yes, this sensation you describe is exactly what the various tail profiles mentioned up thread were in the pursuit of tuning out.

specifically, the Corvus has a 1.5cm tail height and the Sender has a 2.5cm tail height. I know lots of people love both of those skis, so no knock on them, but I was like you in moving back quite a bit to feel neutral on the rocker when I tested both of them.

What boots/forward lean are you in?

I’ll be skiing mine on the line with my Rossi Hero 130’s (12*). I’d go -1 if I was still using my dobermanns (15*) as the primary boot.

S/Max 130 Carbon. 25.5.

Not sure what the lean is but…. Some.

I’d say -8 sounds ideal. but if you are worried there isn’t enough tip, -8.5 should be good too.

if you are wanting to push further back than that, happy to chat in more detail, but then I’d start to think the R105 might be the better choice. I can totally see folks who liked rearward mounts on Corvus going for a -9.5 or -10 and being fired up with the R105.

not to throw a curveball at you, just talking it thru.

These would probably replace the Corvus and would live alongside the sender squad as an A/B DD for the firmer or tighter days. Love the Corvus for (1) that loose and slithery feeling that can slam into a carve when you push at the apex of a slarve, rubber ball sort of feeling, if that makes sense, and (2) laying them over into hard medium radii carves when it’s time to go on rough snow.

I was *this* close to buying another pair of 23/24 Corvus and FOMO’d the HL button instead.

The belly of the tip-rise was moved slightly forward and a little more kick was added to the tail. I have a good number of mx98 lovers on the 105. The consensus i’ve heard is: wildly better in soft snow, wildly better in variable snow, wildly better off piste, and very little to no downside on boilerplate

the rc95 is rad, but it does kinda sound like it is going in the wrong direction from what it sounds like you are after. I would say the RC95 (specifically the comp flex) is a straight up competitor to the MX98, just with a cleaner off edge feel. It does have a longer effective edge than the 105, and a slightly more neutral mount position vs the 105/mx98 too

What would you say should be a 70/30 low tide/more on piste replacement for a 184 MX98 (red tip) for 170# in shape over 60 dude?

Think Tahoe mixed condition and travel ski
187 RC95 seems a tad long;
186 RC105 a little wide and overlaps a bit with my 186 FR110, which is more like 35 piste/65 off piste.
183 RC85 may be a bit narrow for a travel ski.

great topic! Regarding the 184 MX98, I would say that and the Monster series skis might be some of the most substantial “184” skis made. Does the amount of “demanding” it possesses feel right for you?

the reason I ask is because the 187 rc95 is a more forward mount (-10 vs -12), had has some tail rocker, and a bit less camber, so it’s going to be quite maneuverable off piste compared to the MX98, while having comparable effective edge lengths.

She is one hell of a skier. 165 is her ideal ski length? I really want to offer such a thing.

Great nuance. Yeah, the MX98 on piste is perfect for mach schnell cruising. Bumps are OK, and tight spots are work. Will think on this…

If it is similar, do you know if it expands a lot during cure?

Besides putting it in the screw holes, what happens if I put some on the underside of the demo plate and topsheet? Expansion and bad? I’ve had one binding mount like that before where the “glue” was also on the underneath surface of the binding platform as well as the topsheet. Idk what glue/epoxy was used, but it added retention and was hard to remove bindings after screws out. Not so hard that it damaged anything, but I did have to chip a little off topsheet. Didn’t seem to expand much and didnt cause any major rise off the topsheet whatsoever. Asked same question in binding mount. thread

^^^ I have never used it on skis but IME using it on lots of other things, any 100% silicone does not expand at all.
