Consider this thread revived! Thanks for the Costco and Seattle sourced Whisky suggestions. Gonna get me some the next time we get to stay 48 hrs across the border and can return with liquor without paying 100% duty on it. (Thanks Canada for your exorbitant duty and taxes on liquor!)

The crown royal northern harvest is decent, but it's a whole lot of hoopla about nothing, in my opinion. That chairman select, however, is the real deal. It's my favorite at the price point. Also look into forty Creek barrel select or copper pot reserve. Both are blended rye and very reasonably priced. Dunno about US availability though.
Wonder if the OP is old enough to legally buy brown liquor yet?

To the OP; optimal progression of the palate for distilled spirits are based on the complements to the food and lifestyle around each particular drink, the world over. This is my own notion, but I also believe it is the correct answer.
I'll not assume anything about you personally, but I will say if your palate at the moment cannot partake in whiskey, the progression might be a fun road wrought with lots and lots of BBQ, bitches and beer......FYI.
If one needs to learn to like whiskey they are not ready for it. A palate needs to age, just like the whiskey.

Buy CC dark horse, "high end" cheap Canadian whiskey but actually very good.
Forty creek is killer, funny that's it's from my home town, found it in really good bars across the us and Canada. Winery went whiskey and good product sealed the deal. Great boost to a town of 20k in bf no where southern onterrible

My go to is Monkey Shoulder, blend of 3 single malts, easy drinking on its own. Has some sweeter notes vs peat or smoke. Mixes well too.

The hype is a funny thing. It's frustrating when you don't get to try a whiskey that interests you, especially when you suspect that it's because of collector geeks.
FWIW, IMO the CR Northern Harvest rye is good, and a definite good buy at $26, but not worth the hype prices at all.
My holiday self-treat bottle this year is Masterson's Rye. That rum howler guy didn't seem to like it as much as the CR NH, but I think it's much, much better. I'm going to wait until noon.
Sniped a couple bottles of the Northern Harvest Rye,,, not bad for a $30 whiskey, But Nikko (sp) Japanese whiskeys are great as well especially if peat is not your thing. CC 100% rye is also a fine rye at at cheap price point

I love whiskey. Mostly protestant Irish on the shelf, but scotch and bourbon are always welcome. But for some reason, a single sip of Canadian rye will give me the worst hangover. Like the taste, but the after effect kills any favourable memory. FWIW the crown royal is too sweet for me; Wisers seemed more balanced for a production whiskey. So I guess I am lucky to miss the CR hype.

Knobb Creek Kentucky Straight Bourbon. Not very nice stuff. Harsh, varnish, high proof and blended from enough varieties to give a good hangover.
I tried to rescue a wee dram with some 7up and the lingering taste in my mouth, 2 hours later, is enough to put me off drinking Bourbon for the rest of my life.
Wife thinks there might be a way to use it for cooking or marinating.

Got a bottle of Jameson "Caskmates" the other day for my office whiskey club that is aged in stout barrels. Has a lot of chocolate notes on the nose, but just a hint as you drink it. Never thought they could make Jameson smoother, but they did with this.

Lots of people in the club drink really obscure stuff, and joke about the mainstream distillers, but amazingly this bottle is disappearing much faster than the others.
