I could listen to Django all day. And do sometimes.
Since jazz is mostly all I play I'll second Joe Pass and Wes Montgomery.
Another guy who does amazing gypsy swing is Jimmy Rosenberg.
Buddy Guy as well.

Got to see him open for Bonnie Raitt years ago. Amazing.
RIP

This thread contains many greats; it should include Rory Gallagher
I cannot believe nobody has mentioned Steve Morse. He is known by many guitar players, but the general public has no idea how absolutely amazing and versatile he is.
not sure if I saw his name among many noteworthy ones listed in this thread, but I'll add Joey Santiago, and while I'm at it, Alejandro Escoveda.
GE Smith
Norman Blake
Not so much underrated, but forgotten or not mentioned yet as some of the greats
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Mark Knopfler (already mentioned)
Tom Morello (mentioned)
Jesse Cook- World music, Classical guitar
Here's a video with his song "Virtue" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eM0aetImKXY
Not sure how well he fits in this category, but a big RIP goes out to Jeff Healey. Best blind, lap-style guitar player I ever had the pleasure of hearing perform.
And, since I'm here, I'll put Bruce Cockburn's name out there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OW53fiwyskA&NR=1 I can only say, "HOLY SHIT!!!
Henry Garza from Los Lonely Boys is actually really fucking good.
THE guitar player's guitar player;
James Burton
Clarence Gatemouth Brown
Willie Nelson a legend with his own style. Oh, EC is pretty good , but he gets plenty of deserved credit:
Strunz and Farah- check out the 2:23 minute mark in this clip unreal!!!
Albert Lee
Yes he is.... ;)
What say ye to my Son Volt e-mail?
Ritchie Blackmore
Just thought of another underated guitar player, as I sit here and listen to "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac.
Lindsay Buckingham
Missed this one, totally agree.
nanuq, you're freaking me out. A vote for Hotel California as best song ever, okay, whatever. NOT.
A vote for Prince for underrated guitarists? I actually agree.
Votes for Peter Frampton and Glenn Campbell as best underrated guitarists? Um, sorry, no.
Now Lindsay Buckingham. Doesn't suck. But any "best" list can't have him on it. Just the way it is.
I got to hang out for a few hours with Pinetop Perkins, blues piano player, he played with EVERYBODY from the 40's on, name one decent player who could play a blues riff, I mean, Clapton, Stevie Ray, Robert Cray, Rory Gallagher, Roy Buchanon, Buddy Guy, Albert King, B.B. King, and on, and on, he played with them all.
I asked him who was the best he played with and without a second's hesitation he said "Duane Allman."
Of course Duane's not underrated but damn that boy could play.
No no, never said Hotel California was best song ever, just said it deserved a spot on the top 100 list - but no, it isn;t the best song ever. It is one of the better rock songs though.
Peter Frampton was a very influential guitar palyer and he did bring a new style into the guitar world. And his studio musician work as a guitarist makes him a candidate for underated. The guy is good. Damn good.
Same with Glen Campbell. Don't look at his pop/country crap. That is just fluffed up shit, but his studio work, and his writing makes him an underated guitarist.
Lindsay Buckingham, same thing. The dude has skills. Mad skills. Look at some of his recent solo work - avant garde, and very layered and complex. Again, underated guitarist.
I agree with you on the Roy Buchanon. You ever here his version of "Can I Change My Mind?"? Holy shit that is smoking. Just very precise, and "behind the notes" playing.
And Robert Cray - this man could teach a lot of young 'uns a thing or two. Shit, he could teach Clapton more than a single thing or two. Robert Cray has got it going on for sure.
Another shout out for my hometown brutha', Prince.
Rarely gets props on this topic.
Gotta say R.I.P to Jeff Healy.
Gotta add Kelly Joe Phelps, Monte Montgomery, and Derek Trucks to this! Also the guitarist from Greyboy Allstars! Amazing!
