went to alagna yesterday.... nice day, lot of snow for monterosa standard this year but already crusty in most of spots. I'll try to post a bit of pics here or in coreshot ASAP
G3000 yesterday with TeleAl and LITT: somewhat disappointed. the avy debris in the combe was amazing. i have never seen it in such bad shape. our usual left routes were completely unrideable (tho i tried) and completely blocked. the snow was ok at the top, but after about 3 turns (my turns) it turned heavy or crusty. the only good run was our under-the-chair run to reusch, which was nice and soft down to the treeline.
litt inspecting the crust

jeez jay, the combe got rocked, huh? good to see you guys still got a bit tho :)
Anyone got any (first-hand) info on conditions and forecasts in Arrabba and Cortina d'Ampezzo, or anything nearby?
Heading that way on Friday, wondering where to spend the first day or two.
here's the report!Quote:

Wow just returned from a week at Verbier. Deep powder every day. Phrases such as "best week of the year" filled the air. Stayed in a friends new chalet halfway up the Savoleyres Gondola. He built it after securing the merchandising rights to these guys www.alinghi.com before they won anything. Stairway, Highway, Backside, Attelas Chutes, Vallon d'Arbi, etc seemed to be recoated with powder every day. Not much in the way of pics or videos as these snow starved people had no intention of slowing down for a camera......

^^ ???
yes ?
and btw. it looks really really bad for the euro mini.... :(
the cold front on sat/sun doesn't reach the alps and warm SW airflow will verlikely break through by next tue/wednesday.....
im still hoping the cold air gets some steroids to rush further south. the low must intensify over scandinavia and move southward while the greenland high spreads furtehr south too. otherwise we're fucked.
Plenty of coverage. No worries.
this prediction look ok for next week

this does not ...

I'm not overly fussed ... it'll be great to get some turns in powder but i'm not going to throw the toys out of the pram if i can't. I'm up for meeting the rest of the euromaggots and getting some time to check out switzerland as i've never skied there before.
but wildstyle! remember your motto :D
im too broke to ski in spring conditions(coverage will be very good though)......
im still lamenting and whining that i did not go to engelberg from last sunday to wednesday(yesterday). pitty me ! now!
I've gifted my quota of pow to Brownmonkey who's lapping it up in Tahoe at the moment. He'll want to ski a bit of fast hardpack and wind affect next week in France. Just wait and see.
give us part 2 godammit ! :D
Sunday I think. No time now, then offline for the weekend. It's coming. As well as parts 3 and 4 ;)
precip is the word for the mini.
snow levels will be an issue though.
at 2000m you'd be on the safe side.(as of today)
it could be warm/wet, mild/wet, or cooler/wet (not cold)
soooo engelberg won't lose any snow above 1800 i'd guess and above 2400 lighter pow could be falling.
im hoping for a better development, but it doesn't look super bad right now either.
well, consider any forecasted snow as officially jinxed.....
....mounted up the sanouks this past weekend :FIREdevil
right now it looks like you're jinxing the snow levels AND the precip somehow. because with a westerly flow engelberg doesn't get much(nothing but cloudy weather). and it gets warm.
congratulations! :cussing:
that's ok, i'm going to cham :D
Agghh gawd lets hope it cools down a bit. It is soooo hot today with the zero iso around 2500 m at the mo you need water skis rather than snow skis. We are having to ski at night to keep cool: Grenoble Night SkiingQuote:

So, for the n-th time; I am going (most likely) to the berner oberland this upcoming weekend, for a 5 day touring trip, after which I'll be going to E-berg for the euro minisummit. However, the long range forecast seems a little sketchy right now; snow on saturday, better fro sunday and monday, and then bad wheather thereafter. As we know things can change rapidly especially for long range forecasts. But I was thinking about having backup plans. So I guess the question is;
What is the best resort for bad wheather skiing reasonably close to the berner oberland? Grindelwald, lötschental?? Others...
I only report snow, on the SNOW for the Euros thread.
Not being in Leysin at the moment, I cannot tell you.
However, I did see snow yesterday at about 1400m.
Think Snow.
That is such a good idea - always great to have a cable car and a 4500 meter mountain outside the back door.Quote:

Chamonix 3/22/06, 12:28 in the afternoon: Just woke up to see your trip report, Idris. Sorry to hear your first Midi lift wasn't incredible on the other hand given we didn't get back from Les Chaucas until around 3 and my head STILL hurts, not sorry to have ignored your SMS this morning...
this pretty much settles it for me .... I'm wearing beacons whenever i go skiing now ....

nice to see david from pistehors is getting quoted on the BBC website as well...... the BBc now know where to go to get alpine quotes.
Seems to be that all the people are dying in the french alps. Maybe its because the french arent that bright?Quote:

Great conditions on the Haute Route. A couple I met in Pakistan just emailed me this:
Chamonix-Zermatt 15-21 Mars
Chamonix- Zermatt ce n'est pas toujours l'autoroute...
Un temps sur mesure, pas une trace pendant 4 jours..., des refuges vides, des chamois et autres lièvres pour seuls compagnons!
