Take a late 70's Westy with the better camping layout. Drop a 1.8t that is spinning backwards (look for it on the Samba in the Vanagon section) with the 5spd mt.
Strip the interior and insulate it good, also add in a propex heater. With the LSD available in the newer trans and a full set of studded tires it should actually be good in the winter and you'll shock people passing them uphill form the power of a tuned 1.8t.
Avoid wasserboxer engines at all costs! If you get a water cooled vanagon drop the money to put a subie motor in it.Quote:

I'm picking up a 73 bus at the end of the summer that needs an engine swap. I've been thinking about doing a suby conversion, but still on the fence. Any recommendations for swapping out a 4 banger? Should is stick with the vw flat 4 aircooled or swap to a suby ej22 or something similar?

Subies do provide more power than a stock vw flat four, it is debatable that they are more reliable though, They both have their "head issues" What to do really depends on your budget? I guessing that this is an economic decision, so I wont recommend a Raby's Aircooled Technologies engine
lots a Cali folks put ej22's in vanagons as its the only carb approved subie conversion
if you stick with a vw aircooled - DO NOT BUY A "GEX" MOTOR !!!!!

My 65 deluxe was geared really low. I had a 1176 with dual carbs in it. It would climb really steep and rough roads in the Sierra. The pan would just glide right over a lot of stuff.
Ya great traction. Pretty much posi drive and then engine right over drive wheels. Great in snow if you can keep the windows defrosted. If I had space I'd be looking for one as a project. Lost all my parts contacts. Bunch of old German doods. They've probably past by now. Mine was also a deluxe. 3 windows/side but one previous owner butchered it to put in roll up windows(70's style uggh). Replaced everything just needed body work. New rebuilt trani that I mistakenly put in upside down first go(from a beetle). Reduction gears gave me 5 gears in reverse and one forward. Ooops
I've been having problems bleeding my hydraulic clutch. I've done it about five times before, but can't get it right this time.
The summer has been busy, so no camping for another week or so. Then- Yellowstone here we come! We like to camp around Lake. Having cocktails at Lake Lodge and walking back late night from the lodge to the campground ~2mi is awesome.
But $%&#* clutch... no leaks, lines clean, return strong??? I don't get it.

saw this though! A genuine EV with soul! (For probably the same price as a Tesla) and way more POWER than the original 4cyl hampster wheel.
With my bay bus as a daily driver, I'm always looking out for 'The Wave' from other buses, and man, it seemed like a really rare occurrence this summer. I still saw plenty of Vanagons and bugs, but the only buses I saw belong to local business's, which doesn't really count. Are there still plenty on the road in your area?
There was one of these on the farm here in the early 80's left by a former renter some time in the mid to late 70's. We didn't have the title so we gave it away along with a rotting Alice Chalmers and other rusting random implements that were pretty much only scrap.Quote:

^^^ yep, she is pretty good little mechanic. Knows how to change oil, tires, check everything, etc. She hung out in the garage with me for years as I tinker.
Ive done time with a 68 and 70 bug. 68 caught on fire, I only paid $25 and a 12r so all good. Had to replace the cardboard floors about every week.
Left the car on the side of a dirt road outside KC when it dies on way to work. Years later cops show up at the house asking why my plates were involved in bank heist. I keep the plates when a get rid of a car now.

Yeah, About those fuel lines. I was on my way to Baker the last weekend of 2016. I pulled 'ol westy up onto my concrete pad to pack my things and noticed a drip drip underneath the engine bay. Turns out I had a hairline fracture on the inside of less than 2 inches of line between the fuel rail and the injector. Gas was dripping on a hot exhaust pipe. End of plans. Found out how really easy it is to go up in flames. Now I open the bay and watch the system at least once a year. And this is after a fairly recent engine replacement.

Skajah, I’d replace that fuel rail with these: http://www.van-cafe.com/shop/images/...317.billet.jpg and use the correct clamps that don’t bodge up the fuel line
http://www.jbugs.com/store/graphics/...LINE-CLAMP.jpg also get compatible fuel lines that match modern fuels! Ethanol and other additive eat up that old fuel line fast! (This is applicable to all older cars- they all can burn!)
