On your wood? Seems kind of keeperish. Congrats.
she’s a keeper alright
split the stuff that was too large for the stove, then ran all the stuff that was too long through her chopsaw
she almost filled the woodshed

Oak is going to take a while to dry out in there
it’s dry
thanks Dad
Our climate is not that of Maine or NE, it often doesn’t rain all summer. Inside that shed or not it will have many days of 80+ degrees and <20% humidity. I was shocked that split oak here could be close to completely dry after 1 summer. Although where I am it is hotter and drier.
Around here lots of folks don’t like oak because it takes two seasons stacked in the sun with a good breeze to dry. My experience emptying the woodshed of the back row was that even after six years the wood had not dried anymore than the day I put it in there. Glad it works for you Mike.
Not sure how the wood will dry this year. So far 9/10 days have been rain, fog or overcast.
it’s a little drier in California than Maine
no hard feelings cat - I’m just always amazed at how many people here have tried to advise me about seasoning wood - I’ve been cutting wood since I was a wee lad and I know how to deal with it on a long term basis
girlio had a full woodshed of seasoned oak, pine, and cedar last winter and we used a lot and still had 3 cords of oak left over - all I did was move the oak all to one side of the shed it was already in - the new pine and cedar is ready to go
her woodstove was fucked up when I started using it - I replaced the gaskets and she says it works better than it ever did before

I just finished a “Scandinavian” wood pile for the 2025-2026 winter. I’ll put it in the shed in summer 2025 once it’s seasoned.

that is great
Cool stack.
Do you tarp it in the winter?

Yep on the tarp. I should disclose that 30 seconds after I split the last couple of rounds in the photo and gently placed them on top, about 1/3 of the stack collapsed.[emoji23]Attachment 465060
" Bronco " doesnt sound very Scandahovian, just sayin
Since I've lost my stacker to research assistanceships, here's the current state of our woodpile, movin to shed.
Do you drape a tarp across the open front to make a wall/door to keep all that wood dry during winter?
I used to, not lately. The shed is surrounded by big conifers and the house, so it doesn't get wind there.
wood nannies are annoying
Having the sides open helps dry out the wood during the typically dry PNW summers.
But yeah, without the tall conifers and the house protecting it, I'd have to put up tarps or extend the overhang for the drizzly winters.
Not just New Mexico.

Might get my oldest to try that Scandinavian method for kicks.
Hopefully more to share soon. Building a wood shed and then stocking it with this new purchase. Attachment 465993

Thats ^^ a real saw, a local faller tells me its the 461/462 are the best saws he has used in like 35 years as a pro
Buddy has 3 of them (spares eh) and he gets them Walkerized
That what I heard from a buddy that does forest work in aspen. Power to weight is crazy apparently. It’s got a 28in bar on it.
I’ve got some large diameter trees to buck and a log splitter. Can’t wait to see what this think can do.

Can confirm that the 461/462 eats.

Spent the morning with the Royal Order of Red Suspenders group of volunteers. We filled a couple dump trailers to deliver to folks today and put up some more for future deliveries. We cut, split, and haul wood to elderly and needy folks. The group is organized through a local church. I don’t make many weekends, and I am am amazed by the few super dedicated folks that work every Saturday, nearly year around.
The loading splitter for big wood and the splitting table (forgot to get a picture) really helps speed things up.

This dying fir needs to fall to the side with no branches, and the branches are going to take out that alder and also probably hit that snag with unpredictable results.

Wood heat is a commitment for sure, but doubly so when you have to limb and fall your own big trees. Need to make friends with an arborist...
