I wouldn't say everything in Summit/Eagle. There is plenty of snow up high and even low on north face shade aspects, but def some stuff rideable. I rode all the trails on Frisco peninsula today and it was pretty fun. Just some damp/snow in the trees, but no big deal.Quote:

Has there been an increase in rattlesnakes lately? I didn't see many at the beginning of the year and have consistently seen one for my last 4 rides. I saw three at marshal mesa/dowdy yesterday and one was massive and rattling super loudly. Iv'e been walking my dogs for years and never once worried about it but the second I started biking they're everywhere.

I'm starting to think the snakes should be more afraid of rudy than the other way around.
I’m no herpetologist, but it just dawned on me that with the bigger daily swings in temperature, these cold blooded, rodent plumped, rattley fuckers are spending more time in open places like trails during the day to maximize their sun exposure and warming - that’s why everybody is seeing more of them.
Also, wet springs are good for bugs and greenery and that’s good for rodents, which is good for snakes. Big snakes need more solar energy to warm up.

Valid points, but across 25 years of trail riding I hadn’t seen one till a couple years ago, and now I’ve seen a few. Something is changing.
🤷🏼♂️ I’ve been riding the front range on and off for 20 years, I have always seen snakes, especially in early and late rides when they are sunning

Any beta on Soapstone? Was hoping to get a good long xc ride in before winter closes in. I feel like I might have missed the window but figured I'd check before they shut it down come December.
Looking for a suggestion for a 1.5 - 2 hr SS ride near Loveland. Gonna run up and visit my daughter at UNC-Greeley this week and am bringing the bike, but I'm unfamiliar with the area. I've heard of Devil's Backbone, but no idea if there's a better alternative. Don't necessarily need flow, but I'm also old and don't want to suffer & push too much. Thx!
Park at the Blue Sky TH, I think it's actually in Ft. Collins but it's basically north Loveland. From there, ride south on Blue Sky into the Devil's Backbone trail system. I'd hit Indian Summer and ride it south-bound, go to the "top" of Devil's Backbone (where Blue Sky "ends"), turn around and then ride Indian Summer north-bound back to where you started. I believe it's around 15-16 miles and has plenty of punchy climbs and fun descents.Quote:

You might want to bring a fatty. They have at least a couple of inches on them.

I'm in Evergreen for the next 10 days or so. What are your favorite front range trails? Anyone wanna ride bikes? Rode Bergen Peak today, usually hit up the 3 sisters, planning to hit up centennial cone and maybe buffalo creek. Anything else I should add to the ride list?
Fairly fit and confident rider that can handle most blacks and double blacks though I am coming off a broken collarbone so a little more timid than normal and trying to ride more flow than chunk at the moment.
You should check out the trails at Floyd Hill- fun tech, but maybe a bit much for your collarbone? If you're looking for more mellow trails, I think you've got most of them. There's a new "downhill only" (I use that term loosely since there's a good amount of climbing included) bike trail at Lair of the Bear called Rutabega that could be fun for you too.
I'm up in north Boulder and could show you some fun techy stuff, but it's a pretty decent drive up my way from Evergreen.
Maybe Staunton - do it from Cub Creek for extra mileage (and extra gnar on the way back to the car). Wait to do Centennial and Buff once it cools off. Buff Crik is exposed and can be HOT in a lot of areas.Quote:
