For what it's worth, we saw a noticeable increase in comfort and pain relief in our 14 yr old lab (he had osteosarcoma) when we gave him hemp-based CBD Immune Plus. We had been giving him Mary Jane's Creature Comfort, but couldn't really tell if it was working... but the CBD Immune Plus definitely made a difference right away.Quote:

SO...we've had two years of getting over our last Berner (who lived to be 10... no small feat for that breed). And, in two weeks, we're getting another Bernese. What are the latest 2018 thoughts on pet insurance. Good, bad, still a scam? The two big ones seems to be VPI and Trupanion around these parts. Any comments?
We spent gobs of money on our last three pets' healthcare. Know we'll do it again but the idea of insurance is kinda nice.
After going through two VERY expensive bouts with old labs and cancer treatments, we got Healthy Paws insurance for our 2-yr old chocolate lab. $47/mo for coverage against the big ticket items is worth it for us, considering what we’ve spent in the last few years (easily $12-13k or more).

For insurance, we went with trupanion (sp?). It was one of a few recommended by our vet. I also consulted with friends who have had recent experiences with a few companies and policies. It does not take much to accrue large debt from a single incident/issue.

This is tough, we want our furry friends to live as long as possible but they will hide their suffering so much to the point that they go downhill fast when it is time. Our approach on this type of thing is do what is best for the pet, not your emotions (ie months of treatment to maybe help the dog but inevitable is still there).Quote:

Had a big scare this evening, Daisy had a stroke. I could not get in touch with the Big Sky vet so I kept going to Bozeman and saw the 24 hour vet. She is doing ok now, but at 15 she is on borrowed time. Lots of mags have met Daisy, skifishbum is her adopted uncle. Got back home after midnight and she is resting comfortably. Driving through the canyon on the way to Bozeman I was crying like a baby, I was sure it was going to be a one way trip for her.

Only compounded by knowing how much you love driving the canyon at night - sorry you had to weather an episode Harry. I'm hoping it is just a bump in the road for D.
Definitely one of the kinder pooches I've been lucky to share a moment with. Very respectful of my personal space and of course, totally open to sharing hers.

Thanks gepeto, you are one of her adopted uncles too. She seems normal this morning. Vet thinks a brain tumor is a real possibility. MRI would tell for certain, but I see no point. I am just going to keep loving on her until until it is her time. It seemed like last night was her time, but turned out not to be. Last night was an emotional roller coaster for me.
I'm glad Daisy is OK, Harry and condolences Bro on your pup. Props to each of you for your love and commitment.

Sitting on the deck, drinking whiskey with a tear in my eye. Daisy looks a lot like my past pup Annie. I sometimes catch myself calling the new pup, Annie (3yrs with us).

Update on Daisy: she is now one week downstream from her stroke. Seems to be recovering well, for an elderly dog. I doubt she will ever recover 100 percent, but I am happy with where she is at (probably 75-80 percent). Still walks slower than before, but much improved in the past few days. Vision seems better, at first she was walking straight into walls and doors. Stamina was non-existent the first several days, she could barely walk 50 feet. But now she is up to about a quarter mile before she gets tired. Pre-stroke she was walking 5-6 miles per day...

Sorry to hear harry. We spread my wives goldens ashes into west fork(madison) not too long ago. We'll have to grab a beer sometime this summer, grabbed my bike pass so I'll be up in your neck of the woods fairly often.

Got this pup from a shelter 3 weeks ago. He was a bit lethargic and had runny poops. He also had apparently lost three lbs from 3 weeks before when he was neutered. Vet said maybe worms, although he had been dewormed. Then a fecal sample said he’d been exposed to giardia but didn’t have an active case. Vet put him on an antibiotic and he was still lethargic and still had gas and runny poops but those are known side effects of the antibiotic. His last day on the antibiotic was Saturday am. He had gained 4lbs in 10 days, his energy came back, he was looking much better and had a big day of playing on Sunday. Monday morning he acted exhausted, then he started coughing and sneezing and gasping when breathing, then his nose started bleeding mildly but consistently. Back to the vet and she said he had bronchitis and a nasal infection and he went on a different antibiotic, amoxicillin. Today he was even worse so back to the vet and she sent him to the animal hospital. Blood test came back and he has 0 platelets and low white blood cells. So low they stopped the antibiotic and admitted him. Just got more tests back and he has Ehrlichiosis, a tick born disease. At least we know now and it is treatable with likely good outcomes if it isn’t in his bone marrow according to the vet. They are trying to stabilize him overnight and get his platelets up, then they will give him a stronger Antibiotic. Hoping like hell he pulls through.
We’ve only had Rollie for three weeks but already so attached to him. Spent enough on vet bills already to buy a purebred GSD, but wasn’t walking away from him. Hopefully he will have many posts in the Doggie Stoke thread, instead of this one.
We keep second guessing how it took this long to get to this prognosis, but it sounds like it is pretty rare.
He is such a good natured dog. I’ve been looking forward to many years with him. He has been so easy to train, he hadn’t been house trained at all but learned almost immediately. Only accidents were when he had diarrhea. He follows us around everywhere, has almost perfect recall, and is just such a sweet pup. He likes nothing more than to snuggle up to us. Hopefully he gets better soon.

I keep wondering if that little bald spot on his leg was the scab where the tick bite was. That photo was taken on the day after we brought him home. We have never found a tick on him and I can’t imagine we would have missed one. He got a lot of petting and rubs.
