Hi Brad,
Thanks for the great info.
& for improving the tgr signal to noise ratio.
It's the winter that just keeps giving :)
wasatch mags... teton skier looking for partners. Jonesing for anything from mellow pow to high ski mountaineering, definitely more stoked on the ski mountaineering side (have decent bit of trad/ice experience, and gear as well). Have a month or so, so I'd be up for any far flung missions as well.
South aspects up high skied well this morning with the little refreshment we had last night. Some wind and a few clouds kept sunny aspects from getting baked right away.http://i791.photobucket.com/albums/y.../liamedit2.jpg
Hey,
Previous Salt Lake City resident (current living in Switzerland) coming to SLC tomorrow for 2 weeks. Already contacted one mag here about hooking up. If anyone else is willing to share some turns please shoot me a PM. I splitboard and have also become interested in those more comitting lines that require some mountaineering as well. :)
Temps stayed cool above 9,000ft today. Lots of pockets ripping out on east and west aspects, some big, some small. Most 6-12" deep, not enough for burial, but enough to take you for a ride.

Mark H got this west facing ramp to rip out with a ski cut.

Nohow pulled out a small pocket skinning on a NE aspect.

Due north had no activity.

Snow was still fun at 2pm on north/high aspects.

I guess this one came down sometime recently. Massive, to the ground.

Looks like the shadow of a beater-hatchet. Good thing your packin', Jim.
It looks like the beater-hatchet has a feather on it? ..I'm sure it's only a ceremonial beater-hatchet, and not intended for actual beatering or hatcheting.
Thinking of taking a few visitors out winter camping tomorrow night.
Is overnight parking allowed at Spruces?
If not, any ideas?

A very rare line, Upwop Peak NE face.. Sketchy entrance, super steep, and rarely filled in. Sloughed heavy, very very fun run.
Skied 4-22, cold winter conditions...
I know, this is my 2nd request for touring partners in the wasatch, but anyways:
Anyone going out tomorrow or anytime this week for that matter? I just arrived in Salt Lake City for 2 weeks (previous 9 year resident of SLC) from Switzerland (from the worst winter they've had in 60 years) and would love to get back into some Utah snow. I only entered the touring game in europe, so I am looking for touring partners here in Utah. I'm free to go out pretty much everyday this next week. This is my second year touring (first on a splitboard), but I have been riding for 11 years now and have done some pretty big lines this year in europe (cosmique couloir in Chamonix and just last weekend the eiger west face), so I am down for anything from just mellow powder to more committing lines. If anyone is willing to let me come along with them just send me an email. Orash111@yahoo.com
I'd be more than happy to return the favor if any of you ever decide to come for a trip to europe.
jim, how many times have you done hod this year?
LOL! I just wanted a rebate on that thing cause it was solid ice the last time I did it. This time it had a weird spur which again made the cool part of the chute unskiable. Nevertheless it was 5 star side stepping in a dark trench. Then the remainder of the chute avalanched before I could get it. Just another classic chute skiing experience :)
Lots of very deep graupel pooling up to 1+ft deep on south aspects this morning. Then maybe 4-6" of mixed graupel/snow at mid elevations.
Pretty heavy greenhouse effect around 11am.

http://i795.photobucket.com/albums/y...o/IMAG0475.jpg
East aspects had about 4-6" of new snow mixed with graupel.
http://i795.photobucket.com/albums/y...o/IMAG0477.jpg
West aspects, for whatever reason, had much deeper snow/graupel that was pretty enjoyable.

Fun little side couloir.

Started snowing again on the exit around noon. Wonder what conditions will be like if we get wind + 1-2ft of snow?
I was wondering that, too.. It'll prolly be at least in the 'tits' category though, eh? Today was just what I needed, soothed the soul so well after a involuntary two-week hiatus. You can thank Orash, for sending those bursts of sun through the canopy

Mid elevation BCC this morning was amazing graupel skiing with free refills. Super fast hero snow in an empty canyon.
Tomorrow is going to be one to remember if the sun comes out.
just over the wire, Alta is now closed to uphill travel for those that care
200" base. Nearly 700" for the year, and what a year. Whew...
They have 50 mph gusts...avys.
They are not worried about the savy skiers, it's the other boneheads that they don't want to go looking for or have to dig out. I don't blame them.
Yeah I dont blame them at all. I mean they are still "open" even if lifts arent spinning but they arent doing control...so...
I wasnt aware of the high winds...should smooth everything out nice at the bird tomorrow...oh well..so much for a after work hike up alta...guess i could hit white pine...i think ill just wait.
UDOT will be conducting avalanche control tomorrow, Wednesday the 27th of April, in Both Little and Big Cottonwood Canyons.
Please stay clear of all North side avalanche paths in upper Little Cottonwood Canyon between 0600 and 0830.
Please stay clear of upper Broads Fork and Stairs gulch until after 1200.
Today’s results: Tanners naturaled, big pile of wet snow observed in the runout. White Pine ran to behind the China Wall, Little Pine and Limber Pine into the aprons. Ten Springs to the road.
-Thanks, Brad
Went up LCC after work (6pm) and skinned up Flag, no other tracks up there noted to peak, then made my way a bit further east and then skied an epic south aspect line to the road. TWAS $$$
Hasty pit had hard surface under 24" of Fresh mingled with windblown snow that seemed to sit well on the old surface and did not present fractures or propagations tonight. Watch out for warming - GET SOME FOR ME IN THE SUN Y'all tomorrow, be careful.
For what is it about the third time in six years we have 700" in LCC. For everyone that has been doing the snow dance this winter I say thanks.
I have no idea if this means that Global Warming is BS or if it means we are getting copious amounts of snow due to Global Warning, but honestly I don't give a f--k. The last six weeks have been so good, Flag / Mill South today, party at Alta this weekend.
Take a look at the NOAA forecast for Friday/Saturday AM... looks like 'Bird is about to go off again
more importantly, they are worried about their own employees who are on the hill working - especially during low vis kind of days like yesterday. high boy ran to the very bottom traverse upon ski cut. patsy marley ran about 800-1000' wide starting at its lowest north bench to up past the movie screen. it ran to just past the summer road taking with it trees and rocks. seriously hope this was a natural and nobody is buried in it somewhere. the debri at the bottom of tanner's is more than impressive.
was out last night about the same time as spread eagle and found similar snow structure on north facing slopes. to only expound in detail, found a couple of interspersed layers of graupel (from mini bursts) with slightly heavier snow (most likely from the wind) that is all sitting on a few inches of lower density snow from the beginning of the event that I'm confident is what everything is running on.
sorry, meant to post this last night for those interested on what to look out for today, but never got around to it. hope everyone stays safe out there today. also, alta is open to uphill travel today for those that care.
High Boy to the lower traverse is one hell of a long way, good thing they have it shut down.
i bet my UDOT comrades would be more than happy to know your real name and phone number to have a nice conversation over milk and cookies with you v
Nobody out this morning.

Not sure if this is natural, or from UDOT bombing. West to SW facing, leading into Toledo Bowl.
http://i795.photobucket.com/albums/y...o/DSCF4558.jpg
NW facing skied well with no apparent instabilities.

Some folks successfully skied south aspects around 10am or so. But the folks skiing SW aspects had a close call.

Walking along on the ridge, then leaned over to look at the south face, that's when it ripped out.

The last two days skiing had plenty of graupel. Today on north aspects it compressed down to about 4-6" of medium sized graupel, then right side up new snow of about 10-12" deep. I wonder what will happen on north aspects if we get some more water weight on it?
