Seems like as good a place as any to ask this tangentially bike-related question:

Does anyone have preferred methods and materials for repairing a roof bin?

I have this https://yakima.com/products/rocketbox-white-curbside and last spring when loaded with a softball pitching machine I did not fully latch the back latch and it blew open on the freeway. With each gust of wind a crack at the back corner on the hinge side grew a little - it is now about 5" long, running along the corner of the bin.

Would like to keep the white whale operational, and would likely move it from my wife's car to mine so the repair doesn't have to be pretty...

Which pads do people like best for Hayes Dominions? I blew through the stock semi-metallic pads surprisingly quickly (pads usually last me a while so was kinda surprised there). I liked the feel and modulation so would consider getting another set but wondering if there're any alternatives that work just as well and maybe a bit cheaper

I'm running the metallic pads that came with mine, and seem to be holding up well. (They come with the semi-metallic / organic ones installed.) The metallic ones are a little bit noisier than the organic pads I had in all my recent previous brakes though.

I just put those in since my semi metallic ones were worn to the point where they would start damaging the rotors so I'll see how I like them, but always prefer semi-metallic/organic over metallic unless it's full on bike park season. I know swapping between the two isn't ideal for the rotors but it was between that or riding with zero pad left in the rear so felt like the lesser of two evils

I like the MTX golds which seem to be a ceramic MADE WITH OTHER STUFF FROM JAPAN if you believe their ad copy. I have had good experience with the hayes metallics as well.

In a pinch I put in a set of the aqua-blue Miles semi-mets on the rear got about 75k descending out of them.

The Hayes organic pads barely made it 200 miles on my Dominions and they were gone. As in, you could barely see any pad material left. I couldn't believe how soft they were. I didn't like the feel of the metallic ones and they wailed like banshees. I went with the trustee MTX pads, red in the front for added sensitivity and gold in the rear so I can lock the back wheel by just thinking of tapping he lever. 500 miles later they're barely showing any sign of wear and the brakes work so well I bought another set to put on my other bike.
If anyone wants metallic Hayes pad I'm happy to put 2 sets in the mail for the price of postage.

Going back to my notes - looks like I am about 150k feet on the MTX golds and nearing replacement, but my notes are not so great.

Huh. I put a new set on at the start of this season and just replaced them yesterday. Could have squeaked a few more rides out of them even and you know what I've been up to all summer.

Yeah I had essentially the same experience (maybe more than 200 miles but only a few months, two of which I was off the bike with an injury). It felt odd since I’ve never been one to smoke brake pads. I rode with the Hayes metallic today and didn’t have any noise issues but I’d like a little more quick bite to lock up the rear wheel when I want to. I’ll check our MTX

i shit the bit and bought a mullet to replace 165. my 27.5 wheels im now left with are custom i9 305 alloy enduro with hydra hubs. of course now i need a 29 wheel. is there value in trying to have someone who isnt me take the hubs from current set and make them into a set of nice mullet , maybe with some value carbon rim? or is that a fools errand, seems like at least a couple of solid wheel builders within hour of seattle if not closer

If you like the hubs, then sure? You can pick up Chinese carbon rims (Light Bicycles or BTLOS) for around $200 each, spokes and nipples for $100, wheel building should be around $100 each - so that's a carbon wheelset for under $700.

Sadly with i9’s spokes this would be a very expensive proposition. I'm less than certain if you could use a different spoke with the version of the hub you have.

I think it'd be worth it to relace the front to a 29 i9 rim with their fancypants spokes. The takeoff rim you can use as a spare or sell for someone else's spare. I'm sure it'll cost a bit, but you'll at least save the cost of the hub (~200?). It can't be that much worse than a break even compared to having like a DT 350 / 511 wheel built up.

I would wait. In a year or two bike manufacturers are likely to release long forked reverse mullet designs that are far superior to the designs of today and you can sell that wheel at a mint.

I have a Shimano 8120 crankset with a 34T chainring. The chainring says "12 speed" on it. I'd like to replace that chainring with a 30T and put it on a bike running 11 speed. Do I need to purchase an 11 speed chainring or will a 12 speed chainring (slightly narrower, to my understanding) work with an 11 speed chain? I know that it won't work the other way due to the 12 speed chain being narrower, but am unsure why it wouldn't work to use the 12 speed chainring with an 11 speed chain?

It’ll work fine. I ran a SLx12 ring on my 11-speed system for over 1500 miles. Then I put the crank set with that ring on my new bike and it still works fine with 12s

I came across a couple half full containers of suspension oil at the beck of a shelf in the garage tonite. Could be 5, 8 years old, not sure. Does this stuff degrade over time when stored or can I still use it without concern? One is Fox the other is Marz.

I'd use it. It's not brake fluid.
