Thanks for the input fellas. Terrain is mixed with more days in trees/smaller features but the odd day on bigger faces when conditions warrant. That's one of the things I don't like about the Deathwishes - they seem to fold/want to turn a little more than I'd like in open terrain, but they're more center mounted, less soft snow oriented and probably softer than the Steeples, so this likely isn't a concern with either length Steeple.
X - how tall/heavy are you? I was impressed with the mini BG performance as well, but don't know how that will translate to the Steeple with the lighter layup. It's probably fine and the 184 is probably the better choice from a touring utility standpoint. Who woulda thunk that 5 fucking cms could lead to so much consternation?! Now leaning towards 184 unless anyone thinks this is a giant mistake.

How does the stiffness compare between generations of Steeples? I have the 189cm 102, and I almost always wish they were stiffer... too soft and too much rocker for the width, which doesn't float that well and also doesn't have as much edge as I'd like for volcano firm... though they rule in ripe corn or a couple inches of fresh. I'm glad for the length only on the down, while the tails annoy me on the climb. Heavy for their class, but that's bamboo. I found them on some web closeout, but if I could have a second chance I'd ask for another layer of carbon from the factory in a 180 something.

I haven't skied the new ones, however. If they are stiffer or handle speed better, I'd advise 184. If the handling is nearly the same, I'd stay long. ON3P?

I'm 6'2", 180 in shorts, boots are Vulcans, clamps are Rad/Speed hybrid.

What a cunt. There was no "major" scratch on them. I hit a rock, it happens in 3 days on powder. but they were still fresh, with no marks on them, thats why i said mint. Maybe i missed a scratch, it couldn't have been large. You probably did it yourself, or it happend in shipping, and you are just retarded. I just got last season's BG 184s. I have zero complaints. Now if the pair I found were 186s I'm sure I would have like those too. But if given the choice between these and 189 I'd still take these. I'm 5'11 and 185lbs.

Seconded. I also got new 184 BG's this season and have zero complaints whatsoever. I'm 6' 185lbs, former Ski Patroller. I don't see a need to measure my dick against anyone else's, so I say go with what YOU think is best for YOU...

The 184's are surprisingly quick and nimble. They even managed to hold their own on a very icy day at Kirkwood and another day skiing in the rain at Kirkwood. Rode them yesterday at Heavenly, which was pretty skied out. They were lots of fun, manageable and stable. Had a great day.

The Steeple 108 is stiffer than the old 102, but not as stiff as a BG. It falls in the middle area for sure. The extra material for the width and the changes in the taper from the 102 make it a better all mountain ski, but it is still on the softer side for us (medium flex for most companies).

FWIW I second the same thoughts as many here with the length. I have a new pair of steeples that I will be touring on soon and went with the 184...if I was going to put alpine bindings and ski them inbounds I would have went 189.

The 184 is very stable but just a tad bit quicker in tight spots. Remember all the 184's are basically our old 186 with the tail modified (i.e. Same running length and stability, little less in the rear to get hung up).

I'm 5'10" and 195lbs.

Hope that helps and now back to the kick in the nutts that is known as SIA.

Well, it's hard to say because you're a few inches taller and 20# heavier. I found they float fine at speed, but I have to lean back a tad when the terrain flattens out. Personally, I ride inbounds on big pow days and tour when the resort is tracked out midwinter, and the Zero G 108 is the best I've found for a do-it-all, one-ski-quiver kind of ski that includes midwinter touring and isn't a huge pain on volcanos. It's what I wish I had most of the days I was touring in the PNW instead of my Lhasa Fats and DPS Wailer 95 combo. But you dragged the OG C&D around for years, so maybe we have different priorities. If you like to huck into pow while touring, you might prefer to have BGs + F12s on deeper days. When I move back to WA, I'll probably consider getting pow-touring ski, but like I said, the Zero G 108 is the best overall, "If I could only have one" touring ski I've ever skied.

I love ON3P, but there is a limit to the miracles they can work. Their touring line just isn't my cup of tea: the shape is too soft-snow oriented for the width. Plus, they have done such a great job with their standard layup, I think it would be really tough for them to switch gears and produce a full carbon layup.

Same page, buddy. Stock layup is on the fuckin money for pow skis, but I'd like to see them experiment with the touring line before I buy another. In addition to the shape/width pairing being a little off, which we both mentioned, I think the bamboo is too dense a core material to be used as full-thickness per their normal construction, even with the tour layup. Something lighter needs to take a more prominent role in the structure of the ski, but I don't think more carbon is the answer (and would fuck with the smooth, poppy power feel that ON3P does so well). Maybe a hybrid core, bamboo/paulownia or something, with not too much glass and top/bottom carbon strips.

I agree with avugeek, ZG108 is a great soft snow / winter touring ski if you are not hunting for pow. For breaking trail and making pow laps I'd pick something else. I likewise, stick to the lifts when there is pow. 25,000ft instead of 2,500 sort of thing.
