Tahoe '24/'25 - This Thread Shall Not Be Privatized!!

Sad to hear about Syd's. Talked to new owner last night at the concert and they said they hope to be open by the 8th.
Boat people were bay area folks that owned a place in Tahoma, according to one of my clients who knew them. V sad birthday. Love that it can snow any day of the year here, but that means you can never fully let your guard down. Still prefer the mountains over the forests of the midwest: full of bitey things and poisonous plants with high humidity and temps. Felt downright hostile on a visit last week under the heat dome.

What are the odds 4th of July chutes are still ski able this weekend? Anyone been back there?

Seems like there's still a lot of snow sticking around based on what I saw in desolation last weekend.

There was a post of someone hitting it a week or two ago. Didnt look promising at the time for July4 but maybe?

Took the 4x road up to Barker pass (by far the most intense road me or that Yukon xl has ever been on) last Saturday. Was still skiable looking then.

The Pickles were regulars at the restaurant and I’d see them walking their dog in the hood

I skied in the hood this AM.
2 hours truck-snow-truck
2 runs on a wonky side-hill, but snow was smooth.
I have only been able to ski in my “backyard” a handful of times this late in the season.

I’d be down to hit 4th of July Chute, but that part of the Lake is gonna be crazy busy by the time I get off work…

Theyre putting the porta potties out at Donner Lake. Shits getting real.

Thanks. Will check them out. Been to Cronan a few times and really the only trail I enjoyed there was the intial green cruiser above the river. &nbsp;The rest of the trail network is kind of meh. &nbsp;Fire roads, non techy non flowy no features kind of XC riding.&nbsp;</p>

Connector/ Corral actully offers a nice down hill experience, with features, jumps, some tech. It is entetaining.&nbsp;</p>

This is my forth time bringing my kid to this camp. &nbsp;I usualy bike Forestdale Divide starting formt he confluence and come back down via Culvert and Confluence. About 3k and 30 miles.&nbsp;</p>

Day 2 I&#39;ve hit up Connector and Corral or twice have done a day on the river (too much sun for me really)</p>

On the final morning I&#39;ve either headed to Cronan Ranch OR a lap on Culvert. I think those Sly Park trails look perfect for Day 3, as it is really just a morning ride.</p>

The other two days i try to ride all day and get back to camp around 5PM. &nbsp;My kid is off the river around 6PM.</p>

Most of the on the map stuff at Sly Park is definitely on the XC side of things, but still a good time. The trail 8 side is more fun than the lap around the lake. The more interesting stuff is up the road a bit past the Fleming Meadows trailhead. Look for the gate on the left and do some exploring.

On a totally unrelated note--getting ready to hike up to Donner Peak, ran into 2 through hikers at the trailhead, looking confused at their phones. They started to head off south on Soda Springs Road. I asked if they needed help. They were trying to get to Soda Springs, not realizing that the town of Soda Springs and Soda Springs springs are two different places and that the latter is about as middle of nowhere as anywhere in the Sierra and a LONG way down the road. But they also said they were looking to take I 80 to get to Soda Springs. I pointed them to Donner Pass Rd and told them to go west a few miles. I was tempted to post in the Padded Room but it wouldn't have meant anything to people who don't know the area.

Has anyone hiked Ellis or skied 4th of July Chutes in the past week? Wondering if there's still snow up there.

I had a great idea for something similar to this 20 years ago, but hey look, these guys actually made it, tested it, and have a product for sale!
I made it as far as some basic design math, and looking at the size and weight of components. Mine would be so much better than theirs, but after 20 years and nothing to show, theirs wins.

I am gonna be the pedantic semantic and pint out that that’s not a ski lift, it’s a rope tow…

6 fire vehicles flew by my house at Donner Lake, then a helicopter circled the lake for an our. No smoke. Some kind of SAR i suppose. Anyone know?

Q for North Tahoe people: what's the trailhead access like in Carnelian Heights, to get to the TRT? Looking online and a. Google maps satellite images, it looks like there is access at the end of Fulton Crescent Dr, out onto a paved path (Dollar Creek multi use trail).

Can I drive out onto the forest service roads at the end of Fulton Crescent?

Mrs C wants to hike a section of the TRT from near Watson Lake, down to Tahoe City, and I'll bike it (we'll leave her a car at Tahoe City to drive herself home later). From Fulton Crescent, it looks like there's around 1.5-2 mi of connector trail that can be used to tie into the TRT.

Are you talking about the paved path? There are a couple of ways for where you are to get up to TRT. I’d say take the path to the XC center and then head up to lakeview trail. That will connect you both to the TRT and to Watson. But going to Watson would involve some backtracking to get back to the TRT unless you take the fiberboard from the far side of Watson to circle back to the trail. When will you be up there?

From Fulton Crescent I think you can drive onto 109 which will take you up to the fibreboard in a round about way

Sort of on the paved path - - but it doesn't look like the paved path runs in the direction we want (west mainly), at least not for very far.

On Trailforks, I found pretty good labels and maps - - it looks like from Fulton Crescent, I can go west on Shale Trail to Cedar Flat trail, then to Watson Traverse connector, which then joins the TRT. Anything inaccurate about that? Or is it gonna suck?

I think the the nicest route up would be to just go toward the XC center then connect to Lakeview trail to trt. It’s been ages since I’ve rode your route so there is probably a reason that I haven’t gone that way lol. YMMV

I'm not familiar with the access from the lake side you're asking about, but you can drive on the Fiberboard and drop her at Watson Lake or either the top or bottom of the Fire & Ice section of the TRT. You can park by the mini golf in CB and ride up Dirk's trails to hook into the TRT to Watson Lake or get up there from the Nordic Center. Extra credit available on Supernova and The Black Hole on the way down.

I’ll note that the climb up isn’t terrible while the fiberboard drop off is a bit of a slog by car imo

Update : rode the route I described above, today. I do not recommend going up shale trail, it's aptly named, steep, and end up walking a lot. Cedar flat trail was fine, nothing unique.

TRT in the section between Watson traverse connector and Tahoe City is mixed - IMHO a better hiking than biking trail. Good views, constant janky rock / scree on a lot of the trail - - it's very hard to get going any speed for any distance. If you like sawtooth trail, this is reminiscent.

Did you only do the connector from Watson to TRT? Where did you go after that? How did you drop from there into TC because there’s some good downhill there for sure. Where did you go once you connected to fiberboard? Are you on strava?

PS-I knew there was a reason I don’t ride shale trail ;)

Just seeing this now. Yeah the shale trail sucks and I’ve only ridden it once for a reason. But now you know! Haha.

We went up Shale Trail (don't do this), West on cedar flat, west on Watson Traverse connector, then down TRT to Tahoe City at the community center TH. There were some parts of the TRT after Watson Traverse that were fun, but a lot of pedaling that I'd describe as more work than fun.
