I think we're losing the alpine here, too, so yesterday my wife agreed to a spur of the moment over-commitment: just 9 miles and a couple thousand feet, but almost all hike-a-bike as it turns out, at least on the way up.
First couple miles were pretty ridable in a really stupid low gear, but then there's a waterfall crossing

@TAFKALS, the trail is a beast, but the rock offers some great lines. Mostly worth it. Mostly.

I hate to say it, but Trail 279 could be sanitized IMBA-style in a dozen or more places and I'd be fine with it. If it was only a dozen the trials moves would be about one every 2 minutes or so. We carefully laid tracks on all the giant, square-edged boulders to freak out the hikers, though, and the barely-ridable parts are awesome. Nice cruise home at the end was welcome as we lost light.

@jono - I hiked that last summer but haven't had the time to get back up there with wheels. Strong work, I think there is some merit to exploring that zone more.
Got in a great ride with my wife this last week and a great ride with the 9yo today. Looking like there's direct access to a flatter sloped rock section from the lake that might lead right to the gentler side of a ridge and back to the trail below the hike-a-bike. Very intriguing stuff.Quote:

Couple of photos from a ride in Ischgl earlier this summer. Ischgl is a pretty rare beast in Austria, in that some of the hiking trails are legal to ride (shared use), so you can ride more natural stuff than the shaped trails without worrying about bad vibes (the few hikers we came across were all pretty happy and interested to see bikers). Lots of fun, so props to Ischgl for the sense.e approach to MTB!
There are lifts and some bike-only trails too, but we started with a ~1100m grind up a firstly asphalt then gravel road up to Alp Trida. Nice views there too!

Once you get to the top of the Paznauner Thaya chairlift you can either join the forest road again, or take a significantly steeper and rougher natural (legal!) hiking trail. Camera doesn't do it much justice, and for experienced riders it's probably pretty straightforward, but was a good challenge for me. Tight, steep, twisty, rocky, and a few corners that were pretty tough - for me anyway - to make (you can't really see it but in the second photo each wheel is going off different ledges and the corner drops away quickly and steeper than it looks):

Cool to ride this area in summer, as in winter it's some of my favourite tree skiing too. Also got a few whoops from hikers, which was good for my noobie ego :lol:
Afterwards we went for a quick spin up the beautiful Fimbatal to get some more vert in the legs and earn more pizza :D

I had one of my most fun days on the bike ever in mid-September, in Fiss/Serfaus with my Aussie mate Tim (who is a MUCH better rider than me). Basically the riding is split into two parts: the bike park, and the rest of the mountain. You can either buy a park lift pass, or the more expensive all-mountain pass.
We started off in the Fiss bike park, which is one of the most popular in Tirol among the sendy crowd but is only a tiny part of the bike offering in the area. Most of the runs are fairly short, around the ~300m vert mark, but lots going on in them. Generally either fast flowing jump lines, which tbh are not really my thing as I don't know how to jump properly haha, but lots of big but well-shaped jumps as well as funkier features like hut-roof-drops (waaay beyond my level); or chunky natural stuff (trails named Supernatural etc) which I really enjoyed but surprised me a few fair times, with one or two rowdy corners I had to walk.
After sessioning the park, we went to check out what turned out to be some genuinely glorious natural single track + lightly shaped trails - and as a bonus we had the place to ourselves with NO-ONE else on the trails.
First up the Schönjochbahn lift to Fisserjoch at 2436m, from where you traverse the looovely 7115 (red, natural single track) trail over towards the Serfaus side.

But Tim and I took the Lazidbahn lift further up to 2351m, before taking the red 7082 trail then Hög blue trail all the way down to Serfaus at 1400m (which then whisks you back up into the bikepark).
The trails again were just beautiful, of that 'lightly-shaped but kinda natural' variety, especially the upper sections flowing through autumnal alpine views.

Overall the Fiss bikepark wasn't 100% my thing (bit too rowdy and busy, and too much time on the lift with the short runs) but the rest of the trails compare pretty favourably with Sölden and Saalbach and are definitely worth checking out if you find yourself in Tirol with a bike!
