My point is that we are not able to thwart major security breaches, so why are we concerned about x-raying shoes, and not allowing shampoo in carryons? It's the petty security measures that bother me most. X-raying checked baggage was long overdue and a good thing.

*clarification* The no gel/fluids rule was the dumbest one yet that has the greatest annoyance effect on the general public. Stick it in your pocket, walk through security, problem solved!

At least you can take lighters on board again. Why you could bring matches but not lighters was a complete mystery to me.

I'm not so sure about that. Some type of combinatory compound could create one hell of a problem on a plane. I won't say that the rule is effective, but I wouldn't say it's the dumbest idea.

Comeon, the implementation is completely fucking moronic like everything else the TSA does. They manage to leave loopholes large enough for any terrorist with a roomtemp IQ to walk through but still inconvenience people. The only thing they do is make people feel better :nonono2: If you need to feel better, spend the $5 each way on a beer before the plane instead of the $5 tax you pay for the pleasure of TSA incompetence.

Seconded. When the TSA figures out how to detect the camelback of gasoline and camelback of frozen OJ concentrate taped to my body under my sweatshirt, then I'll believe that this rule has done some good.

why do you think liquids are still banned? It's about the easiest thing to reckognize with the current baggage scanners. i.e. we aren't going to ban something that we have a hard time detecting.
And if we ban water bottles?, We can detect them everytime.
the general public will forget at least once if not more that there is a water bottle in their bag.
