Thanks for the advice Meathelmet. Alanga seemed kind of high elevation... we heard it was like a little La Grave in Italy. It seems like it might be getting dumped on over there, up high (2000m) is there still no base?
Cervinia is kind of flat and boring IMO, for off piste that is... snow doesn't help make the terrain more interesting and I heard if you waunder of piste they sometimes send out the police to arrest you (?). I had a season pass including there last year, from Zermatt, but we hardly ever went.
news from ALL aosta valley says NO relevant snow there.. no more than few cm :frown: the big dump is now in liguria (some small neglected spots like pratonevoso and cuneo alps might be like  H E A V E N by sunday.... ) lombardy (45 cm in milan, linate airport closed) and all the spots in valtellina (Bormio, livigno etc) ticino (bosco gurin, sanbernardino....), probably graubunden, and many scattered selected spots in dolomitiQuote:

Thanks for the Italian update. Maybe we'll give it a miss then.

Here is the deal from yesterday/Thursday:
I woke to the snowplow going by and a minute later Batman called me.
The Batmobile was unavailable (CatWoman had it), so we met up and did homecourt/Leysin.
Off piste was 8"/20cm of dust on crust.
The off piste was pretty solid, and the snow light.
On piste proved to be a delight.
We ripped on piste all day, going for speed and non stop decents.
Running on 5 hours of sleep 2 nights in a row, plus a full day of skiing,
I took today off.
Wind blowing hard at moment; Barometer rising.
Hey Team,
what about the weather currently ripping across France!looks like things are going to fill in even if its just windblown.anyhow anybody out there riding in Espace Killy?Let me know.keen to catch up with you for a hoot.
Skied Megeve Saturday. Very impressive! TR here:

:nonono2: Nothing EXTREME. Lots of long red and blue pistes w/ plenty of elbow room.
Excellent snow quality on-piste. Off-p was skied out, too little depth, and/or wind-affected.
On a pow day (mid-week) it has beaucoup potential and,
maybe, ...little competition for some great lines.
a bit of marmolada yesterday:

cham/ northern switzerland seems to be the bet right now.but lets wait until sat/sunday before the position of the low is clearer.
YES PLEASE.
Did a little ice climb on the Tacul today and then skiied the Vallee Blanche to get down today... never seen such horrible conditions. 50cm high satstrugi formations - booked it back onto the tourist route and once there, the only time of my life I was thinking "thank god for moguls" as you can actually TURN on them properly.
Down lower things are pretty bleak... The warm foen wind that howled through the valley really has removed most of the snow that managed to fall up until now this season on a lot of slopes... Midi midstation is nearly all rocks again, Pas de Chevre is looking very rocky, up at the Midi there's bare blue glacial ice showing where there used to be nice powderly slopes. We had a look at the Glaciar Rond exit couloir and it looks like a summer rock climb. Flegere still looks decent although not been up there in person lately. Grands Montets has yet to really fill in...
Jeeeeeesus, we need snow.
Looking at all the responses here, I cannot believe how lucky my Euro timing was this season ...
Fersure dude.Quote:

High altitude ice climbs are all in great condition however, so can't complain too much. Led my second fairly serious multipitch route today.
Hey guys new to this forum. The weather in Italy is warm to say the least.
I am now back in Brescia, pondering my next trip. I have two more weeks.
I was planning on going to Alagna but from what i have read of the other posts, there is no snow.
I wanted to go to higher elevations, for better snow.
Anyone have any ideas on where there is snow, or where the skiing is good?
I'm here from Colorado, and was hoping on something similiar, but we are having a banner year in CO.
I can't drink much more grappa

Good Skiing: You have "East Coast skiing" throughout Western CH & Haute Savoie right now. Pistes icy in AM and soft afternoon. Boilerplate on reds/blacks. Bump skiing. Some people out in T-shirts at 1800m. Off-p = core shots-a-plenty.
Higher Elev: If you are dead set on using your skis over here I would head to Cervina/Zermatt. Mostly flat terrain on glaciers...almost touring style, but you will find some classic descents (i.e. Klein Matterhorn) and $$$ views on the glaciers. Suggestion: ski from Italy-side and spend a night in Zermatt. 2 hostels in Z to save u some bills.
Over the Horizon: 4 - 6 days out there is a prediction of snowfall arriving in the Austrian "panhandle". But, I have no local knowledge of the area, ...and these long-range 4-kasts are not reliable.
Otherwise, i reco putting the skis away and heading down to Toscany (Florence, Sienna, Volterra) and Umbria.
Great countryside, no one around right now, great food and wine, architecture, museums, ruins, etc.
Soak up Italy ...since the snow is melting.
