Anybody have any idea if Czar's/Salomon's skis run long/short or about average with other skis? or the running length of the 174's?
Did a search and couldn't come up with anything.
Thanks.

They definitely run short. How much? I don't know. I also pulled the trigger on the cheap evo Czar's but they only had 174/166. They are super fun for quick jump turns down narrow chutes, moguls, and trees. I'm really impressed. Its been awhile since new skis made me feel like that much of a better skier. I already have big pow skis and long groomer skis, so 174's are working ok.
I'm currently lining up a deal on some 09' 182s and just a bit worried about lenght
im 5'8 140lbs, a racer, and i will be using them purely on the deep days.
i had some 180 moment rubys last year and felt like i was overpowering them when out of the trees.. i wanted something more powder oriented that i could power through gs turns but also butter arround in the fluff a bit.
is the 182 czar ok?
If Cody can ski them, so can you.... just not as fast;)
I think you should be okay. I tried the 190s (5'8" 175 lbs. race background) and I thought the ski would be better at what it is in 182. The long radius makes it really comfortable in the longer radius yet the shorter length would likely make it playful. I was wishing the 190s were a little shorter for everything other than gs-ing in open space. They felt longer and less playful than my 188 S7s for reference. I think the 182s would be money in this ski.
I'm bigger than you with I guess a similar ski style (aggressive ex-racer and all that shit) and was worried about the same thing when I bought mine last fall. I got a really sick deal through Salomon and the 190s were already all bought up by the time I was ready to buy so I had to get the 182s. I actually made a thread about it if you wanna search.
Anyway, I mounted the 182s with a pair of Dukes and they ended up working out great in literally all conditions I encountered last season, the vast majority in Aspen with a handful days in Silverton and Vail/Beav Creek. I'm a bit bigger than you (6' 165ish) and I had no issues with float in deep snow. Like others have said, Cody Townsend is like 6'3 or something and skied the 182s so for the rest of us it shouldn't be an issue.
I also recommend mounting on the progressive (more forward) line, the extra length in the tail will improve stability when charging hard in any conditions and the tip rocker still will allow you to float in the pow.
Interesting you recommend that for the 182s. I tried them on the forward line on the 190s and they were actually unskiable, borderline terrifying. Picture grippy, solid tails with nothing in front of the bindings, a really bizarre feeling. They did feel a bit better in soft snow but still weird. Mounting on the back line made them much more versatile and easy to control without giving up a whole lot of newschoolness, I found. But it could be different with the 182s since they're generally easier to throw around and the imbalance may not be quite as severe.
I skied the the "new" 190 (10/11) in Stryn, Norway early june in perfect spring/summer snow... Compared to my Lotus 120 from 07/08 they were a bit heavy and slow between turns, but i really appreciated the solid and trustworthy feel. I knew that if I wanted to haul some ass, the skis would be up for it... I haven't skied the 182 thought so I can't really comment on the agility, it might just depend on me being increadibly spoilt with my light DPS... Overall a very good ski that I def. could see myself buying if I wasn't into the whole DPS thingie. I'm 174cm, 75kg (you do the converting...), very strong with good technique..
Mounting on the forward line with the 182s is pretty much consensus among the Salomon team (I was told Abma even goes a few cm in front of the forward line) so after a lot of going back and forth I went that route and I loved them there. They shined the most when I was charging hard in choppy conditions - think early afternoon after a 14" dump. Just absolutely killed in those conditions.
I think the 190s are just a completely different beast so I won't even try to comment on those but I do remember reading somewhere (maybe on this very forum) that the sweet spot on the 190 is between the two lines. I do think you're right about the 182s being more playful and easier to throw around, plus with the 190's extra 8cm of length you shouldn't need the extra tail stability like you do with the 182.
Thanks! Ive got the skis on their way but they are mounted on the center line and already at my boot size......
ok another question:
I half commited to buying from this one guy: 2008 slightly used czars with sth 16 mounted for me for 450$
but then this came up: brand new 2009 czars for 350$ no bindings but ive got some decent ones here.
i would have to pay for mounting and stuff.
what should i do?
Well, a 100$ aint bad for an already mounted to your size STH 16..
But that's me..
