had to get it out of the police impound.
It disappeared without a trace, never to return and ended my Yamaha love affair.
Never had a street bike but always had buddies that I could borrow bikes from....Kawasaki GPZs, 900/1000s, Yamaha RZ500, R6s for adrenaline spins in the boonies.
Later bought Honda a few CBs and CBRs.
My current ride is a CBR600RR which is a blast to ride, as its so easy to make it go wherever you want almost telepathically.
I considered going to a literbike but as a commuter, it'd be a pig on gas and would go through rear tires too fast, especially driving by the tach.
Definitely would buy a BMW S1000RR if I had extra cash...................... and my own private track.
Sold my Ninja this week. It's a little bittersweet, as I loved that bike, but sold it so we could get something my wife can also ride, which is pretty sweet.

Stumbled across this today, found it funny
Is there a name for those little fuckers that come on new tires? And why are they there?
Finally!! New rubber. 14k in a year. Fuck all you fuckers!
With all the best intentions, and new rubber, fork seals, brake pads, toasted airhawk cover replaced.
New cards under the seat.
See you fucking fucks on the road.
I still need to do an oil change and a lube tomorrow, but finally, it's game on.
I don't know whether to thank Bunny, or try to convince him to extend his lease?
I think it has to do with the molding process. Either injection points or a place for excess air to escape
Bought a "new" (to me) bike yesterday. 2012 Triumph speed triple. Rizoma grips/turn signals/fender eliminator. 6000 on the odo. Owned by a Mercedes mechanic. Pretty psyched about it. Black. Dont have a pic yet but it looks just like this

Thanks guys, its been a blast so far :)

That is a good 2 inch chicken strip tho.

As documented earlier in this thread, I've had an '04 FZ6 for 2.5 years now and enjoy the hell out of it. Its a fourth vehicle and I only ride when its 70 degrees plus, and I've stll managed to put about 7k miles on it so far.
I'm thinking hard about the next bike. I'm older and just not real wild about the...aestic of this bike, though it really does just about everything I want to do (maybe could use some more storage space). The FZ came up really close and cheep to me, but had been looking at shadows forever before that. I cipher any shadow below 1k cc, I'm gonna regret/chick bike, right? anything specific I need to be thinking about ? somebody once said that "shadows drag x" bad (can't remember, foot peg or something)...any similar bikes I should consider? Vstar etc?
If you're coming from a sport bike then all cruisers will drag pegs/floor boards. It'll take some time to adjust your riding style, mainly slowing down in the turns, but you'll get there.
Regarding displacement, cruisers are all about the low-end grunt (ie. torque) so anything under 1000cc is just a lump.
This summer I noticed that I'm your opposite temperature-wise. With gear on it's just not fun to ride when it's higher than 80deg because I'm sweating my ass off. My favorite temp is in the low 60s.
Vstar, Vmax are all in that category.
I'm not crazy about Harleys, but I don't mind Iron 883.
I used to ride all four seasons.
I did 5 hour endurance race in 103F, rode frozen lake in Fargo below -20F.
Now, I don't even take my bike out if it's higher than 40% chance of rain.
What happened to me???!!!
The only time I don't ride (well, other that the above mentioned heat and obviously snow) is when it rains. Not that I'm worried about sliding out or the discomfort (had a great rainsuit for a long time) but everyone else on the road turns into a drooling windowlicker. Only times I've ever gotten close to being hit by another driver was in the rain.
Fuck that.
Maybe you're starting to feel your mortality due to aging and having more shit to stay alive for.
Not sure what your budget is, but if I was going that route at all my list would include in order
Ducati Diavel
Yamaha VMax - pretty damn ugly, but the riding will make you love it
Harley (and only harley I'd ever recommend) V Rod
BMW R nine T - did you ask for a bike like this? No. But just look at it!
What about the Triumph Thunderbird? Sat on one this summer and it felt nice. Good looking ride too.
Big fan of the VMAX so another vote for it. V-Rod is also a good suggestion. Add in the Honda VTX and Yamaha Raider. Ran across a 2004 V-Rod with 4,000 miles on Craigslist the other day. Guy was asking $5k which didn't seem like a bad place to start.
Cheap asses do well with Honda VTX 1300's. There's nothing to scoff at with the older VMAX's either - still a potent machine. Used to sell all the brands except for Harley, though, and even brand new the 1300 was the bee's knees deal for cruisers. The 1800 was something like 13,999 while the 1300 was something like 9,999 for almost the same bike, really. I think the 1800 was fuel injected while the 1300 was carbed.
The Yamaha star cruisers though definitely had a more appealing after market offering and are very solid machines. Just stay away from all the Suzuki Boulevards and shit like that. Mechanics hated them.
