He's as communist as much as Xi is a communist. C'mon, man.
That’s my point.
Regarding the Fin-Soviet border, good friend of mine worked in Finland in the 90’s. spent quite a bit of time along the Soviet border. All the roads that connect across the line had pipes on the side going into the road subgrade. All bush workers has their explosives ticket, and a box of dynamite in the back of the truck was regulation. If the call ever came over the radio, the fuses were lit and very km or so the Finnish resource roads would get blown up.
Not sure if thar is still the plan, but my friend said at the time the Finn’s remember and have no desire for 1000’s of hungry Ruskies storming across the border. No love lost there.
I'm not really that worried this will happen, but, hypothetical situation here.
Does the US have any type of nuclear weapon deterrent system? If Russia decided to point all their nukes at the US and fire, would they pretty much all hit their targets? Or do we have the technology to blow them up in the sky on their way like the Israeli Iron Dome?
Also, have we thought about the astronauts on the ISS? Are the Russians and Americans/Germans up there just going about their business as usual? Putin just straight threatened to let that thing fall out of the sky onto the US or Europe.
The Snake Island solders are in the history books now. 'Russian warship, go fuck yourself." billboards appearing in Dnipro.
If I was a better student of history I would have known UA has been honing their shit-talking prowess for centuries.

Late stage capitalism apparently has come to the communist government world too. In the 70s they got a Dacha and a bigger ration of bread. Nowadays they get a sprawling complex in Sochi or some other spot.
Putin is KGB to the fucking core.
If he was focused on being an oligarch or getting more money, he wouldn’t have taken this military action.
Saw a protest sign pic today - “if Russia stops fighting there is no war, if Ukraine stops fighting there is no Ukraine”

People on the US buying vodka and dumping it out. Seems like that's supporting the vodka industry rather than hurting it... furthermore, most vodka in the US isn't from Russia

this is the point of nato’s anti-icbm installations. the things russia complains about are these defensive installations that get better and closer every generation and the fact that troops can be installed there. it is not clear how effective they are since they’ve thankfully never been tested in war or what the fuck would happen if a nuke was clobbered out of the sky over europe. or a thousand of them.
maybe summit has more info about the various layers deployed. idk. but yeah there are surface
to air anti missile defenses in place if that helps you sleep.
I've seen this kind of thing referenced In a few places. This post is the closest I found to original sources that I'd trust for it. Browder is the one who pushed for the Magnitsky act and had a history in Russia before falling out. Kuleba, quoted, is the Ukrainian minister of foreign affairs. https://mobile.twitter.com/billbrowd...68972652302342

I referenced the Russian apartment bombings earlier, those provided a lot of support for Putin and the government to brutalize Chechnya the second time. There seems to be a fair amount of evidence of wasn't done by Chechens, but very little investigation happened from what I remember.

My understanding is that there are not currently systems capable of intercepting MRV ICBMs, which Russia has in their possession.

The campus I work on has a photo series in one of the galleries about Arctic warfare. Particularly timely on the curator's part.
One of the pieces is a large installation in Canada that is part of a missile defense for North America. I will try to remember to take pictures tomorrow.
when the ICBM are incoming, there will be no interceptions. the retaliation will start before interceptions would be possible...
Doomsday.
so those installations only protect against short and medium range? well, there goes the neighborhood.
anyway seeing belarus is getting involved per ukrainian intel, they are expecting paratroopers from the north. fucking autocrats man.

They must have pretty good control of an airport around Kiev.

Nuclear war is a zero sum game. Putin would literally have to be insane as 99% of the world's population would die if both countries unleased their respective arsenals. This would almost certainly be the case, should even one ICBM be launched. I don't see this happening, no matter the hysteria.
Grey area would be a tactical nuke. I can't imagine Europe or the US staying out of the conflict in that event. I'd expect Russian military bases around the region to be leveled and their airforce neutralized, for starters. Then what?
What are you even talking about?
The Russians finished their successful joint invasion of Poland and a month later got into invading Finland ultimately sending 600K men, 5K tanks and armored vehicles, and 4K aircraft. Not really "ignoring" or half measures in numbers, but the Russian military had no competent leaders thanks to Stalin's purges, and they invaded with unwilling conscripts who died in huge numbers thanks to shit leadership, shit equipment, and highly motivated and capable Finns.
Putin has to declare a bank holiday

Largest weapon tested in atmosphere by Russia was 50,000kt though they tested several in the 20,000kt range. Largest US atmospheric test was 15,000kt.
Most Russian ICBM warheads are in the 500kt to 800kt range. Most US ICBM warheads are 300kt to 475kt (more accurate so they can be smaller).
Hiroshima and Nagasaki were 12kt to 20kt depending on calculation.
Tactical nuclear weapons may be a few tens of kt to <1kt.
Buncha retired operators from the US (and the UK) in UA now. Watchout for the motherfucker who goes to war barefooted. Give em hell boys!

I think he would hit a non nuclear country first. Like Poland. The question is what do we then?
Something someone pointed out to me tonight is that there is a big difference between sending him manpads and anti tank rockets before the shooting started vs. sending them after. I’m glad we are, but it does raise the stakes a bit.

Yea I've seen a few videos of captured russian soldiers and they just do not look like their hearts were ever in this at all. One showed a guy captured by a handful of civilians they had him in a car driving and they joked with him to say slava ukraine and they were so good natured about it you could see him have to repress a smile like he honestly almost wanted to.
So weird to see things like a tractor towing an out of gas BMP through the streets unescorted and seemingly unarmed. I know cell phones are showing more than other wards but I gotta think that wasn't happening in iraq or other places. crazy.

Is china either? These countries are authoritarian, communism is just the means to that, and becoming just window dressing.
My little prediction for the future/rant, a lot of the differences in government and society are gettign boiled down to do weither or not the individual is valuable, has autonomy and sanctity, or is a resource. Communist nations that embrace capitalism for its power, and supposedly democratic but in fact dictatorship with a hardon for monarchy and communism type countries or whatever russia is, are actually just authoritarian. Thats it. They exist on the principle that the individual doesn't matter.
The west has been undermined by corporations that erode the rights and autonomy of the individual, and are owned and/or controlled by the worlds wealthiest people that also do bussiness with china, and formerly with russia, and with chinese companies that in fact are state owned or state controlled by the authoritarian state that wants to undermine freedom.
Oligarch sure. He uses communist and czarist nostalgia interchangably to influence his people. Its all just irrelivant, if you're the strongman in charge you get to call it whatever you want to call it. I think the people of the world, russia included, are getting wise and are sick of it.
Not even close. The death toll would be horrific, but nuclear winter is not a thing with current arsenals and actually very few cities would be targeted. This is gonna sound weird, and I'm happy to go into the detail to explain it, but there aren't enough warheads to hit all except maybe the largest cities and there isn't enough yield in the arsenals for nuclear winter (a massive total exchange between US and Russia would be <500MT versus the height of the 60s Cold War when it could have been up to 20,000MT.
If you want to understand the technical aspects, Gladstone is the primer. A knowledge of general Russian and US nuclear doctrine and tech over time combined with rough active stockpiles is key to projecting the gross effects of a massive exchange.
A massive exchange would be horrific, end countless lives, generate untold suffering, and the involved governments would fall. May it never happen. However, it wouldn't kill most people nor end civilization.
What would make us charge in at that point and not before? Moral certitude and a death wish? Only a fool voluntarily joins nuclear conflict. Only the heir to throne of the kingdom of idiots voluntarily joins a nuclear conflict conventionally!Quote:
