PSA: Repair you own fucking edge compression

Fellow dentists, I’m repairing my beloved Spatulas and I need advice. As you can see in the pics, I’ve cut out the base and am ready to patch, but I’m trying to figure out what to do with the cracked metal in the core. My plan was to pry the crack open and flood it with g-flex, screw it down with a few base screws, and then g-flex over everything and patch with base material. The main issue I see here is that the heads of the screws could keep the base patch from sitting flush.
Other option is to cut out the cracked metal with a dremmel and then patch, but not sure how that’ll affect the strength of the ski or if the crack will spread once the ski is deeply flexed once it’s all back together and on snow. Maybe I could drill a small hole through the metal at the end of the crack to keep it frown spreading, like you would on a ski boot?
I don’t ski these a ton, but get out on them 3-4 times a year for Shane’s sake and want to keep them alive. What say you?

What if you pried the crack open, flood it with Gflex, but then skip the screws and just clamp the metal with a plastic bag over the Gflex and metal (so it doesn’t bond)then a block of wood that fits in the patch area to clamp to?

I wonder if the epoxy would have trouble bonding to the rust?

I'd grind off any rust before epoxy, and because that would be hard to get off the under side of that flap, I'd probably just cut it out.

But I'm not the expert here so YMMV.

Por15 is my go to for treating rusty metal, but I've never used it on skis. You'd want to wire wheel or grind (flap disc) off as much loose rust as you can.

Fair point - I’m on it with the rust. I’m kind of leaning towards cutting out the cracked metal. I don’t think epoxying without screwing will work because it’ll likely pop loose the first time I deeply flex the ski and that’ll also pop out the base repair. But on a ski like the Spat where the metal is pretty essential to the integrity of the ski, is cutting out a piece directly underfoot a bad idea?

Anybody know a SLC shop that sells edge material? Just opened up my Moment Govs to attempt an edge replacement and discovered that the edge material I got from Utah Ski Gear is a different size (the little mounting tabs on the edge material dont match up). I called Lofthouse (out of stock) and powder house (wont sell it to me). Any other suggestions? Would love to get these suckers epoxed and clamped tomorrow so I can thrash them again in the Friday pow.

Shoot an email to skilab. I’m pretty sure they are in SLC and they can likely sell you a short piece of edge.

Who cares about the tabs? Is the edge itself the same thickness?
Try WSD, Hinterland or any other local manufacturer.
I've got some ON3P edge material. Gonna be way thicker though, meaning more removal for you

Thanks! I was thinking it made sense to match the tabs because the OG edges on the moments are essentially inlaid in a layer (e.g., the edge almost snaps into place). Seems more stable to reuse the existing grooves for the tabs versus scraping off the material holding the edge tabs and relying on screws/epoxy alone.

Don't overthink it brother!. Remove w/ sharp chisel. Those 'keys' are epoxy. You'll create new ones upon layup. Don't waste your time with screws.. Besides, to try and use existing keys is gonna leave you with having to make very precise cuts on each edge end. Those 2 areas of edge coming together is an area that you will never be able to seal. Make them fit well

I facilitated the sale of a pair of skis for Mntlion last week.
Yesterday I reached out to the woman to see if they were able to make a deal, and she said that her husband may have broken them already. I asked her for a picture, because most people over-exaggerate damage. I was thinking maybe a core shot, maybe a broken edge, something that could be fixed with a little work.

edit: how in the hell? the binding screws would have had to all strip also

Apparently he had an "incident " with a tree.

I'm not sure if that means the skis were on the roof of the car and he rolled the car off the road and into a tree, but he hit something hard.

Like to use one or 2 of the little screws. Not for strength but to help the edge stay in place while I epoxy, clamp etc. second scraping the old “tabs” off. The epoxy will create new ones. If you have a hot box or something to keep them like 100 degrees after epoxying the cure and flow is exponentially better.

Rubber tape(aka VDS) between edge and core/laminate.

I still need to flatten the base to clean up the JB weld that oozed out, but this held up to plenty more rock hits today. I truly appreciate all the tips in this thread...gave these beat up skis another few weeks of life (at least!).

I'm trying to figure out if these are beyond hope. Edge is pretty compressed. Lots of base damage and some sidewall cracking.

Any thoughts? I'm not used to this type of damage on skis.

I remember way back an interview with Eric Pollard talking about innovation, rocker vs. camber in particular. He said something like he wanted a ski that "looked broken".
To me yours doesn't look very healthy, more than just sidewall damage at least from the pics. Does it have any strength left in it at all? I broke one (not a fish) a few years ago but it was obvious, pretty much a noodle. I couldn't even ski it down.

Amongst your tools, this oyster knifeAttachment 359241Attachment 359242 is a delam killer. Easiest, best way to get full saturation of epoxy into delam.
Check over what tools(o knife or similar, clamps, heat source) and materials(sintered base material, epoxy) you need.
But seriously, your repair should be very similar to the original post. Just make sure EVERY crack in your sidewall gets filled before clamping. If you have questions man, just ask or feel free to pm me.

Thanks to this thread, they came out pretty well. Ended up cutting out that cracked metal, epoxied the shit out of it, threw a bit of fiberglass drywall tape in there to fill some volume, put in a base patch and clamped with heat.
Fixed a few other minor delams over the summer as well.
Skied them hard three times this week and they’re holding strong!

I managed to do this to my 4 day old Enforcer 104 Frees.

Didn’t notice a particularly hard hit during the few days I was on them, but I must have hit just the right place at just the right angle and found this when I put them on the tuning bench.

It doesn’t look nearly as bad as a lot if the damage in this thread so I assume it’s fixable. Is this just epoxy + clamp + now it’s an outside edge only?

I'd just seal that one up and clamp it. Do your best to get epoxy to wet out the delam

Does the sidewall sound hollow if you tap it w/ a screwdriver handle?

Whacked my ski good.

Both edges are blown out a little, but seem to be solid still-- so I just plan to bend those back into place and then put two long base material patches down both sides of my ski. Not sure about delamination/if I should do anything special about the fact that the base is bubbled 1-2mm lower than the edge (you can also see the stress marks in the sidewall, which spook me a little).

This is my first real surgery outside of binding mounting/ski tuning so I'm a little nervous to just dig in with a knife but this thread is super helpful so thank you! Just wondering if you see anything I should pay particular attention to here or if it is pretty straightforward? Also, is there anywhere to pick up base materially locally (REI, maybe my local ski shop will sell it, I dunno) or should I get the stuff from tognar? Thanks in advance.

I came into some skis that I want to give to a friend, but which have a small edge compression/crack (pics). Base and sidewall seem intact. No sure what the preferred repair would be, squirt some epoxy in there? Replace a section of the edge? Not worry about it until it gets worse? WWTD (what would tuco do)?

You can see the seal is broken from base/edge and edge/sidewall. I'd straighten out that edge. Once it's straightened, it'll be easier to get epoxy in there. Work epoxy into delam well then clamp and continue heat until cured.
Also if you can tap sidewall w/ screwdriver handle and it sounds hollow, you're probably best off going base patch route so sidewall can be addressed
