UPS & FedEx have instituted a process whereby if you set yourself up (with your delivery address), the system scans shipments against this database, and you'll receive shipping notifications - even if the shipper didn't enter your e-mail address into the shipment.
UPS calls it "My Choice" and FedEx calls it "Delivery Manager". It's come in handy for me on a few occasions.
