@ Petey: things are improving gradually. This morning there was another 10 cm of dense, wettish snow, good for consolidation. Now a deep freeze cometh. Scouting reports indicate decent conditions for Twigfest in February and the river crossing is solid (as much as a frozen beaver dam can be solid).
I've only visted Pinery once and it seemed kinda flat, except for the dunes. No idea there was a ski hill there. Maybe it was on the same scale as the Drumlin at the U of Guelph, which actually had a rope tow. I taught a friend to ski there and he went on to become a longtime heli ski guide for CMH. Who'd a thunk it?
Glen Eden was okay Saturday morning in the rain. Kids weren't impressed but I told them it builds character. They still weren't impressed. Eventually the rain turned to snow as the temperatures dropped. First time in my life I've ever seen it raining at the bottom of GE and snowing at the top. What a difference 200' makes!
Everything is open and coverage is great. Finally a real winter.
Hey Mr. Multi, Might try and make it to Twigfest on Saturday. Any chance of setting up a tent and camping on location? Arrowhead is booked and Mew Lake is a bit of a drive. Just pondering at this point and haven't seen any latest info on email. I'll bounce this off Jeff in a day or two if I don't hear anything. Thanks! Looking like some rain next Sunday in these parts. Another 'interesting' winter in Southern Ontario. Still, a few powder days this season. That would be two or three inches. :)
Well, it is is crown land out out there, so camping is certainly an option. You'll want to get in there early on Friday, park at the intersection of Forestry Tower Road and Graphite Mine Road. Sleep in the vehicle or ski in a ways to camp. Once you ski across the river, there are options in the bush, or go up to the old campsite. Met up with my dad for some laps today. Busy at the old Glen Eden today at lunchtime, wonder what's up with that. Good to see, though - place needs some financial influx.
Snow was excellent and the public were able to generally get 3 people on the 4 person lifts, so that is an improvement.
There was a Petey sighting at Twigfest! Can't post pictures but what a fun but frigid day.
petey_ indeed. Was still plucking ice out of my hair and beard when I got to Hwy. 11. Blooming cold and huffing like an out of shape old 70 year old. Thought I might be getting out with a bunch of laid back granola munchers when I got there. Wrong! Hard chargers and many split boarders as well as young and fit younguns. Didn't bring out the wide skis and my boots were locked in walk mode. Excuses, excuses. Beautiful spot and wondered what the nearby lakes held under the ice. Specks? Anywho, need to get in better shape for next year. Deep snow but sticks and rocks were lurking. Poor Tina got stuck herding me up and down but it sounds like she gets her moments in other locations. Great trip! Also wanted to get the name and model of the tent you set up. Seems like it is about time to get a hot tent and the size of that one was good for a family and friends meeting place.
Ha ha, definitely some specs under the ice out there. Glad you enjoyed the day despite the sandbag. The tent is is a cheapo from Vevor (3 m bell tent), stove was Jeff's, he got got from a little old man in Burk's Falls.

That tent is the 5m correct? Going to try and get the 4. If my wife gives me grief then I'll blame you. Otherwise, I'm golden:) It was nice to get back into my element on a small groomed hill after that trip but the best memories don't come from an easy time. Hoping the corn fest trip happens when I don't have any plans. Telemark day happens when I have two birthdays to attend. A friend's seventieth and a sister in law's 75th. Always something.
^^^ The tent we had was the 4 m version, that's 13+ feet, so a pretty good size.

This is from Valentine's Day. There is at least 20 cm more now, and it is still snowing. Went for a slowshoe yesterday and measured a 67 cm snowpack in the woods behind my house. Get out there:

4 or 5 inches of fresh on the hill Sunday morning was very much like peanut butter. Easy on the knees but a wee bit slow. Much nicer yesterday with a round of grooming. Several mornings of un-groomed this season were fantastic but Sunday wasn't one of them. Always something:) Careful you don't lose your dog out there Mr. M.

I'm supposed to load an app to post a pic? Yah, no. Use your imagination. Getting into the warm part of winter again. Sun came out this morning and the snow got sticky after a soft spell. Lifts were mostly empty which was nice after the racer kids and wee grommets took over yesterday. Looks like rain on the way but this is after all southern Ontario. Fingers crossed we're still sliding at Easter.
