Fall 24/25 Days Afield Thread

Fucking tough season. Only been out 4 days though. A week ago in the rain they were screaming and we called a decent bull into 45 yards but he busted us.

Past two days we camped and hunted a range a few hours from home. Good country. Tons of sign (from the wet weather last week). Plenty of water, but too damn hot. Near 80 at 8000 feet. We hiked a bunch of miles and found some cooler dark north facing timber and still nothing....besides wolf shit and hearing wolves. Found 4 beds yesterday AM but everything else was at least a week old. Fuck.

Schwacked a meat buck on deer opener.

Craaazy day complete with out of state goons following us up a ridge line for three miles, a beauty 180 buck that wouldn’t take a step forward to expose his vitals for 45 minutes (finally just bedded down), spotting a mondo bull that we’ll chase later in the week, then this guy who was 1 mile from the truck on the way out after doing 10 and 3500 vertical. And it was -60 degrees.


Legs = sore.

Grouse numbers are finally starting to come. Got a nice picture of this guy after cutting a good load of wood.

Finally first blood up here from my hunting buddies muley doe. helped him haul it out yesterday. 1 mile drag.
Have yet to be scared by a bird. Usually I would have had a dozen heart attacks by now. My tags all wide open still. Went and sighted all the rifles in today. Feeling good for November. Still a couple weeks of bow looking for my buck

We had a good morning…spotted some deer up high and for once everything actually went as planned (sort of). Bro in law (non mag so I blacked him out) shot a nice buck and I was able to harvest the one next to him. They fell 10 yards from each other so we boned them out and carried them out in one trip. Consequentially, my everything hurts.

Both my deer tags are punched and elk season has started, with a cold front on the way!

Awesome. Buddy of mine took a 2x2 elk tonight. Stoked for him!

Damn, those are some nice bucks. Makes me miss cooking up some fresh back strap steaks.

Nice work Rev!! Hard to find those buggers with the heat this year!

I thought my hunting season was fucked this year after a crash 5 weeks ago at NICA practice with kiddo:

Luckily my doctor is a hunter and gave me the thumbs as long as I didn't pack much out, and made sure I had the gun firmly in my shoulder before I shot. Long story short, I found a herd two days before the opener while trying to find a deer for my friends daughter. I went in the night before to the same spot and set up camp so I locked up the draw. Walked in a mile or so and 12 minutes after shooting hours a cow walked into an opening right above me. She was a little farther than I hoped, but I couldn't pass it up! I had clear shot and an easy shooting position; one shot at 325 yards and she crumpled. Gotta love a 300 win mag for punching power.

Lastly, get your self 5'2" of hiking power to hike out both hind quarters for you if your partially broken!! All my hunting buddies didn't answer my call for help, so it was just up to the two of us!

sloooooooow start to ducks here in UT. scratching out singles walking the river and reservoirs arent really holding right now.

Getting jacked up for my CO rifle tag this month.

Kuiu is definitely where its at. But man the exchange rate is good for buying that great even on sale currently.
One buddy popped his muley buck tag and his cow elk tag this week. My self and another buddy got on a half dozen elk but didn't move aggressively enough to get a shot.
Also it's been so damn nice up north here in Alberta, I think most of the ducks and migratory birds are still north of the border.
I have yet to see a grouse in my local but sounds like a few in the foot hills.. right opener for me tomorrow and plenty of November days off.

Sometimes they don't give you much of a choice.

^^Nice freezer buck WRG. I have yet to see any rutty behavior.

Shooting light about 45 minutes ago. The weapons restricted areas around my house sounded like Gaza for a little bit. Too many whitetails around here anyway.

Blacktails up here...that would be a trophy buck.

Then again, an Alaska State Trooper hit & killed a mule deer on the Parks Hwy south of Fairbanks a couple years ago. This from ADF&G Hunting regs, so not fiction.

I should really start hunting grouse. I could have killed at least ten in the past week.

Rifle opener yesterday.. My buddy finally broke his buck curse. Got a nice wt buck at 50 yards spot and stalk with the 7mm rem mag. Stoked for him.
Went out today with a buddy at first light. Got a supplement wt antlerless tags filled.
