What age did everyone start the little ones on the slopes? My little guy is 18 months old now, so a little young, but want to be able to get him up here in the next couple of years.
I have them walk around on the carpet with the skis. If they had the coordination for that, then skiing with an edgie wedgie. I tie a bunch of knots in the edgie wedgie to make the Pizza Shape almost forced. That leads into some short fun outings on the slope. They get tired fast. By 3 they are able to ski half a day and enjoy it. I retire the edgie wedgie as soon as they have the strength to make a good wedge without it. I left one in it to long, and it took months to break a few of his bad wedge habits and get him really carving. My boys could go for the whole day by 3, but my daughter just turned 4 gets worn down by half a day. (She could probably do the bunny hill all day, but I can't)
The reality of this was also that my wife and my personal sanity drove us to get them out their that young, but it worked on all 3 kids.
Good luck. It is pretty awesome to share something you built your life around with your kids.
My son was born in the summer. I took him out on the hill with me when he was 3.5 yo. Held him between my legs and would let him go on clear stretches and catch him again. Gently increased the slope. It was very cool to see him get the hang of it and progress. Pretty much the same with my daughter.
We have so much fun.
Just got skis for my 18 month little girl, going to try some flat land touring in March... she walks all over the house with ski poles in her hands now... next season we'll try her on a gentle slope.
This...start as earlier and as often and as long as you and they can take it....push them but make it fun...the faster they learn to get good the more they realize they are good and want to do it more...
I started this one at about 24 months....she just turned 8 in Dec and here she is winning the GS race at Breck last week

Watch what you say and watch what you do, kids will copy everything.
After skiing backwards all day taking vids/pics of her, Piper figured it was her turn.

Owen in the freestyle comp this weekend
There is video but I don't have it yet.
Thanks. We are super proud.
Sage this last weekend @ 2 years 10 months. As good as the last couple years have been it is about five thousand times better taking her skiing now that she is rockin the K2's instead of riding around in her blue sled. So much fun!

We've been finding it tough to get out as a family with a 3 year old and 1 year old. Then the backpack solution presented itself. We've even taken the little (He's actually ~30 lbs, so not so little) guy up the chair and I skied with him on my pack while my wife took held the reins of the 3 year old.
Touring with my 6yo and her Gramma yesterday.... She asked to go!!!!

3 months of bitter cold kept us from getting Anna out much during the heart of winter. However, we decided to close the season down proper. My wife took off with some friends and headed to California while I held down the fort at home.
Memorial Weekend 2013: Me, Anna and Van. This was Van's first day on the slopes.

I've said it before in this thread... I know that my kids won't remember the awesome things we did with them as babies and toddlers; but, the goal is for them to never remember a time when they weren't getting out and playing with their mom and dad.
good on you Dad!
nice work.
just got back from 3 days/nights of camping on the river with the little one, and she had a blast. Feeling pretty successful as a dad right now (sure to be dashed shortly ;)).
The pic with the three of you's (minus the front teeth) says it all... Great stoke!
Our little dude was so stoked for ski season a few weeks ago he set his own training area in the driveway.
It went down like this… He's hammering tent stakes into the ground. Me: "Hey dude what are you up to?" Little dude: "just setting up gates for training mommy, you want to come do them with me?" Me: "Give me a few, your sisters up from her nap and I will be right back outside" Little dude: "Okay mommy. DADDY, DADDY!! Come here and run gates with me!!"
I came out to both of them gate training, capturing it on video was in order:
^Awesome!
My wife and I took our 22 month old daughter out on the Copper Mtn bunny hill today for the first time, with no expectations for even getting her skis strapped on. After watching other kids and skiers for a bit, she not only asked to have the skis go on, but she started walking around on her own, and wanted to go down the hill, with us holding her hands and walking beside her. She then wanted to get on the magic carpet and to go back up for more. She did 8 laps in all and smiled a ton including when I let her slide faster. Wife and I are blown away.
Not an action shot ...just a shot of us having a great time doing what we love.
